Phew, it's been quite a ride this year. 2018 has been yet another stellar year in gaming, even if it arguably never quite hit the heights of 2017. There's been smash-hits, lots of angry people, drunken PR shenanigans, and a whole ton of gaming. But which have been your favourite three games you've played this year? They don't even have to be from this year to be honest, just whatever three games have meant the most to you this year, old or new.

Ahhhhhh. I’m inwardly screaming trying to narrow down this year to just three. It’s been a fine, fine year for my tastes and there are a lot of games competing for that top three. I’d just like to give a huge honorary mention to both Red Dead Redemption 2, Hollow Knight (2017 but shhh) and God of War. I had a fantastic time with them but in the intervening months, with thoughts left to mellow a little, I think this is my final top three.

Dragon Quest XI

Quite simply one of the best JRPG’s I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing, and a return to form from one of my favourite series. I’ve always preferred Dragon Quest over Final Fantasy but it can be tough at times. New games are few and far between and we always have to wait an age for them to come West. DQXI absolutely did not disappoint though. It’s got charm in spades, a thoroughly enjoyable world to explore, heaps of content to explore, and it manages to feel fuzzily nostalgic yet new at the same time. If you haven’t had the pleasure yet, I think Dragon Quest XI is an unmissable time for JRPG fans.

Battlefield V

This is a game with a laundry list of problems but damn if Battlefield V isn’t the most fun I’ve had with a Battlefield game since BF2. There’s lots of things I could nitpick but overall it doesn’t get away from this being one of the most addictive, bombastic multiplayer shooters I’ve played in yonks. The launch maps are, by and large, fantastic, every class is unique and rewarding, while each and every weapon demands a different playstyle in order to maximise its potential. BF5 has got its hooks in me real bad right now and I can’t wait to see what content they put out next.

Celeste

I’m an absolute sucker for 2D platformers and it’s an incredible feat that even this age-old genre can continue to surprise me in 2018, some 25 years after I first played Super Mario Bros. Celeste is nails-hard yet rewarding, simple yet deliciously deep, and features the mysterious holy grail of platformers - an actually engaging story! Oh and that soundtrack... woof. Getting all those strawberries was the absolute death of me though.

Over to you now then, what were favourite games of 2018? Anything in particular that stood head and shoulders above the rest? Or was it a disappointing year for new releases? Let us know!
