Real-time tactics classic Commandos is back. Kalypso Media has announced the formation of an all-new development studio which will be set the goal of developing a “next-generation” Commandos game.
More specifically, the studio will be working on a new strategy game, which means we can breathe a sigh of relief, safe in the knowledge we aren’t getting a sequel to Commandos: Strike Force, an ill-advised move into third-person shooter territory.
Simon Hellwig, managing director and founder of Kalypso Media, was understandably chuffed about the announcement and used this opportunity to complete his marketing jargon bingo card: “The establishment of a new studio is a clear commitment to Kalypso’s growth plans for the coming years as we looked to expand our internal and external development efforts. Commandos is a great, globally-recognized brand and we will do our utmost to meet the expectations of the worldwide gaming community. We can’t wait to get started.” Bingo!
“At the new site we’ll be looking to develop a truly worthy successor to Commandos, designed for both PC and console platforms for simultaneous worldwide release,” says studio director Jürgen Reußwig. “On a personal level, I couldn’t be prouder to be working on a true icon of strategy gaming, and I’m looking forward to receiving applications from new and experienced developers alike that share our passion for the series.”
Recruitment at the studio in Frankfurt, Germany, is now underway, so it looks as if it’s going to be a good while until we heard anything more from the new Commandos project. In the meantime, Commandos 2: HD Remaster is coming to Steam on January 24th. Finally, some action. The isometric artwork always look fantastic but now it’ll benefit from high-definition support and revamped controls.
