We could have got our first clue as to what AMD’s Ryzen third-gen ‘Matisse’ CPUs will bring to the table with the alleged leak of a 7nm AMD processor in the UserBenchmark database.

Twitter user TUM_APISAK is becoming a bit of a reliable source for hardware data leaks, particularly AMD-related, and he’s discovered an AMD engineering sample in UserBenchmark with the codename 2D3212BGMCWH2_37/34_N.

The AMD CPU in question is 12 Cores and 24 Threads, utilising the same AM4 socket as the rest of the Ryzen processor range. Outside of Threadripper, AMD’s current crop of CPUs maxes out at 8C/16T with the Ryzen 7 2000 series but we could be set to received a core count bump with the next generation.

As for the benchmark results themselves the AMD 12-Core engineering sample is categorised as ‘Outstanding’ and in the top 4.9% of CPU benchmark results. We can also see the current sample has a base clock speed of 3.4 GHz, peak boost of 3.7 GHz and an average turbo speed of 3.6 GHz across all cores. This is an engineering sample, however, and we’d expect AMD to push these figures higher.

Other key specs that can be ascertained from the results include a 105W TDP for the 12-Core processor and 32MB L2 cache for lower memory latency.

The inevitable IPC gains are also on the cards. AMD’s 12-Core CPU scores 130 in single-core floating point performance, some 13% higher than a Ryzen 7 2700X. Combine this with less conservative final boost clock speeds and Zen 2 could deliver some formidable improvements. In terms of the multi-core benchmark results, this chip is beating Intel's Core i9-9900K.

All we now really need to know to paint a fuller picture is AMD's planned pricing for this monster. Undercut the Intel Core i9 and we could have the fight on our hands at the top-end, particularly if Intel's 10nm woes continue.
