We love surprises, and there aren’t many better surprises than finding out the Legend of Grimrock team have been working on a new game, and said game is out in just a fortnight’s time. The tongue-garbling Druidstone: The Secret of the Menhir Forest is a turn-based tactical RPG, eschewing first-person dungeon-crawling in favour of top-down isometric adventuring.

Druidstone is being developed by Ctrl Alt Ninja, two members of the previous 4-man team that worked on the Legend of Grimrock series, who have since opened up their own studio. The plot focuses on a group of druids whose Archdruid goes missing, while a darkness begins to envelop the Menhir Forest. It’s up to a band of magic-toting rural warriors to head out into the wilderness and find out just what’s going on.

Cue copious adventuring, hand-crafted, turn-based missions, and punishing tactical combat wherein every turn is vital if your party of heroes intends to make it out alive. The Grimrock DNA shines through with the promise of non-combat puzzle levels as well, which will reward players with rare equipment for their troubles.

“Druidstone: The Secret of the Menhir Forest is a labor of love from the makers of the critically acclaimed Legend of Grimrock series,” explains Ctrl Alt Ninja. “Druidstone is a tactical, single-player, turn-based roleplaying game, which combines the best qualities of modern RPGs with the elegance of tactical boardgames. Every action, every turn counts as you control your party of heroes through handcrafted, challenging missions with varying, and often surprising, objectives.”

Originally announced a couple of weeks ago, Ctrl Alt Ninja has now confirmed Druidstone: The Secret of the Menhir Forest will be coming to Steam on May 15th, so there’s really not too long to wait at all. There’s a lot to love in the trailer as well, with Druidstone looking like a resolutely old-school combat-focused RPG with some mighty promise.
