RIP and tear, Doom Eternal has been delayed until March 2020

Doom fans, I come bearing terrible news. The eagerly anticipated Doom Eternal has been delayed. Originally scheduled to launch on November 22nd, Doom Eternal has now been pushed back all the way to March 20th, 2020.

As ever with these things, the official line is this is a necessary step to allow Doom Eternal to become the base game it can possible be.

“Throughout the development of DOOM Eternal, our goal has been to deliver a game that exceeds your greatest expectations across the board,” writes Id Software.

“To make sure we’re delivering the best experience -- for DOOM Eternal to live up to our standards of speed and polish -- we’ve made the decision to extend our launch date by a few months to March 20, 2020.  We know many fans will be disappointed by this delay, but we are confident that DOOM Eternal will deliver a gaming experience that is worth the wait.”

Just to soften the blow somewhat, Id Software has thrown in a few extras. The Invasion Mode will allow players to enter other player’s game as a demon.

The recently announced Doom 64 is also now being thrown in as a pre-order bonus on all platforms. Simply pre-order Doom Eternal and you’ll get yourself a copy of Doom 64 on March 20th, 2020. It’s a bit of a shame they can’t get it out there sooner, to be honest, to give Doom fans something to chew on during the delay.

And lastly, some fairly brutal news for Doom-nuts on Nintendo Switch. Not only has the Switch version of Doom Eternal also been delayed, obviously, but it’s now going to launch after the other platforms. That’s a hell of a wait.

I have to say it’s a case of out of the frying pan and into the hell-fire as a result of this delay. November was looking fiercely packed with the likes of Red Dead Redemption 2, Death Stranding, Shenmue 3, Planet Zoo, Need For Speed Heat, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order,  and Pokemon, so it makes sense for Doom Eternal to dodge this rush. However, it’s now launching within a matter of weeks of Watch Dogs Legion, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Animal Crossing, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2, and Cyberpunk 2077. Doom Eternal can’t seem to catch a break.

This also raises big questions over Google Stadia’s launch. Google hasn’t announced a firm release date for its streaming service outside of ‘November 2019’ but Doom Eternal was the cornerstone of its Stadia demos. With that off the table, Google Stadia’s launch is looking even more tepid.

Anyway, following the delay, Doom Eternal will launch on March 20th, 2020, for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia.

In my time i have never seen a year, a single year that has been this busy in my entire life. Games popping here and there is ok. This year was and still is overwhelming for gamers (like me).
Bethesda thinks that they will make sales a month before Cyberpunk. Cyberpunk is already sold. CDPR holds the numbers.

Doom doesn't have longevity of an RPG and whenever Bethesda decides to release it, it won't have any impact on anything else but their wallet. There is also a number of games which you didn't mention and it's ok because, games released by Bethesda now have a huge flag over it and people are much more cautious than couple of years ago.

I was thinking about buying few more games this year but i think i've had enough. Games such as Doom, Outer Worlds and RDR2 will have to wait.

Anyways wasn't planning on buying Doom but will for sure, sometime laters (read: a year after launch or even later). Some other games and publishers take priority over Doom. Until then, "rip and tear until it's done". Bethesda, you done f*cked it up! Good luck id Software

Bethesda's own games vs published games are night and day, what are you on about? Id did an awesome job with DOOM 2016 and ticked every box with Eternal. Besides, it's a shooter, not an RPG that's been padded out with fetch quests.

Why would a shooter compete with an rpg?

Because they decided to publish it in March. A month before Cyberpunk? If you have enough money to spare on multiple games and genres, fine. If you can't afford, what will you get 1st? Not diminishing the genre, but games being under Bethesda publishing don't do good lately. No doubt Doom will pass good or great, but from me not a full price. Not interested in FPS multiplayer since the days of online competition from Q3 Arena in excessive mods. Speaking of competition, people tend to compare everything. Doom can't catch a break. Jon is right about that.

and thank goodness for that, although they have stated that online aspect is being revamped for Eternal to make MP more appealing.

Everything's in competition with everything, most people like multiple genres. I'd imagine the cross-over of Doom and Cyberpunk 2077 fans, in particular, is immense. I want both, you all want both it seems.

When I look at March next year, whether or not I buy Doom Eternal is going to come down to Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2's launch. If that's out on or just before Doom's launch then it'll take priority, then by the time I've finished that Cyberpunk 2077 will be out. Then I'll be looking at a 2 or 3 month old Doom game and thinking 'that's probably going to price drop heavily soon, I'll wait'.

If Doom Eternal came out in January? Day one.

Yes that's true, eliminating genre difference for people like us who like most genres, but do you think it's got less competition in the fall/holiday season or in the spring?

I wouldn't say that either are particularly great for it. I'd have tried to push for January/February but I guess we have no idea of how much time they genuinely need for development (if at all).

The November launch was a toss-up between Doom and Star Wars Jedi for me, and Doom probably would've won unless Star Wars ends up being genuinely outstanding. But then you got Death Stranding and Shenmue 3 right around it and I'm not so sure.

Overall I'd say Spring is slightly better for it.

Januray is the post-new year, post-christmas burnout, broke period, so I don't think January is that good.

Yep. February would be a safe bet. Resi 2 did great. I don't see any reason why Doom wouldn't do the same unless we missed something. Then again, we have Rage 2 effect that didn't do that great and was released in May.

This smells like something bad!
They delayed the game one month from release!
I really pray that the reason for this delay isn't some excuse to implement those crappy micro transactions or some anti-consumer DRM.
