Valve is Now Back in a Great Position to 'Focus a Lot More on Games Again'

With Artifact beginning to creep over the horizon, Valve has said it’s aware all too of the meme-tastic jokes about the studio no longer making games, promising this will all change very soon. Now work is wrapping up on overhauling Steam as a service, more of Valve’s team is going to be free to work on new games.

If this sounds a bit like a broken record, that’ll be because this isn’t the first time we’ve heard Valve make such claims. We’ve already heard this here, and here, and here, here, and even here. There’s ultimately only one way to stop the questions though, and that’s for Valve to back up its barks with bites and release new games.

“I think we're very aware of all the jokes because all of us lurk all the forums and share them around with each other,” said Jeep Barnett, an Artifact programmer, during an interview with IGN.

According to Barnett, understanding Valve from the outside looking in is “very complicated”. Behind the scenes there are things going on, it’s just not especially visible to PC gamers.

“A bunch of investment we've done over the past few years hasn't really been exceptionally visible to customers playing our games,” Brandon Reinhart, another Artifact programmer continued. “We spent a lot of time improving customer service on Steam. That was a hard problem, and it took a bunch of people a bunch of time to work on.” On that front, we’ll have to take Valve’s word for it.

The good news is that Valve is now in a position where it can begin making games in earnest once more. The last full game that Valve put out was DOTA 2 all the way back in 2013, and plenty of Valve fans don’t seem overly enamoured at the prospect of the card-battling, DOTA-themed, Artifact.

“Now we're in a place where we're able to, as a company, invest and focus a lot more on games again,” Reinhart said. “The answer to ‘you're just sitting on your butts, sitting on a pile of money, swimming around the gold vault,’ is to not actually do that. To deliver a bunch of high-quality games that show we're actually working really hard.”

There's a heck of a lot of moving parts when it comes to a business like Valve, although the intention to get back into games, along with the acquisition of Campo Santo earlier this year, does begin to raise questions as to whether Valve's feathers are ruffled. An increasing number of publishers are choosing to use their own game clients, while competition in the storefront market is heating up thanks to the likes of Twitch and Discord. Steam is still the undisputed champion of PC gaming clients, but right now Valve needs exclusive experiences to compete with the other upcoming platforms.

Yet again then, promises from Valve that it’ll be getting back into games shortly. What do you think Valve has up its sleeve though, realistically? Could we see some sequels or spin-offs, or are you expecting an all-new IP?

OMG! That's great news! (sarcasm)
So when is Valve actually going to make a game? Let me be clear...make the game we all aren't allowed to name.

I see Valve doing a lot of talking but not really acting, sounds like a bunch of self boasting to me. I'll believe it the moment they produce a new big game.

don't count on it too much, the lead writers have fled, and they spend way too much time on VR

So does it mean that I would not have to wait enough to be as old as Geralt to play half Life 3?

So they needed to make 4.3 billion dollars(and more) yearly to be in a position to make games again? And knowing valve, they will make basic, wooden games that don't even cost a lot, due to having crappy gameplay, cheap graphics and almost no voice acting, cinematics or anything, thus being extremely cheap, so what is that 4.3 billion dollars for?... -_-

And knowing people, everybody will praise them to no end for releasing another wooden, outdated, boring game...

Hate on me all you want, Valve is scum... -_-

They made some of the most innovative (in terms of both technology , story , gameplay) and memorable games of the last decade. Just because they didn't make sequels doesn't make the other games bad.
Let's see what they actually come out with rather than pretend we are soothsayers.

I was around when half life 2 was about to come out, like 5 of my friends were super hyped, I was hyped because of that, the game came out and I thought it was dead on arrival and outdated very much so and now looking back, with decent programming, game design, lot's of understanding about games I can say that 5-6 year old me was spot on... -_-

I was there when CS 1.3 came out, my dad got my CS 1.4 then 1.5 and finally, 1.6 all of them were wooden and crappy and that has barely changed with CS:GO, but all my friends played CS... L4D(1 and 2) is one of the crappiest zombie games that I've played.

Their games were crap back then

And yes I wish they finally put their pants together and made some quality modern game that is not 5 years outdated on launch day, even though nowadays 5 years outdated isn't very outdated considering how stagnant games have been for the past decade, so this time it will either be 15 years outdated or be modern, let's wish for the latter...

But then I look that their entire staff with all the studios they own and all the other support, office and so on personnel/employee count is around 360 and that kinda makes me question how are they going to put out a decent game with so few people that spread across multiple divisions...

Portal 1 and 2 are the only good games that valve owns and they are good due to the puzzles, I really like those games, especially portal 1.

Valve is certainly not the best company out there by any stretch of the imagination, but in terms of games they made they were pretty much always good and pretty successful.
I think that if they're planning to start making games seriously again, they're not going to skimp on them.

Then they better start hiring a lot more people, or their games might take forever to make if they actually want to make them up to standard. XD

Their games usually exceed the standard so I'm pretty sure they can manage if they get into developing seriously again.

Half-Life series, L4D series, TF series, Portal series, DotA 2, CS series. Pretty much most of their games overall were pretty damn great.

Hehehehe, no XD
Portal sure, due to the puzzles which make for the entirety of the game, but none of their games has good gameplay for their time or even now, it's all wooden gameplay, clunky mechanics and people praise them for it...

I respectfully disagree there.
Have you thought that maybe people praise them because they like them? Because they maybe don't think the gameplay is either "wooden nor outdated" and that in-game mechanics are fine.
You have every right to not like them, but to claim that they're awful and that everyone who does like them is wrong is not a great stance to hold.

Obviously, they praise them, because they like them... well most of them... I know tons of people that praise video games based on videos and youtubers, without playing them and often after I make them play them they either lose intrest or dislike them and rarely actually like them...

Ok, but what about that?
Also that's a completely unrelated story and I don't understand what your point here was.
Are you trying to imply that people who are interested in certain games most probably wont like them or that they've been forced to like and praise games they've never either played nor had any intention to do so? Because I'm pretty sure both are incorrect.

I'm sure both are correct as I've seen this behaviour in friends and friends of friends, my brother and his friends...
They get hyped by trailers, then the game comes out some youtubers play it and they get hyped for it, they finally get or pirate it and they don't even get 1/5th through the game... -_-

If that's the way to judge the quality of games, then every single game you've played, I have played, and was ever made is a bad game because there will always be someone out there who just didn't like it for some reason or another.
I quite literally don't know of a single game that all of my friends and me unanimously like.

I'm not saying that all my friends disliked half-life or valve games, I'm saying that with different games they get hyped by trailers, videos and so on, they think it's the best and when they play it they end up not liking it.

And I'm saying valve games are bad mainly due to the gameplay, not the design of the gameplay, but the execution.

And I'm saying that you have every reasonable right to not like a certain game for whichever reason you want to, but you cannot claim that the game is bad as a fact and that people are unreasonably praising the game just because you don't like how it plays.
