Sony’s hit quite the milestone this week, announcing that total sales of PlayStation consoles have ticked past 500 million units. That’s half a billion consoles sat in gamers’ homes around the world. This figure includes the PlayStation through to the PlayStation 4 Pro, as well as the PSP and the PlayStation Vita.

"Today, I'm thrilled to reveal that Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially sold more than 525.3 Million PlayStation systems worldwide!” said Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Eric Lempel.

“With 500 Million PlayStation systems sold, that means countless adventures into the unknown, courageous stands against evil, and life-long memories of playing with family and friends. Thank you to all our fans for your passionate support over the past 24 years, which made all of this possible."

This figure was achieved over the course of just under 24 years, equating to around 21.9m consoles every year, or 60,000 each and every day. If you want to get even more granular, that’s 42 PlayStation consoles sold every minute of every day for the past 24 years.

It’s a formidable achievement and to celebrate the milestone, Sony has announced the 500 Million Limited Edition PS4 Pro. This special edition includes a 2TB hard drive and a blue transparent case that’s incredibly 1990’s. It’ll go on sale on August 24th priced at $499, but expect these to go fast.
