Apex Legends has launched with an absolute bang. Not only did Respawn’s battle royale shooter hit a million players in just eight hours, but it’s also now cruised past a staggering 10 million within the first 72 hours of launching. This means that figure of one million joining in the first eight hours hasn’t slowed down, it’s actually sped up.
As a new competitor to the battle royale scene, these results are obscenely impressive. Fortnite: Battle Royale hit a million players in 24 hours and took a full week to hit seven million. Apex Legends is currently outpacing Fortnite’s launch by some distance.
In a message to fans, Respawn Entertainment co-founder Vine Zampella said the game has also surpassed one million concurrent players. That makes Apex more popular than any game on Steam in the last 24 hours. DOTA 2 currently holds the top spot on Steam with a 24-hour peak of 802,000.
“This has been a truly incredible journey,” said Zampella. “We tested and tweaked. We argued and agreed. We got to a point where we felt some magic. We knew it would be risky to take the franchise in this direction, to go free to play, and do a surprise launch. But we fell in love with Apex Legends and wanted, needed, other people to play it too.
“We hoped you’d love it as much as us, but never in our wildest dreams could we have expected the outpouring of support and positivity we’ve seen. From all of us at Respawn, thank you for giving us and Apex Legends a chance. Thank you for joining us on this journey. This is just the beginning! We have so much more in store for you this year.”
Congrats to Respawn then, they deserve it after Titanfall 2 was criminally overlooked. This is the hit they've been looking for. I haven't actually given it a shot yet but Jon seems very impressed.
