'We're a PC developer first' says Blizzard as Diablo Immortal reveal anniversary approaches

We’re fast approaching the one-year anniversary of that fateful day which Diablo Immortal was revealed to the world. “Do you guys not have phones?” are some famous words which will go down in gaming history, even if the reaction was hilariously overblown. Toxic fandom really did take on a wild new meaning that day; anyone would think Blizzard had just announced it was going to murder the audience’s cats rather than revealing a simple mobile Diablo spin-off.

11 months later though, and the dust has largely blown over. Diablo 4 is going to happen, Diablo Immortal is still on its way, and no one really stands to lose out at all.

In the run-up to BlizzCon on November 1st though, Blizzard president J. Allen Brack has felt moved to come out and reassure the fans that Blizzard is still a PC games developer first and foremost.

"I think the thing that we did a poor job of when we announced Diablo: Immortal was contextualizing what we think the future can be and what we think of mobile in particular," said Brack during a chat with Gamespot.

"I also think the key thing that was lost, that we did a poor job double emphasizing, is we are a PC developer first. And then we look for other platforms that we think are awesome that can support the types of game play experiences that resonate with the type of games and values that we want to put forth into the world. And the example of that is, there was a little bit of a backlash when we announced we were going to port Diablo 3 to console as well."

Diablo Immortal isn’t actually even being developed by Blizzard, which probably sets a few alarm bells ringing. Chinese giant NetEase is handling the mobile spin-off while Blizzard’s full resources are dedicated to its in-house projects, which most likely includes Diablo 4. Brack has tried to allay a few of the fears by saying Blizzard is aware of a ton of mobile games which “we feel like are predatory when it comes to monetisation”

It sounds as if Blizzard does have its finger on the pulse here, lending hope to Diablo Immortal being a better game that many have given it credit for. That is a faint hope though, with Activision-Blizzard not exactly on top of the pile of publishers you'd trust with monetising a mobile game. He’s probably fighting an uphill battle here as the folks angry about Diablo Immortal being a mobile game are angry despite knowing literally nothing more than the fact it’s exactly that, a mobile game.

Expect to hear plenty more on Diablo Immortal, the future of the Diablo franchise, and just about everything Blizzard-related, when BlizzCon runs from November 1-3 in Anaheim, California.

Will you give Diablo Immortal a go?

Honestly all I want from Blizz right now is Warcraft Reforged, and Warcraft IV after that.

Yes. I forgot completely that I pre-ordered Warcraft Reforged. I don't see any news about the game at all.

In a way that is bit worrying, but I am pretty sure they are holding it back for December, so they can sell it for holidays. And Blizzcon starts on 1st November, so they might be holding it back till that, especially if it will come for holidays. It could be just announcement and "oh, by the way, you can play it next month" type of thing. But it could also be delayed for 2020.

The Blizzcon thing makes sense. On the Blizzard Launcher in the corner of the game's page it says released by 31/12/19, so maybe they will just talk about it again at Blizzcon and release it somewhere in December. This almost year-long silence about the game is worrying to me too because it is something I know most fans would definitely have wanted for so long (Not as much as Warcraft 4, but yeah). Because of all this anticipation, one would think they would not even shut up about the game.

Hell no, from what I know, just a month after Blizzard said how they don't care about microtransactions and want to create quality game, photo leaked of Blizzard developers getting thought about mobile monetization by NetEase. And slide was about enhancing items with chance of failing, guess where micortransactions come in here... if you said you can pay for better chance, you get an A. :-D

Plus I got Switch and DS just so I could avoid plague that is mobile games. So no thanks, I will pass, same as I did with Dungeon Keeper, C&C Rivals, Fallout Shelter,... Diablo Immortals is here to hunt whales and I won't support that. Blizzard can shove it where sun doesn't shine. And if they want to prove they are not mobile developer, that they are for PC,I want actions and not just empty words.

Or in other words, well, Diablo 4 on PC would be good start. Making it great with no bulls attached would be huge step in right direction too. But I have my doubts, Blizzard is now part of Activision and Acitvision won't give up on bulls, like normalizing mobile free to play mechanics in full priced games.

Well considering that Asia is 59.26% of the population, that's not bad at all XD
But I doubt it will be very popular there either.

Unless activision/blizzard plans to release this game on FULL and can be played offline for a price. It will surely have a hard time getting some players to play this game.

Sorry Blizzard but after Diablo 2 LOD all you did in the Diablo franchise is a total fail and I am a huge lover of Diablo from the beginning.

All Blizzard have to do is separate from Activision and start focusing on rebuilding themselves and their games, but giving the heads have already left to give space to Activision's men, it'll hardly happen, sadly...

yeah, except that since 2017 all(or almost all) managing positions and all "boss" positions were taken by activision...

That's the saddest part, and seeing how Activision is moving on their own games, mostly MTX gargabe, i'm sad for Blizzard future, since it's actually Activision-Blizzard
