Up For Debate - Is Borderlands 3 the game which crumbles your Epic Games Store boycott?

We’re still not entirely sure how Gearbox can lurch so magnificently from mega-success (Half-Life, Borderlands) to abject failure (Battleborn, Duke Nukem, Aliens: Colonial Marines) but they’ve always been a curiously unpredictable bunch. What is entirely predictable, however, is Borderlands 3’s success. At this point, the reviews barely matter. Borderlands 3 is going to fly off the shelves by the million through brand recognition alone.

If you want to get a picture of just how huge the Borderlands franchise is, think about this: 5 million Borderlands games have been sold in the past three months alone. There hasn’t even been a new Borderlands game for five years and yet, somehow, Gearbox’s old titles are still flying off the shelves.

Borderlands has morphed into a monster, and Borderlands 3 is the 80-foot giant which is going to eat almost every game in September for lunch. It’s going to end up picking Gears 5 out with a toothpick before throwing it onto the sad carcass of GreedFall. No offence to those games, we think they’ve got every chance of being great, but Borderlands is a rare gaming juggernaut.

Just to top it all off this week, with hype reaching fever pitch, some insanely talented marketing guru hooked up a deal between Borderlands and one of the biggest games on the planet - Fortnite. Bloody Claptrap is now in Fortnite. Pandora is in Fortnite. 80 million players who may have never heard of Borderlands now know exactly what Borderlands 3 is, as well as when it’s coming to the very gaming client they already play Fortnite. It’s a devilish bit of marketing that, like it or not, is surely going to prove a turning point for the Epic Games Store.

Borderlands 3 is, naturally, an Epic Store exclusive. It’s also the biggest Epic Store exclusive ever, and by some distance. The amount of cash which must’ve been thrown around to make this happen has to be obscene. Gearbox has probably made billions from Steam, so to throw all that out the window for a partnership with the most hated store since Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett’s pie shop is quite the move.

Which brings us around to us, or, well, you, more precisely. Borderlands 3 is coming to PC through the Epic Games Store on September 13th. There’ll be no pre-loads, you’ll be lucky if you get cloud saves, and there’ll be no community discussions, but you’ll be able to play BL3 just fine provided you hand over 60 bucks. The big question, however, is will you? Is Borderlands 3 your breaking point at which you forgo your Epic Store boycott? Are you going to hold out for Steam, or does the exclusivity deal mean you’ll never buy Borderlands 3 at all?

Last time around, you were fairly unanimous with your decision making. More than 2/3 of you said you were boycotting the Epic Store in our previous Up For Debate, and just a quarter of you said there was a game which could make you change your mind.

Get voting and remember to let us know why below!

Are you planning to buy Borderlands 3?

If you are planning to buy BL3 how and when will you do it?

How much would you pay for Borderlands 3 on Epic Store?

Our favourite comments:

My friends are weak and bought it or plan to buy it on EGS and I really don't want to buy it there, FML!

Virate

Me and my friends are all waiting for the steam release. I just bought BL1 + The Handsome collection so we're busy until then. :P

I am going to wait till I can get the GOTY version on a Steam sale. Although with the Epic, and Sweeny's antics over the last year I am beginning to re-think my policy on sailing the seven seas.

Given the recent news regarding Randy and his antics, 2k and how it dealt with SupMatto and his channel, Epic and it's barebones store, and Tim Sweeney's treatment of his customer base...

...has frankly just made me absolutely repulsive to games from any of these people and publishers. So absolutely not gonna buy BL3 unless there are any good changes in these situations which I don't think is gonna happen any time soon.

It's kind of a shame when the typical "greedy ceo" negatively influences the publicity surrounding a game that was developed by a bunch of hard working devs who have no say in any of the drama..
People like Pitchford should really avoid any publicity. The guy just seems like so damn arrogant and way too focused on money, it only hurts their image.

Yeah it's really become difficult nowadays to let the publishers know that customers are not happy with their games. Because if you boycott a game you're hurting the devs and if you do buy, then you're telling the publisher and big wigs it'

I would personally try to think of it as being a customer rather than a supporter. There's no obligation on our end to support Pitchford or the dev team, it's just: is the product worth buying to you when you consider who is behind it?

When it comes to hurting the devs, any time you buy a game you're choosing not to spend that money on a different game, supporting different devs, so I wouldn't get hung up on it.

I don't think you should get too hang up about it. Those devs are definitely getting paid to work on these games, and while they could be missing some bonuses, they should always have enough to fill the table and sleep in a bed.

Even though i like looter shooters like Destiny 2, Div2, Warframe, etc, I don't like how Bordrelands 3 looks. Its character models seems weird to me. That alone is sufficient to avoid it for now.

I never cared if it's Steam or Epic, both are scum DRM, and I couldn't care less if it's on steam or epic. That said I prioritize games first, so I compromize on PC and buy them on those annoying DRM stores as I have no real option otherwise. It'd be cool if it's on GoG, but if any of my friends get it, it won't be on GoG and we won't be able to play together.

After seeing so many DLCs for Borderlands 2 I'll just wait maybe about 1 and a half year before I buy it. I liked all Borderlands games and I'm looking forward to Borderlands 3, but not on Epic. The best scenario for me would be a physical copy or GoG. If not then only Steam.

Though I own both Borderlands games through bundles which included them, I've never been really interested in the series to start with. Epic Games also is a piece of junk storefront and spyware for the Chinese company Tencent, so it'll never have a place on my hard drive.

I think more people should be talking about the Chinese regime's foray into gaming. Glad people are bringing it up.

If it reviews well and I deem it worth full price, then I will buy it on Epic Store at full price. If not, I may either wait for discount or not bother at all. I am not boycotting Epic Store and if game is really good, I am willing to pay full price. If not,... well there is huge backlog catalog of amazing games I either didn't play at all or I never finished.

Probably get BL3 eventually regardless of store. Will be getting FFVIII Remastered first and that's currently exclusive to Steam like all new SquareEnix and Capcom PC games.

out of the 100+ people who voted right now, only 12 are considering to buy it on the Epic Store. Shows how much Epic is disliked, even with a big title like this.

It doesn't matter to me which store it's on. I just always wait for a while after launch to buy anything. Let the patches get made and the price come down.

They already confirmed "no microtransactions" but loads of "totally not microtransactions-like cosmetic DLCs", so there may absolutely be actual DLCs incoming.

You can stick it up your a$$ Tim Swine. I don't care how good it is, not one bit. As long as it's epic fail exclusive, it's a no go for me. #FCKEPIC

Gearbox wants to be greedy a now they are going to feel the backlash. I suspect PC sales wont be nowhere near what they want.

I played some Borderlands and Borderlands 2 and they're OK but I'll be passing on Borderlands 3. It won't be my first purchase from the Epic Games Store.
