Treyarch dropped a big surprise for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 fans yesterday with the announcement of Alcatraz, the second ever map for its Blackout battle royale mode. And the good bit? Alcatraz is going to be available today for PS4 owners, and next week on PC and Xbox One.

“Take no prisoners on the new Blackout map, Alcatraz, available tomorrow on PS4, other platforms to follow,” says Treyarch.  “This is no joke, storm Alcatraz on PS4 and drop into Blackout for free on all systems [today]. Alcatraz is coming to all systems at a later date.”

Alcatraz looks to be distinct in the battle royale world in that it’s extremely small in scale. Set on the iconic prison island in San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz puts 100 players together in close-quarters battle royale combat. It promises to be fast, furious, and chaotic, suiting the Red Bull-chugging COD audience’s taste to a tee. It sounds like a match made in heaven, playing to the strengths of Black Ops 4’s gunplay in a manner which Blackout normally doesn’t.

Just to sweeten the deal, access to COD: BLOPS 4 is completely free on all platforms for an entire month. From April 2nd to the 30th, you can download and play Blackout, and the new Alcatraz map, for free on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. It sounds like a risk-free opportunity to give Call of Duty’s battle royale mode a shot, and from my experience with it you can probably have your fill and move along well before the month is up.
