When I read in the email that Amazon was going to be a faction in Age of Wonders: Planetfall, I can’t tell if I was pleased or dismayed to discover it wasn’t actually the all-consuming, gluttonous retailer itself. For a moment I pictured jetting off into the stars with Jeff Bezos as my sidekick. Together we’d conquer planets, enforce terrible working conditions, and avoid paying our intergalactic taxes together. Such japes.

But sadly it wasn’t to be. Age of Wonders: Planetfall’s Amazon faction are actually a band of expert bio-engineers and terraformers. The Amazon have used genetic mutations to become an all-female species with mobile and stealthy troops that thrive in forests, a bit like the elves in Total Warhammer. Quite clearly the best thing about them is the Tyrannodon, a dinosaur-like alien with lasers on its head. Yes please, I bet Bezos wishes he was here now.

Anyway, enough nattering, you can see all about them in some detail in the new gameplay trailer below.

Previous Age of Wonders games have been fantasy-themed, while Planetfall is sci-fi 4X strategy with empire building, planetary warfare, and a proper story-based single-player campaign to work to.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall is coming to PC ‘soon’.
