Up For Debate - What are your Favourite Mobile Games in 2018?

Written by Jon Sutton on Sun, Jul 22, 2018 5:00 PM

Mobile gaming can occasionally get some bad flack, but the truth of the matter is that it’s something that pretty much all of us have access to at all times. Whether it’s a quick session on the bus or just while you’re watching something on TV, mobile gaming is a great way to fill in the gaps and pass the time.

Anyone who’s braved the iOS or Google Play app stores will know it’s the wild west out there though. While there’s plenty of quality, it’s all usually buried beneath mountains of Clash of Clans and Candy Crush clones. It means that a lot of the time we’re relying on word of mouth to discover the best games on the mobile stores, but what better place to find them than on a gaming site like this, where pretty much all of us are playing mobile games at some point or other?

I’m basically a sucker for word games, and puzzle games in general, and certainly prefer my mobile games to be less action-based so they don’t need my entire focus. Aside from the usual suspects I’ve been really digging into Word Link. It’s a great little puzzle game that blends in lots of unique mini-games aimed at boosting vocabulary. They update it each day with new challenges and it’s basically stress-free puzzle solving that can be great whenever I’ve got a spare 10 minutes.

The other one that I recently picked up is Homo Machina. Considering it’s about an hour long it’s a bit pricey for a mobile game at £2.99, but I think the artwork is probably worth the admission alone. It’s based on the work of Fritz Kahn and it envisions the human body as a giant factory filled with levels, belts and systems that keep it going. They’re all sort of analogous to how the organs work in real life, featuring some fairly rudimentary puzzles to showcase how breathing works, for example. It’s certainly not for everyone but puzzle fans should get a kick out of this short but sweet experience.

While these games are mobile-centric, Felix is always interested in how classic PC games can be run on mobile phones. After all, who wouldn’t want to play Rollercoaster Tycoon sat by a swimming pool? Lately, he’s been plugging away at Battle for Wesnoth, an open source turn-based strategy game that originally came out on PC in 2003. There’s a version of it on Steam but it’s also available as a totally free download on Android, complete with dozens of full-length campaigns, multiplayer, and the ability to download new campaigns and mods from the official servers. It remains absolutely true to the original, right down to the interface which emulates mouse movement. Thankfully it’s all turn-based so there isn’t pressure to do anything quickly, making it a great (and free) fit for mobile.

So what mobile games are you currently enjoying in 2018? Do you tend to go for the free-to-play titles or do you seek out the advert and microtransaction-free premium titles? Let us know what you’re playing below!

Our favourite comments:

I play more than enough on PC, so I don't need any mobile games. Is there anyone here ex. myself, that doesn't play on smartphones at all? :)

Every time I attempt to play a mobile game it's at home, by which point I question my existence.

Ever since Heaven Strike RIvals shut down, I've had a huge hole in my heart for phone games. I really enjoyed that game but cannot find anything else that is similar to it. Sad Face.

The Battle of Polytopia, a Civilization-like mobile game with random-generated maps. It's free and has no ads, you get 4 tribes and can purchase more. The replayability is great even with no purchases.

I can't honestly believe people think there are zero good games on mobile lol. They're there, they've just got to be found

That's the problem. Finding a good game in between thousands upon thousands of bad ones is pretty hard to do.

Mobile games? Play store has trashy games, but Microsoft mobile store has even more trashy ones. I use 70$ Lumia for last 3 years and with its lack of apps I am rather pleased as it is less distracting, since i am a student. I have seen lots of classmates wasting time on those grinding games and get frustuated.

I tried several games like Galaxy of Heroes, Fire Emblem etc but I couldn't get myself to play those games longer than a month or so. They get boring very quick. They want you to spend money for mtx and pc and console games are much better.

Sonic Forces, Fallout Shelter, PUBG Mobile, Shadow Fight 3 (haven't played enough to see if it's P2W), Touchgrind Skate 2/True Skate, Duel Links/Hearthstone, ShadowGun: Deadzone, DB Legends (people love it but I feel like it's P2W or at least grind2win). I used to play on my phone when I was in high school.

Rollercoaster Tycoon classic is a great game (Not the freemium games those are horrible!!) which brings the full RCT 1&2 experience to mobile. I also like the rockstar games like GTA: San andreas (altough they are very poorly optimised) Playing games on different emulators like Drastic for DS games and dolphin for gamecube and Wii games is also very fun. (dolphin is still a bit unstable though)

Dead effect 2, PinOut, Cosmic Challenge, Reporter 1&2, Old school RuneScape, Minecraft, Kingdom Rush Series, Transport Tycoon, Riptide GP series, Evoland and soon Grid autosport (yes the full pc game already out on ios still waiting on android) are all great games that are worth playing and are not your standard boring mobile games of which there are many copies. Mobile gaming is not all bad.

I kinda despise mobile games. Their reliance on constant meaningless grinding, overuse of microtransactions of which they remind you ever minute or 2, and sheer amount of trash there is to find on the online store make me barely ever open the damned app.
If there are any games I do play on my mobile it's either chess or sudoku, because they're good and it's pretty hard to monetize them.

You are very correct. But that accounts for most and not all games. There are several excellent games on mobile that do not require micro transaction nor are they freemiums, like Roller Coaster Tycoon, NBA JAM, Dead Space, pretty all of Kairosoft's portfolio, emulator games like Pokemon or final fantasy.

But these account for id say less than 1% of the Play/App Store

I agree, but they're extremely hard to find and I just don't have any patience to look for them, I also don't use my phone for much so it's not a huge deal for me. For any good game on mobile there are literally thousands of trash ones so you're basically searching for a needle in a haystack.

its not like looking for a needle in a haystack
its more like looking for an unbroken needle in a stack of broken needles

Kairosoft easily the best game studio on mobile. Their games Game Dev Story was absolutely brilliant

There is also Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 on mobile

And you should try Godville as well, its a....unique game

But you have to try KAIROSOFT games. Support that company because their games are worth spending money on

I play harry potter hogwarts mystery atm a lot. I know you gotta plan because of energy etc, but still i find it quite addictive.
Same goes for choices: stories you play, and a couple of others, but these 2 i find myself booting up the most
