Ubisoft has revealed the new Outback map coming to Rainbow Six Siege, set amid Australia’s Red Heart for the upcoming Aussie-themed season of content.
Outback takes place in and around an Australian motel and gas station, deep in the desert. It looks a very nice, vibrant change of scenery from what we’ve had lately, filled with little nooks and crannies and a glut of smaller rooms alongside an imposing Clubhouse-style garage.
“We divided the map into three distinct sections – the Garage, the Motel, and the Restaurant – and put a lot of effort into making sure each section is recognisable, even from far away,” said assistant level design director Jacques Wong. “There are specific colours for each section, and we used lighting and geometry to direct the player’s gaze to where they need to go.”
The focus for Outback appears to be on tighter level design with a less maze-like structure. “We wanted to emphasise the impact of player decision-making, so for example, there’s a limited number of doors between each section” Wong said. Players will have to make bigger decisions about which area they head to, while it also enforces a greater degree of destruction as players make their own routes. In theory, this should mean for some slightly more predictable choke points, counter-acted by the ability to open up new sightlines. All of this should allow players to better plan their choices and tactics.
Outback will be coming to Rainbow Six Siege as part of Operation Burnt Horizon, the first season of a fourth year of content for Siege. It’s impressive they’ve got this far, especially after the slow start, but Rainbow Six Siege doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere soon.
