Over the past 30 years, the world of gaming is littered with the corpses of fallen heroes, as well as those who took an arrow to the knee but are still tragically limping on. The landscape of games publishers and developers looks dramatically different today than it did 20 or even 10 years ago. Many have gone defunct, some have disappeared leaving barely a trace, while others have absorbed by AAA and forced to smash together new games every other year, come hell or high water.
A quiet moment please as we think of our fallen heroes. Of Westwood, Lionhead, Pandemic, THQ, Psygnosis, Acclaim, Accolade, Core Design, Free Radical Design, Factor 5, and more.
Then there also those who have fallen on troubling times. BioWare has arguably suffered at the hands of EA, forced to fall on its own sword with Mass Effect Andromeda and Anthem. Rare was bought by Microsoft in one of the biggest moments in gaming history, only to get pushed into making Kinect titles before recovering with Sea of Thieves. And Bethesda? Well, Bethesda’s walking a treacherous tightrope between success and failure right now, downtrodden after Fallout 76 but dangling Elder Scrolls VI and Starfield in our eyes.
So what about all of these? Well, it’s pretty simple. Which publisher or developer would you like to see return to their former glory, whether that’s Westwood cranking out Command & Conquer games, Valve remembering that solo players exist, of Sega bringing out the Dreamcast 2. Ahem.
Over to you then, which game developer or publisher would you like to see back in the big time? Let us know below!
