Boldly going where no man has gone before, games are unique in their ability to explore the final frontier. They're usually more fiction than science but sci-fi games have a capacity to amaze us like few others. And in 2019? Well, there's a whole lot more sci-fi fans to get excited about.

Satisfactory

One of those pesky Epic Game Store exclusives, don’t let that get in the way of what could be an even bigger breakout hit for Coffee Stain Studios. Satisfactory’s name neatly sums up its entire being. As an engineer, you must build and automate an (eventually gigantic) factory, as well as heading out, exploring the world and finding new materials. From the snippets we’ve seen, it looks part Factorio, part, clicker, part No Man’s Sky. There’s full 3D exploration and online co-op, so Satisfactory has all the hallmarks of becoming one of the first hits on the Epic Games Store.

Star Wars: Jedi - Fallen Order

An enigma, outside the briefest of teases, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is set to be an original Star Wars story based upon the surviving Padawan and set just after the events of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. Maybe we’ll finally find out about Jar Jar’s dastardly scheming. And, er, that’s about it. Most importantly though, Titanfall 2 developer Respawn is in the cockpit for this one. They’ve proven themselves a sublime talent during the course of this generation so Holiday 2019 should be a very exciting time indeed for Star Wars fans...

Biomutant

Games have advanced a heck of a lot over the last two decades but somewhere along the way, something was lost. Something intangible, but it was the inherent gamey-ness, even despite the attempts at realism. Everything I see Biomutant brings me back to those days. It looks like a weird, wonderful, colourful post-apocalyptic kung-fu fable RPG starring a humanoid fox thing. Biomutant promises to be a game that’s happy to throw a dozen different genres at you in as many hours. Will it be any good? There’s only one way to find out.

The Surge 2

It wasn’t quite Dark Souls but the original The Surge did a damned good impression. Only it swapped the towering castles for sci-fi planetscapes and robot-filled scrapheaps. The Surge 2 is more of the same hardcore action-RPG hijinks, this time in the quarantined city of Jericho with more open areas, greater exploration, a revised crafting system and proper character creation. It’s The Surge, but bigger and hopefully better.

Rebel Galaxy Outlaw

Rebel Galaxy was the cowboy space western we’d dreamed of, and Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, Double Damage Games is doubling down on the cowboy aesthetic. Expect an absolutely stonking soundtrack (it’s a got 21-hour soundtrack and counting) and some awesome space combat. This time around though we’ve been promised a more involving storyline with RPG-like progression and handcrafted mission design. The one potential downside? It looks as if Rebel Galaxy Outlaw will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store.

I'm very interested to see what Biomutant is going to be like. I hope the PC port is decent.

For those asking where Cyberpunk 2077 is on this list, keep in mind that a 2019 release isn't certain yet. I wouldn't be surprised if it releases mid-late 2020.

Cyberpunk easily tops it for me. Also Outer Worlds looks great. And while by all means I won't say they will be GotY based on as little as we know, they could flop, even if this is unpopular opinion. But still, they got my attention and I am looking forward to learn more with hope of us getting great game, as always.

I would say Cyberpunk 2077 is no 1, Outer Worlds is second place.
