Madmind Studio, of Agony fame/controversy, has announced its decision to cancel the development of Agony Unrated, the planned uncensored version of its sex and violence-fuelled trip into the depths of hell.

The uncut scenes were revealed in a now-defunct YouTube clip that showed footage of killing children, penetration rape, and a spot of tentacle sex for good measure. Sadly, for the edgy folks looking forward to this, the Unrated version of Agony is no more.

“We regret to inform you that our company is currently struggling with financial problems”, wrote the developer on Agony’s Steam page. “Due to technical and legal reasons, Madmind must cancel the development of Agony Unrated. Part of the team will continue to support Agony on Steam and consoles by publishing new patches.”

It would appear that for whatever reason (*cough* terrible reviews), Agony hasn’t quite lived up to the expectations that Madmind had for it. It’s difficult to gauge digital sales of course, particularly since Steam Spy ground to a halt, but Agony has 1350 Steam reviews with an overall ‘Mixed’ rating. 1350 reviews really isn’t a bad tally so we expect Agony sold a fair few copies, although clearly, it wasn’t quite enough, despite the Kickstarter success.

I suspect the negative reviews didn’t help, including a frankly miserable Metacritic score of 35 on Xbox One. It’s a familiar refrain for these shock tactics titles, winning fans over with the gruesome content and then forgetting to deliver a solid game on top of it.

Anyway, if you bought Agony then you can still expect a few more patches to tidy up the rough edges. The Xbox One patch that fixes a bug on the One X console is due to arrive today, while a further patch for PC, PS4 and Xbox One is due later in the week. This will tackle ‘many fixes’ as well as improving Agony’s lighting system.

When I first saw the trailers I was a bit skeptical . It seemed to me all it was trying to show "controversy". If the main selling point of the game is only violance and disgust then the game will not be very well received.

But a game that only depends on gore and violence as it's main selling point it's going to fall short. From the reviews I read about they said the game's plot was shallow, it was plagued by clunky mechanics and some bad puzzles. Usually a bad game will sell badly.

That's why I said usually :p
There's exceptions. Because of the critical acclaim of Oblivion, Skyrim was highly anticipated. That's one of the reasons it sold so well. The other obvious reason (over the years) is the modding community.
And I wouldn't really call it a bad game, it was average.

My point was: Agony is a basically a walking simulator. A game like that will lack in gameplay mechanics so it's got to compensate in other areas. If those other areas are going to be bad then you basically have a bad game. In Skyrim's case it was different. Open world, different ways to play it, decent graphics.

And one other strong point in Skyrim that I don't see much people talking about it is the easiness to play it. There was nothing overly complicated about it. You don't need to learn nor read anything to be able to play it. It was pretty straightforward in the beggining and that captivates the player.
