Mortal Kombat 11 mod unlocks 30 FPS frame rate cap and adds Ultrawide 21:9 support

In our Mortal Kombat 11 PC performance report, we discovered it was a game that runs decently, but not without its fair share of problems. Most egregiously, the frame rate is capped to 30 frames per second at certain times, such as Fatalities, Fat Blows, cut-scenes, and menus. It’s really quite inexcusable in this day and age, but lucky a modder has already cobbled together an MK11 mod which removes the 30 FPS frame rate lock.

The mod comes courtesy on Endri Lauson, who’s created a pretty nifty tool that not only removes the default 30 FPS lock but also adds full 21:9 support for those with Ultrawide displays. Install this mod and Mortal Kombat 11 will have a new FPS cap of 60 FPS and Ultrawide support in all modes and menus, including the Krypt, Fatalities, and videos.

A quick word of warning though - The creator has acknowledged this mod does get flagged by some antivirus programs which may classify it as a keylogger because it registers your key presses in order to enable certain effects. Install this at your own risk then. Plenty of folks are saying it’s legit and works just fine, but you can never be too careful.

The mod itself can be grabbed from here, and it’s a pretty simple process to get up and running. Simply unzip and run the file ‘FpsCapRemover_by_Endri_v1.001.exe’, then open Mortal Kombat 11. Unfortunately, you’ll have to go through this process every time you restart MK11.

Once you’re in-game, pressing F11 will remove the 30fps cap while pressing F10 will removing black borders for Ultrawide display users.

Just goes to show how little effort many studios still put into their PC ports.. releasing a PC game with a 60 FPS cap in 2019, hell even in 2012 is just completely unacceptable.

This problem has persisted since MKX and INJUSTICE days, they always lock super moves and menus to 30fps. I think it is a deliberate thing they do and it is really annoying.

a similar mod was released MKX yesterday fyi, now MKX is 60fps all the way!

Haha, didn't I tell you, was the same for SoulCalibur VI, and someone had that right on release day as well was crazy.

Something to do with consoles, no doubt... What that has to do with the PC development - I have no clue, but that's the usual excuse for garbage in PC ports.

It's the company that ported it. They made a judgment call. You can't blame the original developer for the platform they did it on, you blame the people porting it who just copied and pasted as much as possible to lower their work and increase their profits.

That doesn't explain why this was the case in last 3 MK games, considering different groups worked on porting it to PC. Regardless though, even consoles run fighting games at 60fps, so this transition to 30 is even less explainable, on either platform. It's a very bizarre design choice overall.

The 30fps cap is on the stuff outside of the actual fight. The consoles have the same limitations. For PC, it was just a quick swap of assets to get it running and call it good. The same can be said for all the other games. Doesn't matter if it's a different company. The longer you spend on the game, the more money you are actually putting into it.

But why though. If the most demanding part of the game, the part that actually plays, is capable of running on consoles at 60fps, why is the rest capped at 30? It doesn't make sense overall. They aren't saving much on anything and I bet the menus aren't that hard to run.

Because they think that people don't notice or care. Pure laziness. People buy it and it's keep happening. If more people voted with this wallets, companies would change in a heartbeat.

Maybe console "gamers" don't notice, but us PC folk do. 30fps is just pure lag, and that's even before I get into how laggy 60fps feels when you experience 165Hz refresh rates :)

Gamers will notice. It pisses me off with mkxl for Xbox. I was hoping for a 1x update that would fix that but then I saw a guy playing mk11 and realized how annoying to continue seeing that is. My guess, the developer always puts all in on fighter movement and everything else is minimum effort.

There's really no excuse for this game to be made capable of running at 60fps right off the bat.

Even console versions of fighting games run them at 60fps. From what I heard anyway.

On an unrelated note, that is the first time I ever seen Subzero unmasked.

it runs at 60fps, the cut scenes and some other thing don't which this mod unlocks

Game runs at 60fps, but for some reason the menu, character selection, fatal blows and fatalities run at locked 30. It's really strange, and even stranger considering previous 2 games did so as well and were rightfully criticized for it too.

Maybe they were going for the more cinematic experience with those parts of the game because that's how they envisioned it?

But to each their own.

Probably, but it still should've at least been an option. I know, at least to me, those cuts are definitely noticeable and somewhat jarring, they just don't fit, and such sudden jumps definitely don't feel cinematic for me. It just genuinely feels very unnecessary, because after all, I am playing a game and not watching a show or a movie.

"Cinematic" is such an old excuse that has literally no weight not only in modern digital cinema, but even more so in gaming. This is not running at 24fps (which was the lowest amount of acceptable frames per second for fluid motion in film without eating film reels unnecessarily), the motion blur isn't real nor does it run at a 180 degree shutter angle (I challenge anyone who doesn't deal with film to even know that without googling), the systems running the game clearly have more than enough frunt for 60fps, interpolating the animation keyframes is piss-easy, especially if you're doubling the framerate (30 to 60)... No excuses that I can find for this 30fps nonsense.

If i recall i think most Fifa games have done the same thing, i know when i play Fifa 18 (i lock my fps for freesync), it halves it whenever its a celebration which makes no sense.

I don't understand why they were ever capping those shots at 30fps, it's just kind of bizarre thing to do and it's really jarring when you notice the transition. I'm glad someone made a work around, but it's still kinda stupid that there isn't an official version of it.

Simple lack of resources/time, as with many other games.

What resources or time are there to lack? Game released not even a week ago and some guy in that time managed to do what they didn't, as a mod.
So I really don't believe that was in any way a problem for them, unless they're just incredibly incompetent but they clearly aren't.
It's still a bizarre thing to do and no good reasons as to why.

Nice one! will be sure to try it out when I get home, I swear I don't know why they thought 30fps lock is a good idea, especially for the Krypt, it runs HORRIBLY. Also I hope there are some modders out there working on classic MK costumes for the ladies.
