Sony Announces PlayStation Classic Loaded With 20 Games, Includes Final Fantasy and Tekken

Written by Jon Sutton on Mon, Oct 29, 2018 3:22 PM

UPDATE: Sony has revealed the full list of PlayStation One games that will be included on its PlayStation Classic mini console. Joining the original line-up of Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, R4 Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3 and Wild Arms are some gems like Cool Boarders 2, the original GTA, Syphon Filter, Resident Evil, Persona, Twisted Metal, MGS and Rayman.

PlayStation Classic All 20 Games Included:

  • Battle Arena Toshinden
  • Cool Boarders 2
  • Destruction Derby
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Grand Theft Auto
  • Intelligent Qube
  • Jumping Flash!
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Mr. Driller
  • Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
  • Rayman
  • Resident Evil Director’s Cut
  • Revelations: Persona
  • Ridge Racer Type 4
  • Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
  • Syphon Filter
  • Tekken 3
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six
  • Twisted Metal
  • Wild Arms

Sony has touched a lot of bases here, despite some glaring omissions. When you're limited to just 20 games it's always going to be nearly impossible though, and it's sad to see Crash, Gran Turismo, Silent Hill, Tomb Raider, and Castlevania not make the cut. With such a limited number of games this was always going to happen, but there's a feeling that Battle Arena Toshinden, Jumping Flash and Intelligent Qube, among a few others, were perhaps waste spots. PS1 really isn't the ideal platform to experience the original Rainbow Six either.

What are your thoughts on the final games line-up for the PlayStation Classic?

Original Story - 19-Sep-2018 - Sony Announces PlayStation Classic Loaded With 20 Games, Includes Final Fantasy and Tekken

Sony has taken a leaf out of Nintendo’s book with the announcement of the nostalgia-inducing PlayStation Classic, a miniaturised version of Sony’s first games console that revolutionised gaming for the modern age. The original PlayStation arguably brought gaming out of the basement and into the front room with its line-up of titles like Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Syphon Filter, Tekken, Final Fantasy, Silent Hill, Resident Evil and more.

“Almost 25 years ago, the original PlayStation was introduced to the world. Developed by Sony Computer Entertainment, it was the first home console in video game history to ship 100 million units worldwide, offering consumers a chance to play games with real-time 3D rendered graphics in their homes for the first time,” said PlayStation senior VP, Eric Lempel.

The PlayStation Classic is almost half the size of the original PlayStation, although it retains the exact same look. The big change is the addition of an HDMI output round the back, allowing this classic console to be hooked up to modern TVs with ease.

The console itself will be available for $99.99 / €99.99 / £89.99 and includes two wired PlayStation controllers plus, and here’s the potential downside, a fairly small catalogue of 20 games pre-loaded onto the system. The only confirmed games right now are Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, R4 Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3 and Wild Arms. They’re all pretty beloved titles in their own way, but we’re itching to find out what the other 15 games are. The original PS1 was heavily reliant on third-party titles during its retail run, with a noticeable lack of first-party games from Sony. They’re going to have to ink some pretty big deals with third-parties to flesh the library out, including the likes of Konami and Capcom.

Amusingly, it was only just over a year ago that Sony’s own Jim Ryan said "I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?" It’s funny how things change.

Sony’s PlayStation Classic will be launching worldwide on December 3rd, 2018, and if you look around there are a few locations to pre-order right now.

Anyone planning to pick up one of these? Do you think these early 3D games hold up, or have they had their time? Let us know!

Meanwhile the Japanese version has one of the best games on it (Parasite Eve) while Sony totally ignore the one game EVERYONE asked for (Legend of Dragoon).

Sony has the biggest tools running their gaming branch, I mean how the hell did they forget Legend of Dragoon, the one exclusive IP they own themselves?!

Anything is better than this garbage currently on the western version, excluding Toshinden, Persona and Wild Arms that is. they also forgot Beyond the Beyond.

Agreed. You could play all of those titles on any hardware with emulation today.

