The Metacritic Top 100. A curiously difficult list to break into, a game needs to average a review score of 93% or higher to even stand a chance of making the grade. For the uninitiated, Metacritic is an aggregator of critic reviews, pumping out an average score based on potentially hundreds of reviews. A game, in theory, needs to be universally loved to make it onto it.

Out of a casual bit of interest, I wondered how many of these games I'd actually played, but more on that later. But it all got me thinking about what we deem to be the best games of all time, as well as a few pertinent questions such as have these greats stood the test of time?

Now, it goes without saying that this list is flawed in some ways. First and foremost, Metacritic only takes in accounts reviews that went live after the site started tracking videogame reviews. This means many older games don’t make the cut, including the entire SNES and Mega Drive libraries. Some of them have had remasters and can creep in, but there are a ton, and I mean a ton, of older games that are glaring omissions from this list. Secondly, the world seemed to have a bizarre obsession with American football and Tony Hawk’s games in the early noughties. The former definitely won’t hold up, while the latter were great games but very much of their time.

With that in mind, here are the 100 best games of all time according to Metacritic aggregated review scores:

I don’t whether I should be proud/worried that I’ve played 85 of the games on this list, but hey ho. My list of shame, if you can call it that, of the games I haven’t played, comprises NFL 2K1, Baldur’s Gate II, Gran Turismo 3, Madden NFL 2003, Madden NFL 2002, Chrono Cross, Madden NFL 2004, NCAA Football 2004, Virtua Fighter 4, Gran Turismo 2, Pac-Man Championship Edition, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Starcraft 2, and Minecraft. Of those games, I’d say I only feel like I’m missing out on Divinity 2 or Baldur’s Gate 2, the rest don’t hold much appeal.

But, this Up For Debate isn't just about which games you may or may not have played. I think there are a lot of arguments to be made that this certainly isn't the strongest 'Best Of' list ever, with some odd entries and some even stranger omissions. The complete absence of Dark Souls, for example, which according to aggregated reviews is a worse game than World of Goo. Nope, I've no idea either.

So, get voting in the poll how many games from this you reckon you've played, and let us know below whether you think is a deserving list of the 100 best games of all time!
