Rockstar has dropped the first patch for Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC. Update v1.0.9.164 takes aim the various crash to desktop and failure to launch issues which have been plaguing many users.

Issues which are allegedly tackled include the "Rockstar Games Launcher failed to initialize” bug, a broken decryption process, and an error which crashes back to desktop which spits out the message “The Rockstar Games launcher exited unexpectedly”.

I say allegedly because I’ve been stuck with the “Rockstar Games Launcher exited unexpectedly” and I have been unable to play Red Dead Redemption 2 since launch. This patch has done precisely nothing to change that and RDR2 still fails to launch.

Red Dead Redemption 2 PC Patch v1.0.9.164

[November 5, 2019] General / Miscellaneous

  • Fixed an issue that resulted in the Rockstar Games Launcher returning the error "The Rockstar Games Launcher failed to initialize" on startup
  • Fixed an issue that resulted in the Rockstar Games Launcher preload decryption getting stuck and not completing
  • Fixed an issue that resulted in the Rockstar Games Launcher returning the error "The Rockstar Games Launcher exited unexpectedly" when launching Red Dead Redemption 2
  • Fixed an issue that resulted in crashes when starting the Rockstar Games Launcher from the Epic Games Launcher
  • Fixed an issue that resulted in the Rockstar Games Launcher returning the error "Unable to launch game, please verify your game data" when launching Red Dead Redemption 2 from the Epic Games Launcher

For anyone who’s bravely picked up Red Dead 2 early on PC, have you had any luck running the game? Has this patch sorted out any issues for you? Let us know below!

AND here i was thinking i have a good solid system i should now get a 32:9 super ultrawide monitor running at 3840x1080p at 144hz.....I cant even maintain a stable 30fps at 720p in window mode.

That reallyyyyyyyyyyy shouldn't be happening :O maybe try 16:9 ratio 1440p to see if that improves anything for you? my brother's Ultrawide setup is running very well and he only packing an RX480.

Don't mess with the advanced graphic settings. You can delete files in Documents, Rokstas Games, Red Dead Redemption, settings

And this is why I don't mind waiting for it to come to Steam (maybe even later than that). People who just bought it are essentially the beta testers.

No, we are essentially ****ed over with. This is a very botched launch, just to be civil about it. :/

I think it might be issue with the how the game uses the GPU. Because I was playing on all settings manually set to high, and the game would crash would crash every 15-20 miutes. But as soon as I turned down the Graphics to their preset....

Balanced Preset (One before the Favour Quality Preset), the game has stopped crashing for me (played for almost 2-3 hours without crash). Maybe people can try it out and see it if works for them. Hope they resolve this issue quickly though.

Outdoors around 30-37 FPS, and Indoors likes shops and stuff around 40-45 FPS. Can't seem to get more than that.

Haven't updated my GD rig yet but I have a 5700 XT now. I'm getting 90+ fps on high. I was getting 60ish on ultra with low reflections and water physics but it was a bit jittery. Put the game on high and the game still looks just as good. Can't wait to see comparisons between each individual setting. As for launch errors, I haven't encountered errors. I crashed a few times, one hard crash early on, one crash navigating my settings menu, and a few crashes when trying to alt tab. Other than that, the game feels and looks good.

Luckily? You have a rtx 2080 and your 60fps at 1080p seems normal to you? That card takes almost any game at 1440 or even 4k

Some people just underrate their pc to the extent when they don't even care about getting more than 60 fps and that really saddens me. I have gtx 1070 and on ultra even rx 570 is getting better fps than my gpu. How can i stay calm and happy after Nvidia gimping my GPU so hard that it gets worse framerate than rx 570 which is literally not even in same class as gtx 1070...

Yeah just bumped up last year's PS4 review for now, we'll have a breakdown of the PC version shortly. I can't get in on here but it works fine on other systems, Felix is playing it right now

I've played the game for 12hrs and l had zero crashes both before and after the patch. Maybe it's because of drivers, that's why some people experience crashes.

Just goes to show, even a big budget Rockstar production has launch issues, hence me not buying any title for at least 6 months after release...

Changed nothing for me either. Refunded already, as they say, Keep your damn jack! I'll take another look at the Steam release.

Rockstar Support, RDR2, Purchase/activation --> Refunds. Yeah by the time Steam release rolls out they have had a month more to patch it. I also trust the perfomance of the steam launcher more.

Medium to high should fine with me. Why the fu* I need to maxing out every game I own? Medium settings should already being superior than console.

High to max settings different during gameplay should not be that noticable unless you stare at those little jaggies all the time. lol
Max settings is just for art work and photo mode. Except you have a capable system to do so.

yes i agree with you it still looks amazing on medium or high ( with texures at ultra witch seems to make no impact on fps on this game...)

Game has worse optimization since GTA 4. Not look that impressive to my gpu on ultra 1080p goes from 35-45 FPS. Even on High dips to mid 50s. Shame rockstar shame....

Gamers Nexus did a video card review for this game. Oddly the 1080 Ti was getting worse FPS than you would expect from it, placing it just below the RX 5700 XT. Maybe a driver issue?
