PlayStation 4 Finally Gets A Reveal Date

Written by Luuk on Fri, Nov 2, 2012 4:39 PM

There are noises about the announcement of the next Sony Playstation.

Of course these rumours have been happening for the past 3 or 4 years, but we are actually getting closer to a very real launch period...

The big console manufacturers, Sony and Microsoft have been pretty clear in the past that they aim for a 10 year shelf life for their consoles. But as the advancement of technology comes at us ever faster, that 10 year tech gap really starts to show on the aging consoles. Even after 4 years the average PC has usually left the consoles behind. And so the time has finally come for the next console.

Officially the new system of Sony does not have a name yet, but PlayStation 4 would be the most obvious. For now, however, it goes by the name of Project Orbis. The new system will be revealed shortly before the massive gaming expo next year, known to many as E3 2013.

Sony also revealed that there is a new develop-kit being sent out. The kit is rumoured to be in a PC-case, whereas the previous version only consisted of a card. There should be a third version in January, which will be closer to the final specifications of the next-gen console. The final version should be done in Summer.

The new PlayStation would be able to play new games in 1080p without problems, on 60 fps and in 3D (hardware-wise). The develop-kit is said to be equipped with 8 or 16 GB RAM. The new kit is also using Blu-ray, just like it's predecessor, and a 256 GB hard-drive.

Sony is also focussed on a smooth and efficient interface. This comes down to the player being to do anything on the menu, at any time, even when playing a game. For example; you can buy a DLC pack for a game, whilst currently playing the game. Also, Sony still did not confirm that the new kit will be called the "PlayStation 4".

There is a chance that the new gen consoles will be with us by the end of 2013, but people are also talking about Christmas 2014 as a release date. So it is hard to say for sure at this time. What we can say is that the PC is looking more and more favourable when it comes to playing the state of the art games.

What are you most looking forward to, the next Playstation, the next Xbox or the flood of PC titles that will be released, while everyone waits for the console tech to catch up?

Look at the bright side, now you can buy a console on day one and enjoy the long lifespan. The downside is the possible problems with a rushed console release, though that is doubtful. Time will tell

Yup, Raystlyn is right. Or if you can you can always upgrade your rig. But it all depends on your budget. :)

I think that as technological progress speeds up, consoles will become things of the past. They just won't be able to keep up with PCs ability to be upgraded. But for now, I will probably buy the new PS4, because I'm a college student who really can't afford to upgrade my rig every 1 or 2 years.

until recently console games where the preferred choice for most games over PC now that technology is more advanced most game devs are making games for all platforms and majority of people are switching to PC (in this gamer opinion)

And also the cost of the games is also a factor which turns them to pc side.Pc counterparts are always more cheaper than the console ones :)

However consoles aren't as strong as PCs and recently many games on consoles are now coming on PCs. And PC gaming is the best since it allows you to modify settings for special effects and Anti-Aliasing. And also PCs can support a tight budget. A new console comes for about $500. A new graphics card comes out to about $100-$400. So I disagree.

So let me formulate your argument for you:
If a platform has more games, it's better.
This would mean mobile devices are the best gaming devices.

EHHH lol, dont forget you need a motherboad and a case and a cooler and a CPU and memory and hard drives.. Those can be costly and need to be factored in too

You are right too Mazarb. My HD 5750 1024MB can beat consoles easily. My cousin has the PS3 and I'd rather prefer playing on my PC. It's just that PC has more setting enhancements you can't make on consoles. Oh and debat0r I have to agree with you. :)

Yes I agree with you dmc but you have to constantly upgrade your pc in order to play the high graphics games. (like Watch Dogs). in a console you just put in your HD DVD or Blu-ray and just play play play! :D

Yeah, but you can update your pc. That's a pro too, as you don't need to replace the whole damned thing when it's outdated. If you buy a high end pc (-€800) you'll be able to play any game for the next 6 years, and just buy a new gpu afterward :)

Yes debat0r, you are right again! If you get a console you have to constantly upgrade again and again. But with a PC you can buy it once and upgrade it's internal hardware for cheaper than buying a new console for $600. And I also, have a Blu-Ray drive installed in my PC. However I do understand your argument fRost36. :)

But sometimes in the PC you may get a lower FPS rate than the PS3 . for instance you play GTA IV on your PS or Xbox it does not lag or hav a sudden FPS drop. (Multiplayer not included) in a PC if you have a lower or bad proccessor you cannot play the game at its highest settings.

Looks like there will be extensive changes in development. This time i think i will get into 3D gaming hard, tried it and loved the concept. It's better than 3D movies at least you get to control the characters.
Will be looking forward for more news.

At the time of release I bet it will be better to build a PC then spend $1000 (I'm guessing thats what they market it for) on the Playstation. 60fps is certianly a good reason to buy though. :)

They had better make the little munchers happy and include cross game chat. The little munchers pay $60 yearly for Xbox Live in order to talk to their "e-friends" regardless of what game they are playing. It's already on the Vita so I'm guessing it will be available on the PS4.
