The Surge may only be just over a year old but developer Deck 13 is already deep into development of The Surge 2, the upcoming sequel due out in 2019.

Unsurprising given the quick turnaround, The Surge 2 is following a familiar formula of hardcore Souls-like combat, albeit with a dynamic limb targeting system that allows players to focus damage of weak points. It’s refinement more than revolution, adding in directional parrying, advanced dodging, improve AI behaviours and additional abilities, weapons, implants and drones.

Probably the most immediate change to The Surge though is Deck 13 discovering what vegetation is. The original was a decent Souls impersonator, although its endless parade of factories and warehouses could grow wearying. More environmental variation looks to be the order of the day in The Surge 2, this time featuring a huge, interconnected city with sprawling level design.

For those after a sci-fi Souls fix, The Surge 2 is certainly ticking plenty of boxes. The Surge was a heck of an improvement over Lords of the Fallen, and certainly more innovative, so here’s hoping Deck 13 can continue to push their ambitions.

Looks so much better than the E3 footage.
