Hitman 2 developer IO Interactive has announced it’ll be opening a new studio based in Malmö, Sweden, which will work alongside its current studio in Copenhagen.

The new IOI studio in Malmö will be helping IO Interactive both in terms of new content for the Hitman franchise and, perhaps most excitingly, on new franchises. IO’s success outside of Hitman has been a mixed bag, from the underappreciated Freedom Fighters through to Mini Ninjas and, umm, the Kane & Lynch games.

“We are super excited and proud to announce IOI Malmö. We will expand IOI to join a buzzing game developer community and bring our own unique IOI culture to this amazing town”, says Hakan Abrak, CEO of IO Interactive.

“Furthermore, this will expand our muscles for creating brand-new and exciting endeavours, new universes, new franchises. In other words, IOI Malmö and Copenhagen are one family” Abrak continued.

While IO Interactive had mixed success with new franchises while under the wing of Square Enix, we’re definitely keen to see what the studio can create away from the bright lights of Hitman. IO is an outfit that knows a heck of a lot about interactive sandboxes and complex clockwork routines and is very capable of cranking out some fascinating ideas.
