Ys Net dropped a fairly extensive new trailer for Shenmue 3 during the annual Magic event, showcasing plenty of the new gameplay from the martial arts adventure game.
They’re keen to remind us this trailer for Shenmue III is still very much a work in progress but it does provide a decent look at both the adventure game/investigative side of Shenmue 3 and the more action-based antics when Ryo gets into a scuffle.
In terms of world-building, the original Shenmue games were unparalleled at the time. Shenmue 3 is comparatively lower budget but it seems as if an immersive world is still top of the agenda. The original aim was for Chobu, the main area of Shenmue 3, to have 50 NPCs, but are there now more than 500 unique NPCs through the game, each with their own weekly cycles.
The fighting in Shenmue 3 unsurprisingly bears a passing resemblance to Virtua Fighter, so we’re expecting a fair bit more depth than we had in Shenmue II. Players less interested in fighting game mechanics can use AT (Automatic Transmission) mode to string together combo attacks, while fighting game aficionados can use MT (Manual Transmission) to have absolute control over Ryo during fight scenes. There’ll be different fighting stances to use and an extensive skill tree of moves for those who really want to delve deep into the martial arts.
Shenmue 3 is currently barrelling toward an August 28th release on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. We’re still not holding our breath that it’s going to hit this date but here’s hoping.
