There are noises about the announcement of the next Sony Playstation.
Of course these rumours have been happening for the past 3 or 4 years, but we are actually getting closer to a very real launch period...
The big console manufacturers, Sony and Microsoft have been pretty clear in the past that they aim for a 10 year shelf life for their consoles. But as the advancement of technology comes at us ever faster, that 10 year tech gap really starts to show on the aging consoles. Even after 4 years the average PC has usually left the consoles behind. And so the time has finally come for the next console.
Officially the new system of Sony does not have a name yet, but PlayStation 4 would be the most obvious. For now, however, it goes by the name of Project Orbis. The new system will be revealed shortly before the massive gaming expo next year, known to many as E3 2013.
Sony also revealed that there is a new develop-kit being sent out. The kit is rumoured to be in a PC-case, whereas the previous version only consisted of a card. There should be a third version in January, which will be closer to the final specifications of the next-gen console. The final version should be done in Summer.
The new PlayStation would be able to play new games in 1080p without problems, on 60 fps and in 3D (hardware-wise). The develop-kit is said to be equipped with 8 or 16 GB RAM. The new kit is also using Blu-ray, just like it's predecessor, and a 256 GB hard-drive.
Sony is also focussed on a smooth and efficient interface. This comes down to the player being to do anything on the menu, at any time, even when playing a game. For example; you can buy a DLC pack for a game, whilst currently playing the game. Also, Sony still did not confirm that the new kit will be called the "PlayStation 4".
There is a chance that the new gen consoles will be with us by the end of 2013, but people are also talking about Christmas 2014 as a release date. So it is hard to say for sure at this time. What we can say is that the PC is looking more and more favourable when it comes to playing the state of the art games.
What are you most looking forward to, the next Playstation, the next Xbox or the flood of PC titles that will be released, while everyone waits for the console tech to catch up?
