For years now, plenty of us have been chasing the 4K dream. Or, at the very least, merely dreaming of 4K gaming. 4K gaming is just about becoming a reality for a price that doesn’t require selling a kidney, which of course means enthusiasts are now looking towards 8K gaming.

Over on TweakTown, they’ve been fortunate enough to get their hands on two (two!) GeForce RTX 2080 Ti’s, benchmarking them at 8K using Nvidia’s new NVLink connection. NVLink is a replacement for the SLI Bridge, using an interconnect to provide higher bandwidth, more links, and improve scalability for multi-GPU configurations.

Just for some perspective, 8K resolution (7680 x 4320)  is four times the resolution of 4K (3840 x 2160), and 16 times the resolution of 1080p. Suffice to say, 8K resolution requires formidable graphics processing power, and a hefty amount of video memory.

Now, onto the important part, the 8K GeForce RTX 2080 Ti SLI benchmarks. We’re going to forget about 4K benchmarks and all that guff, and focus instead the 8K performance. Surprisingly, the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti SLI can actually deliver playable frame rates at 7680 x 4320 screen resolution across a variety of games.

Rise of the Tomb Raider, at 8K and Very High graphics preset, achieves an average FPS of 50 frames per second. This compares to 26fps with a single RTX 2080 Ti, showing very impressive scalability.

Meanwhile, Middle-Earth: Shadow of War has similar results, averaging 48fps but unfortunately dipping to a low of 21 frames per second. Rainbow Six Siege is almost identical, averaging 50fps and dipping to a low of 22fps. THat’s practically unplayable for an online shooter, but it’s so close.

Here are the rest of those benchmark results, and you can see the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti SLI is oh-so-nearly a very playable 8K configuration. If you’re happy to dip down to a locked 30fps it should be a breeze in some games. Now we just need to figure out where the heck we can buy an 8K display….

Game 8K Average FPS 8K Minimum FPS
Rise of the Tomb Raider 50 N/A
Shadow of War 48 21
Rainbow Six Siege 50 22
Far Cry 5 37 32
F1 2018 81 54
Shadow of the Tomb Raider 40 32
