3DRealms, they of Duke Nukem 3D fame, have announced Wrath: Aeon of Ruin, a new first-person-shooter powered by the 23-years-old Quake 1 engine.

It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition; and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call... The Twilight Zone.

No, we're not knee deep in 1996. 3DRealms just appears to be determined to go as old-school as possible for Wrath: Aeon of Ruin, a fast-paced, retro-inspired fantasy FPS. In Wrath, you are the Outlander, washed ashore in a dead world and tasked with hunting down the Guardians of the Old World, exploring decrepit ruins, discovering secrets, and blowing everything into crimson-soaked giblets.

Wrath: Aeon of Ruin will feature an arsenal of nine weapons (each with multiple fire modes) as well as 10 powerful artifacts and legions of deadly enemies. It’ll be composed of three hub area and 15 sprawling, interconnected levels with all the nifty secrets we used to expect from games.

Multiplayer fans should be in for a treat as well. There’ll be all the usual multiplayer modes powered by QuakeWorld netcode, along with support for four-player co-op in the campaign, either online or over LAN, all capped at 666 FPS, naturally.

Wrath: Aeons of ruin is coming to PC, PS4, Xbox One and Switch in Summer 2019.

Oh and it seems to be coming to Steam, it's on their store now........ though if there's a boxed copy like the trailer shows, this may be one of the few instances in recent times where I choose the box!

I kinda don't like that they're reusing alot of Quake 1 assets...... then again part of me is glad and wish Quake would've gotten a proper sequel set in the same lovecraftian world as the original instead of the alien shooter that we got with Quake 2...... either way, this is refreshing AF..... and I'd really love if it's a boxed game.... I'd put it right next to my original copy of Quake xD

Quake II and so on really had nothing whatsoever to do with the OG Quake other than the name. Which is a shame. But when you know how weird the development of the first game was - you realize why. With it originally having supposed to have been a dark fanatsy RPG and all that :D

lol yeah when I brought home my copy of Quake 2 and popped it into the old CD-ROM drive with the anticipation of an 8 year old on Christmas morning, I was pretty dissappointed that it was so far off from the first game that there were like zero connections.... I was like "TF is this alien $h17?!?!?" and then I proceded to blast aliens and cyborgs..... and it was "ok" but it just wasn't Quake.

If it comes in a Big Box, just as it's shown at the end of the trailer, I'll buy it at day 1

Man... just use modern engines... you won't impress anyone by going full old school. Just look at Dusk it is better than all old school 3D shooters and it's made on Unity, maybe, just maybe that's why... -_-

I don't see anything wrong with this game. In fact going full on old old school is probably exactly what we all need. I personally miss the old days of gaming.

And before you tell me I should just play some old games then, here's why that won't work for me.

The only thing keeping me from going back to them is lack of compatibility for modern OS or limited resolution options. Especially the latter as running a game on a low resolution on a new monitor will make the game look repulsive (pixellated and whatnot).

I want old school games but better, I don't want another version of the old games, back in the day there was a massive flood of 3D old school shooters, I don't want another. I want a better old school shooter.

Just play Dusk and you will see how it trumps all old 3d shooters, be it Doom, Duke Nukem, Blood, Quake, Heretic, Hexen, you name it dusk is that but much better. This will most likely be just another retro/old school shooter...

The fact that this is on the Quake 1 engine means that you can just copy the PAK files over to any of the numerous Quake source ports for a shinier, sharper, more updated experience...... Most of the source ports even have updated mechanics that allow them to play more like a modern FPS.... you know, WASD, Mouselook, Jump, strafe, etc..... even though Quake brought many of these mechanics to FPS in the first place, so will likely already feature them.

I'm with you on wanting a brand new game in this style that doesn't use the old engines.... but this is also good!

Oh, I agree, but I've grown tired as most shooters on the quake engine without it being super heavily modified are very similar.

Interesting choice, to make and release a new game on a very old engine. Looks like the only thing that isn't so retro about this game are the texture resolutions. They look to be at least 1024x1024, maybe 2048x2048 even.

Did anyone else notice that they used the old windows logo? Ah, the days of playing Star Wars: Dark Forces on my old Windows ME laptop.

I know this is odd to say but, these days games give me eye strain because of all the details given to all the environment, and then I get distracted and not even notice where enemies are nor even notice dropped items. It could be because I'm gaming on a 22" monitor, anyone can relate to this ?

Yeah but it's usually poor design that does it. When games look more realistic they need to work harder to draw your eye to the correct places

I tend to agree. If no extra glows/pointers are added - it's very easy to miss items. Realism and all, but the game needs to be FUN. And Quake 1 was a LOT OF FUN. Level designs especially left me in awe - the pacing was so fluid it was insane.

I can only recommend everyone who's into this kind of stuff to check out Dusk on Steam, it's amazing and looks extremely similar.

On a side note, they should get that snazzy ray-tracing support into this.

Second side note - one of those weapons looks like UT's Bio Rifle and I don't want that

The Quake 2 Ray tracing demo seemed pretty sweet - and very taxing, even for the RTX cards!
I think I'd just prefer just a spit-shine remaster of the old Quake 1 # 2 (hell, any of those era shooters - Doom, Jedi Knight, any Quake, Heretic)

It's true Jon, no one likes the bio rifle. I used the pistol or the impact hammer over that.
