Giddy up pardners, it's Red Dead time. Launch day has been quite the rollercoaster for Red Dead Redemption 2 fans on PC. Some have been busy cruising the wilderness atop their fine steeds, while others are left messing around with launchers and config files, desperately trying to find a way in.

It is a mixed bag, there's no doubt about it. From the off, it is apparent that Red Dead Redemption 2 isn't a polished, highly optimised experience. RDR2 is a demanding game with fantastic visuals and spotty performance, and one which only very few will be able to enjoy looking its finest.

Red Dead Redemption 2 benchmarks and frames per second analysis performed on GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming 8GB | Intel i7-5820K @3.6 GHz| 16GB DDR4

For our benchmarks, we tested out how Red Dead Redemption 2 performed while using an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 MSI Gaming X 8GB Edition graphics card equipped with 8GB video memory. It’s backed up by 16GB DDR4 memory and a 6C/12T Intel Core i7-5820K 6-Core 3.3GHz CPU. This system is in excess of the recommended specs, exceeding both the recommended CPU (Core Intel Core i7-4770K 4-Core 3.5GHz) and GPU (Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060), so we're expecting it to run pretty well.

These benchmarks were conducted using RDR2's official benchmark tool.

  1080p 1440p 4K
Low 98.2 70.6 39.5
Medium 82 51.6 27.5
High 63.5 39.5  22.9
Ultra 28.3 23.7 17.6

The overall consensus is that Red Dead Redemption 2 is one for the future. A modern Crysis, if you will. Ultra graphics are rock hard to run at a stable frame rate, even at 1080p with a GeForce GTX 1070. Perhaps some of the newer GeForce RTX 20 Series graphics cards may fare a lot better with Ultra but Nvidia's previous-gen is certainly suffering with the level of detail.

That said, a GeForce GTX 1070 8GB is still clearly very capable of playable frame rates. We would recommend even 1080p/High, or 1440p/High with a 30FPS cap, depending on whether you want to prioritise frame rate or resolution. The console version of Red Dead Redemption 2 is capped at 30 FPS so it's still relatively easy to breeze past this with a decent graphics card, although the Xbox One X's 4K locked 30 FPS is a tough target to beat.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Low vs Ultra Graphics Comparison

Red Dead Redemption 2 benchmarks and frames per second analysis performed on GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming 8GB | Intel i7-5820K @ 4.3 GHz| 16GB DDR4

Well, this right here is where my performance reports from the PNY GeForce RTX 2060 XLR8 will go. The problem is, I can no longer run Red Dead Redemption 2, let alone benchmark it. I successfully got to the main menu on my first attempting but never again. I've tried restarts, driver re-installs, verifying the game files, tweaking the configs, deleting the configs, closing all other running processes, turning off any antivirus - the works.

Each and every time the game crashes on boot and ends with the error message "Red Dead Redemption 2 exited unexpectedly". I am not alone, there are hundreds of people reporting the same thing and this appears to be a very widespread issue.

Just as soon as I can even get Red Dead Redemption 2, I will update this with benchmarks (along with the fix that (hopefully) eventually solves the issue.

We will continue to update this article with additional benchmarks and findings as we get to grips with RDR2 on PC.

Rockstar thats good, thats a bit of a wait but its straight forward to crack unlike this forza horizon business lol

What I don't understand is why would Rockstar give 1060 as recommended GPU if it doesn't even get 30fps at ultra or even high settings. Zero optimization.

recommended specs don't mean you can run it on max settings... I really don't understand why you would think that, if they litterally just took away the ultra settings from the game, and called what is now high settings ultra settings you wouldn't have complained. Ultra settings is meant for future hardware.

recommended doesnt mean you will get 30 fps on medium ,either it runs better on amd cards but still... the recommended should be at least an rtx 2060, and rx vega 56

I'm running this with 60fps everything on ultra or high (when that is the max setting) shadow on purpose on high because of taxing setting and msaa off. When in the blizzard in the opening sections it dips somewhat but nothing excessive.

Oooof... 1080p with an RTX 2080... I can only imagine how bad it will be for me at 1440p... Ultra seems a bit ridiculous.

What did rockstar with this whole year of waiting? I was expecting gtav lvl of optimization, but instead looks like we most have gtx 2070 and up to get good framerates at 1080p ultra, now just imagine for 4k xD.

The fact that you can't run the game at ultra 1440p doesn't mean it's badly optimised. Ultra settings is mostly meant for future hardware, just use high settings since you probably won't even notice the difference. There is a difference between a demanding and a badly optimised game.

My thoughts exactly. Rockstar really doesn't care about PC gamers. It shows in how late they released this game to us.

Well they (and presumably $ony as well) know that tons of PC gamers will buy it twice if they only delay the PC version long enough. Seeing the high playernumbers in GTA V, I'm pretty sure they care about PC as a platform.

I get 60+ fps, benchmark told me average of 65ish. I have freesync so that's fine with me, game runs very VERY smoothly, not much fps drops. I'm running ultra textures and everything else on high, SSAO is on medium as thats usually very taxing. I'm running it in vulkan but here dx12 runs better so i will try that as well. I'm having a weird issue that makes my game stutter when i press shift/caps/alt/ctrl, but it is VERY smooth. Unoptimized and very demanding isn't the same thing.

It is bad optimised because you can't run it at ultra 60fps? There is a difference between a demanding game and a badly optimised one... Ultra settings are meant for future hardware, just look at crysis 3? That is a greatly optimised game but no hardware available could run it at ultra on release.

The fact that the 1070 can't even do medium 1440p well tells me one of two things:

  1. This game is a horribly unoptimized port

  2. NVIDIA is intentionally making 10xx series cards without RTX perform worse, possibly through the use of the tensor cores for certain settings.

the rtx cards aren't doing so much better, plus the 1070 is around 4 year old card, which is a long time in pc parts, i just hope my 1080 get atleast 10 extra fps across the board

Fair points, but considering the 16xx-20xx series was an overall disappointment in performance aside of the 2080 Ti(which 30% over the 1080 Ti is still meh), there should be no reason the trailering gen shouldn't be performing more. Poor optimization for PC is probably the more likely cause.

If the 1070 is failing, then the developer didn't do their job correctly. Games should be programmed to keep the previous generation of gpus at their previous playpoint.

You're lucky.....considering this totally unoptimized POS requires state of the art (circa. 2022) graphics hardware to run properly. Don't even think about it if you have a multi-monitor setup. What a mess!

It's like Doom3 all over again. They made a game they will continue to get better as new gpus come out.
Wonder how many people on here remember that, built a computer during that time and watched as everyone kept talking about new gpus.
