Up For Debate - Who's the best bad guy to shoot in your FPS? Nazis, Zombies, Aliens, Dinos..

Pondering, as I so often do, about all the visceral carnage in games like Wolfenstein Youngblood I got to thinking, who in a game do I, and of course you guys, most enjoy taking down when playing your games?

First off, Nazis are a clear and obvious choice. Because I feel like I am cleansing the world of something obviously wrong. I cant help but think that if you took your eyes off them for a moment then they may hurt your dear old grandma, for something as daft as having the "wrong" name. So they have to go.

But then I started thinking about how games with swarming groups of rotten Zombies are great to smash through. Standing in the cliched shopping mall, at the top of an escalator, looking down at the gathering zombie flesh pile, who are trying to work their way up to me. Bouncing comically off one another in their mindless pursuit for my beautiful brains. And I know, a well placed shotgun shell to the head would send the Undead packing, until the next one lumbered into position, always threatening to overwhelm me once I run out of shells.

Oh and then there are the dinosaurs. While obviously they are often portrayed as dangerous animals in a lot of games, my only real issue with them is a game normally puts me into a position where it is me or them and they are normally equipped with more death dealing tools than I am, like their big teeth and massive crushing bodies. And they often want to have me as a snack, which I find a little demeaning. Come on there are literally tonnes of other giant creatures they could eat, rather than little me. So while they are not doing it out of any malice it can still be quite a laugh to bring down a giant T-Rex who seems to be hell bent on using me as a tooth pick.

But then dinosaurs have their redeeming feature that I always prefer games where I can ride around on the backs of these powerful extinct creatures. So for that reason they are probably my least favourite to take down from this list.

Oh and what about those invading aliens? Thinking they can come here and mistreat our planet. It could be individual hunter style aliens, something like the famous Predator or perhaps swarms of aliens invading our planet in a tide of death dealing savagery, all of these are great fun to take down.

And sure, it can really depend on the genre of game as to what makes for the better enemy. I am mainly thinking about which First Person Shooter bad guys are normally most fun to destroy, but I would love to hear your thoughts by genre, if they differ for some reason.

Also cast your vote in the poll below as well based on my few gaming bad guy suggestions and let us know which other game bad guys are missing from my musings.

Who do you find most fun to take down in an FPS game?

Our favourite comments:

Deamanoid Alien Nazi Zombies, cause Dinosaurs are lovable creatures, really:-)

When it comes to grunts, which most enemies are, I couldn't care less who the enemy is. If the crosshair goes red when I point at em, they get the bullet. Anything that fits the story, anything that fits the game is probably going to be enough for me.

I know it says 'bad guys', but sometimes, depending on the scenario, I find myself shooting civilians. Robbing a train and murdering innocent people in Read Dead Redemption II was legit, the first game that made me question my morality, lol. Their screams and reactions of, or to others being shot felt so real and traumatic. The Shock value was unbelievable on that game. GOTD (Game Of The Decade) on my book. Can't wait for PC release :)

But we've been killing innocents since GTA 1, Postal, manhunt, Call of Duty, Hatred, Prototype, even Roller Coaster Tycoon, hahaha XD

Yeah, for me at least, I guess it just didn't feel "real" enough. Can't really put my finger on it. However, there's exception of COD: MW2, that was hands down bloody massacre and made little 13 year ol' me uncomfortable, lol.

10 year old me enjoyed every second of it, true chaos, a real conflict and it was so badass to play as the bad guy even if I was undercover for the good guys. XD

Haha. I remember the game warning me, "The following mission is considered highly disturbing, you may skip if you choose to". Little gangster me was like: I aint no bitch! Was not expecting the following at all!! lmao, still one of the best missions till this day. I'm excited they're bring back the series :)

Apparently for EA games the best thing to shoot at are Russians, koreans and latins (that was pretty lame in COD: Ghost)...

I might be missing the joke, but CoD is not a property of EA, it's a property of Activision.

I just love killing zombies. It's too bad that most zombie game suck, especially when they're melee focused trash with weapon "fragility".

Can't lie, I like killing all sorts of things, would be nice if there was a crazy kind of game where nazis invented a time travel machine, you kill lots of them and recover it, travel in time to kill baby Hitler but oops the device malfunctioned and you end up in the Viking age with lazer raptors, the nazis hunt you through time, you discover a portal to hell, fight a bunch o demons and kill some big shot demon lord, hell is angry at you and they send nazi zombies after you, discover another portal that takes you to 2077 where you repair the time travel device and travel far to the future where there is only war (1)

(1) Unify the galaxy under your banner and invade hell, kill everything in your path with your fusion powered lazer dragon and legions of genetically enhanced humans and aliens, and at the end enjoy life on a remote tropical planet with your trusted bros and allies that you've recruited along the way, marry a super hot Princess and have 2 kids but oops one of them turns evil because it was corrupted by a demon prince in disguise, by this time you're too old to fight and must complete the Ascension ritual to become a God and in the sequel your other kid must find his corrupted sibling across the multiverse and kill/redeem him/her.

Dude none of those matter, if there aren't characters, with good backgrounds, character development, fitting personality, abilities, feats, strengths and weakenesses, that you get attached to, to hate them and want them dead and want to shoot them.

random nazi bad guy or random alien or whatever means nothing to me and there is no difference except maybe in some game mechanics...

Just putting textures on 3D models and calling aliens, or nazis, or zombies or whatever is poor, lazy, boring, bad game design and story telling.

There should be a short flashback sequence of around 30ish minutes briefly going through the life of any new enemy you point your crosshair at.

Time or a desire to play? If they're just grunts like in most titles, that'd be just a useless waste of time.

He said a new enemy, not just grunts. That's just more of the same.

The way it was worded sounds like he was talking about grunts, but could be I was jumping the gun. Nevertheless I do think flashback sequences are one of the worst ways to introduce new characters as it's in most cases just an exposition dump, and those in my opinion are big failures of story writing.

Well no need for flashbacks, but a good introduction, through quests or missions, or even playing as the character him/herself and such, or just seeing the character develop as we are doing our own thing.

Damn yeah! Around 2-3 years ago when I and a friend extensively played heroes and generals, we could join in a match together, or one could join and the other could queue for that battle with a chosen soldier (could be from the other faction/enemy team). It didn't work well, since being in the queue had almost no priorities, even when the battle had slots available for players to join.
Anyway, we were talking over discord and had a lot of fun, trying to find each other, not getting noticed by other enemies and eventually killing each other.

I would give my vote to Arachnids/giant insects. Too bad they are quite rare to see in videogames. A new Starship Troopers FPS would be a dream come true for me.