My PS1 is practically nearly brand-new as my dad didn't play much on it and neither did I, because he got me a PS2 and everything is backwards compatible XD

I got 7 PS1 controllers, 3 of which were bought new without analog stick OG ones, 1 is broken, 4 were bought new second hand, because they were 2.5 euro each(the second hand ones), a gypsy had stolen them brand new and had no idea what they were for, so my dad took advantage and bought 4 for 2.5 euro(in current currency, no idea how it would be back then) each bach when they costed full price and these have analog sticks(dualshock 1). XD

I still have my childhood PSOne (The slim version), but it is busted :(
It took some lightning damage years ago and since everything on that console is a part of the motherboard, replacing it would mean to basically buy a new console. So I just kept it as a history piece.

Okay, it was cute when Nintendo did this but honestly we don't need Sony to make this. Just imagine if this trend keeps up and Microsoft releases the Xbox classic.

The big question with these is if they are emulating or the real thing. If they are emulating I wouldn't recommend them, if they are the real thing but smaller, that's a fair price.

PS1 games can also be played on a PSP which you can snag on evilbay nowdays for $20 or so...AND get access a whole library of amazing PSP games.
I mean...nothing can beat PSX emulation on RetroArch or the likes, especially with wobbly texture fixes and increased rendering resolution, but a PSP has its charm, especially the ability to snug up under a blanket in bed and play :)
Or one can upgrade to a PS Vita and enjoy PSV, PSP and PS1 games xD

You can also play PS1 games on PS Vita and PS3. Usually when you buy a PS1 game on the store, it will be playable on PS3, PSP and PS Vita.

I did mention the Vita. I specifically skipped the PS3 because it's not portable and the experience offers nothing over the awesome emulation on PC, making the PS3 a bit pointless for that :P

you guys realize you can get almost all PS1 and PS2 games to run on PC with much better graphics than the original versions ?
it's a novelty item at best, I prefer having a couple old PS1 since I want my kids to go through what I did.

you can just pick up any old PS1 and replace the laser diode or disc motor and slap that baby onto a CRT television and see those nostalgia tears drop :-')

That sounds like a lot more effort that getting an HDMI plug and play PS1 lol. As for emulation on PC, yeah, that's pretty obvious, but there's obviously an appeal for people playing on hardware that looks like a PS1. Just look at how the NES and SNES mini sold. Most people can't be bothered to mess around with roms and emulators, they just want a $100 nostalgia hit and then they're done

I am getting mixed feelings here, I mean it's cute and all but does it take discs or only preloaded games? that controller port doesn't look standard does it ?(I still have a couple of dualshock PS1 controllers and a disc bag(yes that bag).

This looks great

If I had to guess what the other games were I'd guess:
Crash 2 or 3
Spyro 2 or 3
MGS
SotN
Resident Evil 2
Silent Hill
PaRappa
Pro Skater 2
Abe's Oddysee
Tomb Raider 1, 2 or 3 (probably 2)
Klonoa
Driver
Gran Turismo 1/2
Street Fighter Alpha 1/2/3
Final Fantasy Tactics

Or something along these line, they aren't necessarily what I want most but what I think would make most people satisfied

I would've put Ape Escape there but it seems as if we aren't getting dualshock controllers so that'd be impossible

I reckon there's going to be no Crash (Activision won't allow it while the remaster trilogy is so new), Spyro, or MGS (Apparently a remake is in the works). Aside from that, the rest looks pretty solid.

Personally I'd like to see Crash Team Racing, Vagrant Story, Syphon Filter, FFIX as well, Tony Hawk, Twisted Metal, Wipeout, Ape Escape, Tenchu. There's too many games lol, can only be disappointed. Hopefully this thing is hacked to all hell and back though lol

Yeah you're right as well, no dualshock is a pretty weird omission. I get they're going for the nostalgia thing but from how I remember it the dualshocks were pretty much standard a couple of years into the PS1's lifespan

Ah yeah, you're probably right in terms of Crash and Spyro though I haven't heard anything on an MGS remake.
I haven't actually played CTR but that does seem perfect to but on this.
But yeah there are so many games on the PS1, I'm a massive JRPG fan and there's so many on the PS1 that I'll probably be disappointed if most of the library were JRPGs.

I am guessing it will be hacked pretty quickly since there does seem to be a micro USB port at the back.
