Another year, another Call of Duty, and just days into 2019 it appears as if Infinity Ward is beginning to tease this year’s iteration of the best-selling first-person shooter.
Ashton Williams, senior communications manager at Infinity Ward, has been tweeting out a series of cryptic messages, including a skull with glowing eyes, the grim reaper looking out across the desert, and ghostly shapes. Don’t go worrying yourself though, it’s almost certain that Infinity Ward’s next COD will not be a Call of Duty: Ghosts sequel. That is one avenue that is not worth chasing down for Infinity Ward.
No, Infinity Ward is going to be hellbent at getting back on track. This is the original Call of Duty studio, lest we forget, and they’ve fired a few blanks this gen with Call of Duty: Ghosts and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. In the meantime, IW has been getting outshone by Sledgehammer and Treyarch.
Instead, 2019 is looking like the year Infinity Ward gets back to its roots. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 or a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot seem to be the two most likely scenarios, something a little more grounded in reality than what we’ve had before. In fact, the teaser images from Williams could possibly be referring to Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley, a Call of Duty stalwart who’ll be very familiar to Modern Warfare fans.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 sounds like a very safe bet for the next game. Infinity Ward is probably hoping to get in the complete opposite direction of the interstellar antics of Infinite Warfare, so something a lot grittier and down-to-earth could be on the cards.
New Call of Duty games are typically revealed in early spring so we shouldn’t have too long to find out once and for all.
What direction would you like to see the new Call of Duty take? Is it time to go back to the series’ roots?
