UPDATE: And that was that. Development on Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale has been canceled. The large-scale multiplayer shooter will now be transitioning to a free-to-play title and developer Define Human Studios will cease development.

The development team has promised there will be one final update to make Islands of Nyne free-to-play, while they're also looking into potential sever hosting solutions so that IoN will still be playable in perpetuity for those who've paid out for the game.

"I’d be lying if I said it hasn’t been a challenging couple of weeks for myself and the rest of the team here at Define Human Studios," wrote the Define Human team. "After much deliberation and with heavy hearts, we have decided to wind down the studio and end live development and updates on Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale.

"Unfortunately, all adventures come to an end, and for us, that time has come a little earlier than we would’ve liked. The reality now is we are no longer able to financially support development costs despite our efforts to turn things around with our latest update and pricedrop. However, If there was a silver lining to be had here it would be that as of 12pm PST today Islands of Nyne will become f2p and servers will continue to stay up for the foreseeable future. In addition, for those of you who purchased Islands of Nyne or any skins from the in-game item store from November 29th, 2018 through today, we have notified Valve to approve any refund requests for those purchases regardless of time spent in game."

It's a sad turn of events, in truth. Islands of Nyne began life quite fruitfully with peak concurrent players of 7,272, but keeping a 100-player battle royale alive with an active player base is a very tricky concept. In order to keep matchmaking times down to a minimum, you need thousands and thousands of players online at all times. No one wants to drop early, die, and wait 15 minutes for a match-up. We'll see how it goes once it goes F2P although the dev team seems all too aware it's probably too little, too late.

Original Story: 20-Jun-2018 - Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale Gameplay Trailer Shows off Deadly Maps Built by Alien Races

If you tuned into Microsoft’s Xbox E3 2018 briefing, you may have spied a curious little game called Islands of Nyne, an Unreal Engine 4-powered Battle Royale shooter from Define Human Studios.

After last week’s brief tease onstage, the development team has revealed a new gameplay trailer for Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale. I keep wanting to call it Knights of the Nine, it’s a semantic nightmare.

As far as battle royale games go, Islands of Nyne is looking like a fairly slick affair. 100 players will be dropped into alien-built arenas and be forced to battle to the death. You know the formula by now - scavenge for weapons and gear, defeat your opponents, and try to stay within an encroaching plasma field.

Unlike the two primary competitors though (PUBG & Fortnite), Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale seems to be leaning more heavily into the source material; the Battle Royales and Hunger Games of his world. There’s not really any attempt at cohesion to the maps, these are alien-made death structures littered with death traps, colosseums, and military bases. “Built by a technologically superior alien race, each arena is engineered to provide a unique and obstacle-ridden battlefield for players, designed to reward strategic thinking and tactical decision making,” explains Define Human Studios.

Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale is coming to Steam Early Access on July 12th, with an Xbox release due at a later date.

They should not just make it F2P but community modable, so they can continue making something out of it, with new modes and weapons.

Yet another game that seems to have good gameplay and will be a battle royale, what a waste for people like me that are not a fan of the game mode.

Yeah, pissed off I spent my money on this pile of steaming sh^it. The devs only care about money and built the game fundamentally broken.

I have this, friend of mine put into the kickstarter and got 4 keys. I have uninstalled it as the game was completely unplayable, and btw this has been out and about before pubg and fortnite. The game was quite fun but it needs quite a lot of work.

This looks so simplistic, I have almost no good words for it. Recoil patterns aren't random, completely the same, shot after shot. The environment does look cool, very saturated but detailed, but the gameplay looks of this trailer belong in 2010

Seeing as Bluehole hasn't won any of their stupid lawsuits yet I doubt these guys need very good lawyers at all. I don't even think Islands of Nyne has a frying pan weapon.
