UPDATE: As if it ever needed confirming, a newly-leaked promotional trailer for Borderlands 3 has confirmed the Epic Store exclusivity on PC. Steam branding is conspicuous by its absence as publisher 2K/Take-Two have opted for the shiny pile of Epic cash.

The benefit to Gearbox and 2K will no doubt be a sweet cash deal, as well as not waiving the 5% royalty fee that would typically need to be paid to Epic for using Unreal Engine 4.

The trailer also confirms a September 13th release date for Borderlands 3, exactly as previously leaked.

With both Borderlands 3 and The Outer Worlds now timed exclusives on the Epic Store, it's abundantly clear Take-Two wants to throw its weight behind the store. The increased publisher cut is clearly speaking to them and we don't expect this attitude to change anytime soon.

Of course, this now raises some major questions about the future of Rockstar titles. Red Dead Redemption 2 will surely be in Epic's crosshairs, and Take-Two has demonstrated it's only too willing to make such a move.

Original Story: 02-Apr-2019 - It Looks as if Borderlands 3 is a Timed Epic Store Exclusive, Launches September 13th

We didn’t really want to start a Tuesday morning with news of a second big upcoming game that looks as if it’s going to be an Epic Store exclusive, but here we are. Borderlands 3 appears to be a timed Epic Store exclusive according to now-deleted tweets from the official Borderlands Twitter account.

Gearbox has said it’ll be ready to share more details about Borderlands 3 on April 3rd, although it seems some wayward tweet scheduling has let the cat out of the bag early. “Mayhem is Coming September 13. Pre-order now for the Gold Weapon Skins Pack!” read the first tweet.

A second, again now-deleted, advert, also contained a brief teaser clip for Borderlands 3 with the Epic Games Store logo displayed in the bottom-left corner.

Now, this doesn’t rule out Borderlands 3 coming to other stores, but there is no Steam logo and Epic’s past form with its aggressive approach to onboarding exclusives heavily hints Borderlands 3 will be an Epic Store exclusive.

Gearbox CEO has referenced the leaked tweets a bit cryptically, saying “2K/Take Two has exclusive publishing rights for Borderlands 3 and makes all decisions regarding price-points, territories, distribution and platform partnerships. Please direct all inquiries regarding any of those topics to 2K.  We are *just* the talent.

“As a customer, I’m happy to shop in different stores - already do! I’ve bought games from Xbox, Playstation, Switch, Steam, Origin, GOG, Humble, Uplay, Epic and other stores. To me, exclusives are fine when they come w/ advantages and when they are short – say, six months :)”

Now, it doesn’t take much reading between the lines to understand Borderlands 3 is probably going to be exclusive to the Epic Store for six months, meaning it’ll come to Steam in March 2020.

On a side note, Pitchford also mentioned cross-platform multiplayer, so it sounds as if Borderlands 3 could end up one of those rare games which allow PC, PS4 and Xbox players to game together. “2K’s decisions aside, myself and the team at Gearbox have a very keen interest in cross-platform play,” wrote Pitchford. “We believe multi-platform support is a pre-requisite and Epic’s leadership with cross-platform support is helpful to our interests there.”

Where will you be buying Borderlands 3?

Our favourite comments:

I swear if this keeps up I will even start boycotting every game that runs on the Unreal Engine.

NeoPGX

controversial opinion but i dont play game launchers but games dont care whats it on as long its a good game that remains to be seen.

zenmaster

They are making it a lot easier nowadays not to buy a game on the day of release, and patiently wait for day-1 patches, bug fixes and cut content to be added. I may buy this later on, as GotY edition, which nowadays is the full version.

Because Unreal Engine is also an Epic product and any commercial games made using that engine has to pay royalties to Epic. If people boycott even games made with the engine, that will cut off even more money.

I know that.
So you want one of the best, if not the best game engine to die? Makes no sense at all... Without the unreal engine, 5-6 dozen of amazing games and classics wouldn't exist...

If the BS with the Epic game store exclusivity stops, it won't have to die. But if they persist like a stubborn-ass mule then so be it.

But no I don't want the engine to die, I just want the BS to stop.

The real thing here is that steams cut is unreasonable and every big publisher just makes their own launcher to bypass them. Also dont worry EA has that fifa, madden money they are doing just fine.

im honestly ok if people boycott epic store for exclusivity or just dont like it at all (its pretty bad honestly) but unreal engine? cmon, for example one of my favorite upcoming racing simulators, assetto corsa competezione use unreal engine. Its available on steam(if its important) and its actually amazing. Thats like saying i hate chinese government so i wont buy any game which was made by chinese devs. Or i dont know something?

I'm okay with boycotting either of them, that's people's choice I guess. I just think what Epic is doing isn't really anything of note in the grand scheme of things. It's an annoyance, for sure, but all it really means is I play my games on Epic or wait and buy them somewhere else. I've boycotted Amazon for two years now but I'm guessing plenty of people don't care about that either, so it's all perspective.

Typically any boycott I engage in isn't for my own gain, as boycotting for my own personal benefit feels fundamentally pointless. That's just choice rather than a boycott in my eyes.

Or borderlands 3 is built on unreal engine and publishing it on epic exempts them from paying the engine licencing
fee and is overall more profitable.

I think Borderlands 3 will fail in Epic Store. I think Borderlands 3 sales on Epic Store 150,000 units will be sold (September 2019 - May 2020), on Steam 1,500,000 units will be sold (April 2020).
Or, more Borderlands 2 unit will be sold, than Borderlands 3 while not release on Steam.

A lot of fair points there, although a couple I disagree. In terms of mature communities, Steam has one of the worst, most hate-filled communities I've ever witnessed, full of overgrown manchildren. And my controller works fine with the Epic Store.

But everything else I can agree with. Cloud saves in particular I find a real annoyance as I'm regularly switching systems.

yeah steam's controller support is very comprehensive and Epic can't compare on that front. You also can't use a controller to navigate the interface (unless you put some time in to emulate mouse usage on your controller)

I'd argue the "manbaby" thing, as you call it, is typical of giant platforms, rather than Steam in particular. Let something grow big enough and there will be negativity (as seen literally everywhere). Steam just happens to be a very big and a very social distribution/community platform, so you can't exactly avoid the bad that comes with that size. Epic will get there too, unless, of course, they never end up implementing the social features... The two platforms are incomparable - plain and simple: thousands of games and a huge community with full-fledged forums and social features vs like 20 games and nothing in terms of social stuff.

For sure, but they're not exactly great at controlling it, are they? I guess with an audience that size it's tricky, and it's also easy to forget that 3.8 billion people are stupider than the average person so there's bound to be some weird stuff going on in there.

This is the type of stuff that's really going to seal the deal on Epic. Who will stay strong and wait? Who will pirate the game and be denied co-op? Who will buy it on Epic, and worse, try to talk their friends into buying it? If Borderlands 3 does good enough on Epic it will probably effectively silence all but the most vocal haters of the store and cement itself as a store that you're probably gonna have to get used to.
