It turns out not even one of the most recognisable superheroes on the planet still struggles when he comes up against a god. Kratos threw an axe at Peter Parker's head and he was dead before he could even splurge a load of gross-looking stuff back. God of War emphatically destroyed Spider-Man, booking a 12 Games Semi-Final slot against Battlefield V.
But mourn not for Peter as we must move onwards, towards bigger and better things. It's the battle of our two open-world heavyweights. Two games that exist on the very idea that bigger is better. It's the all-consuming Assassin's Creed Odyssey up against the fastest selling game of the year, Red Dead Redemption 2.
How the community voting works
Each day at 17:00 GMT two titles will battle each other. Whichever title receives the most votes in the poll wins, and will then go through to the next round. 12 games in total will be battling away, and the first six rounds will take place from today and over the next five days - one battle per day. The six games that win will make it through to the semi-finals, where three further 1v1 fights will take place. The winners of these three battles will then make it to the three-way final to decide the ultimate game this Christmas.
Each bout will last 23 hours, and the winner is whichever game receives the most votes in the poll, which can be found towards the bottom of each article.
Round 1: Fight 3 - Assassin's Creed Odyssey vs Red Dead Redemption 2
AC Odyssey's biggest advantage is that it simply gets around more. While Red Dead Redemption 2 is exclusive to consoles, for now at least, Odyssey sleeps around a bit more and can also be found on PC. If fidelity is your thing, well, AC Odyssey is the only one that can actually be played at a locked 60 frames per second.
But there's more at play here than frame rates. Assassin's Creed Odyssey offers quite simply one of the largest, most gorgeous open-world playgrounds we've ever seen. It's humongous, cramming in hundreds of hours of content. RDR2 is much smaller scale meanwhile, but moves at a comparative crawl as Arthur Morgan and his band of troublemakers wend their way across America.
We're anticipating this one going the full 12 rounds. No game is going to be in a hurry to finish the fight. Red Dead Redemption 2 will be too busy putting its boxing gloves on in slow-motion while AC Odyssey will be running across the crowd's heads trying to hunt down a pesky treasure chest. There has to be a winner though, and which game will win the fight to the death?
Get voting below for your winner, and remember to check back tomorrow for Day Four of the 12 Games of Christmas, where two more titles will battle it out to earn a place in the next round. The winner of today's competition will face the winner of tomorrow's face-off in the semi-final on 17th December!
