Up For Debate - What Are Your Top 3 Games of the Year 2018?

Phew, it's been quite a ride this year. 2018 has been yet another stellar year in gaming, even if it arguably never quite hit the heights of 2017. There's been smash-hits, lots of angry people, drunken PR shenanigans, and a whole ton of gaming. But which have been your favourite three games you've played this year? They don't even have to be from this year to be honest, just whatever three games have meant the most to you this year, old or new.

Ahhhhhh. I’m inwardly screaming trying to narrow down this year to just three. It’s been a fine, fine year for my tastes and there are a lot of games competing for that top three. I’d just like to give a huge honorary mention to both Red Dead Redemption 2, Hollow Knight (2017 but shhh) and God of War. I had a fantastic time with them but in the intervening months, with thoughts left to mellow a little, I think this is my final top three.

Dragon Quest XI

Quite simply one of the best JRPG’s I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing, and a return to form from one of my favourite series. I’ve always preferred Dragon Quest over Final Fantasy but it can be tough at times. New games are few and far between and we always have to wait an age for them to come West. DQXI absolutely did not disappoint though. It’s got charm in spades, a thoroughly enjoyable world to explore, heaps of content to explore, and it manages to feel fuzzily nostalgic yet new at the same time. If you haven’t had the pleasure yet, I think Dragon Quest XI is an unmissable time for JRPG fans.

Battlefield V

This is a game with a laundry list of problems but damn if Battlefield V isn’t the most fun I’ve had with a Battlefield game since BF2. There’s lots of things I could nitpick but overall it doesn’t get away from this being one of the most addictive, bombastic multiplayer shooters I’ve played in yonks. The launch maps are, by and large, fantastic, every class is unique and rewarding, while each and every weapon demands a different playstyle in order to maximise its potential. BF5 has got its hooks in me real bad right now and I can’t wait to see what content they put out next.

Celeste

I’m an absolute sucker for 2D platformers and it’s an incredible feat that even this age-old genre can continue to surprise me in 2018, some 25 years after I first played Super Mario Bros. Celeste is nails-hard yet rewarding, simple yet deliciously deep, and features the mysterious holy grail of platformers - an actually engaging story! Oh and that soundtrack... woof. Getting all those strawberries was the absolute death of me though.

Over to you now then, what were favourite games of 2018? Anything in particular that stood head and shoulders above the rest? Or was it a disappointing year for new releases? Let us know!

Bruh ikr, PC exclusives have been meh for the past 6-8 years, with some rare exceptions... so sad... :/
They either goofy or clunky or just bad... :/

PC exclusives is a stupid term. Exclusives on consoles exist to sell that system. That's their purpose. They have to be well made to attract people to buy the specific hardware and be a part of their ecosystem. Making them available everywhere else defeats their only purpose. Unless your game is a complex title whose controls couldn't be translated well to consoles simple control scheme, then developing a PC exclusive target is a waste reach and a very poor decision.

No specific company benefits from you buying a PC or building one yourself. There are multiple manufacturers for multitude of different components and unless you lock your specific game to a certain combination of hardware there is no reason to build an exclusive title. Good luck selling that if you do so. Your best bet is to make it accessible to as many people to buy them because you don't have a contractual obligation to create only for that specific device.

true, but there are PC exclusives, otherwise i'd buy the game depending on the price since i really don't care for the system I'm buying it and PS4 and Xbox One games are very cheap compared to PC, I have to go to g2a to match prices, of course multiplayer is PC only due to consoles requiring you to pay to use the internet you are already paying for.

I never said there aren't PC exclusives. I said that unless what you're building is only achievable on PC, developing for PC exclusively is not the smartest business idea. Honestly you're the first one I know who said that console games are cheaper than PC ones. There are multiple stores, bundles, discounts and key sites all which usually sell games at lower prices if you don't care to search around for them.

Consoles have one store each and games there are rarely discounted, bundled or sold at lower prices compared to their PC counterparts. I think you can almost always find a cheaper PC version on some of the stores or sites without even visiting the very gray key seller market.
A friend has an Xbox and I've rarely seen a game on there with a hefty or longer discount. Very rarely both.

That's why I said I have to go to G2A to match prices, I never buy digital console games, only physical and there is big competition in my city and I got god of war 2018 for 30 euro, Bloodborne Goty for 20 euro, Uncharted 4 for 12.5 euro, The order 1886 for 12.5 euro, will be getting horizon zero dawn soon for 25 euro, so yeah... and tons of games are super cheap post-release and only a few months later. There are many 2015-2017 games for 5-15 euro on discount physically currently...

And not always is a PC exclusive because it can't be done on consoles, but you are right most of the time it's because there is no mouse and keyboard on consoles in games and many MMOs, all strategy games and MOBAs are not on PC for that.

I think the big, key thing for me is not so much exclusivity but PC-first. As in, the developers create their game to be played on PC, with PC mechanics and quality. If they then decide to port to console, that's fine. But when it goes the other way around we very often see dumbed-down mechanics/quality and wonky controls/menus.

2018 was a bad year for me. Most of the games that came out were disappointments for me..
The ones I enjoyed the most were Red Dead Redemption 2 and Project Cars 2(Which didn't even came out this year)

Honorable mention to Ni No Kuni 2. It wasn't the best game I've ever played but I still really really enjoyed just being in that world.

Oh, I also feel like Banner Saga 3 needs some love. I could easily put it up there with Battletech and MYZ. I had just forgotten about it.

If Final Fantasy 15 counts, since PC release was this year, definitely that. Otherwise Monster Hunter World was great. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is also on the list. From smaller releases, Two Point Hospital and FrostPunk were amazing. Just take random one out if FF15 counts.

If I could, I would also add Divinity Original Sin 2 which had Definitive Edition released in 2018, but that would likely be pushing it bit too far.

Ohhh, any excuse I have to give Divinity 2 another GOTY award I'd easily take. That game definitely deserves it. It's not one of the best games I ever played for nothing.
