12 Games Of Christmas 2019 - Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order v Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Perilously close, is how we'd best described COD: Modern Warfare's battle with Halo: The Master Chief Collection yesterday. Brains is better than beauty, apparently, as the older and wiser head of the titular Master Chief walked out the champion. He may not be the most charismatic sort but he definitely stomped all over Price, one of the most bizarrely beloved characters in shooter history.

The MC has booked a slot in the semi-finals and now the day dawns on a new battle. It's the showdown of the not-quite-Souls-likes as Star Wars: Jedi - Fallen Order goes head to head with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

How the community voting works

Each day at 17:00 GMT two titles will battle each other. Whichever title receives the most votes in the poll wins, and will then go through to the next round. 12 games in total will be battling away, and the first six rounds will take place from today and over the next five days - one battle per day. The six games that win will make it through to the semi-finals, where three further 1v1 fights will take place. The winners of these three battles will then make it to the three-way final to decide the ultimate game this Christmas.

Each bout will last 23 hours, and the winner is whichever game receives the most votes in the poll, which can be found towards the bottom of each article.

Round 1: Fight 3 - Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order v Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

It's time for two of the year's finest action-adventure games to duke it out in a battle to the death. One is probably the finest new Star Wars game in a decade, and typically quality stuff from Respawn, while the other is From Software dipping its toes into the waters of Tenchu once more, delivering a rock-hard samurai game set during Sengoku period Japan.

Accessibility vs focused design; science-fiction vs historical fantasy; power vs powerless - Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice are two very different sides of what is still the same coin, but which is your deserving winner?

Get voting below for your winner, and remember to check back tomorrow for Day Four of the 12 Games of Christmas, where two more titles will battle it out to earn a place in the next round. The winner of today's competition will face the winner of tomorrow's competition in the semi-final on 16th December!

Sekiro lost? I'm genuinely disappointed, but I'm not really surprised. If you feed a person with rotten food for 7 years and then surprise them with just a decent meal they'll think it's out of this world.

Nah, I think the case here is that it's just a decent Star Wars title released in the last 7 years.

Sekiro hands f*cking down. Fallen Order cannot even look at the game. It's diminishing to even have them in the same article because games are in totally different leagues. One is fantastic and the other is just good enough.

Of course. It is an opinion and thus it's subjective.
That said, anyone who voted against Sekiro is just wrong.

Looks to me that they were just gaming journos "trying" to be good at an unforgiving game like Sekiro is.
Meanwhile, Fallen Order was a cakewalk even on GM difficulty and that says a lot. I tried to like this 20 hour 1st playthrough game and ended wanting more and with Sekiro i just had fun, testing new abilities more hours that i've put in J:FO.
It's not a bad game, it just isn't up to par.

I don't think anyone said it was? I voted Sekiro, by the way, I just don't think beating it is a superhuman achievement. I've written already that I think SWJ is an average game (did an Up For Debate on it) but I don't think the difficulty is particularly central to that. The majority seem to disagree with us though, as the poll says!

I voted for sekiro too, but not just because it's difficult or unforgiving. Fromsoftware does an incredible job at worldbuilding in terms of story/lore for their games, and that generally sells me out on a game. Apart from A Plague Tale Innocence, Sekiro is one of the very few games that I enjoyed last year in terms of gameplay mechanics, gorgeous visuals and story all at the same time.

This one is bit though call, in one way Sekiro deserves its praise and developers really did great game for gamers, especially fans of hard difficulty. But on the other side, not being that big into hard games, I personally would prefer Fallen Order, though that would mean vote for EA and in technically, all they did was minimum one should expect from them, which is to just make game for gamers.

From Software games are not only about the difficulty, if anything they are NOT difficult, they just have a really nice and satisfying learning curve. It's really sad when people only associate their games with difficulty, because that's not what they are really about.

To be honest, I just say hard due to lack of better word for it. Plus most reporting around them being centered around difficulty doesn't help either. Anyway, it probably goes well with reasons I am not playing them, at least not much, hence I maybe don't really have more fitting explanation. But anyway, of course there is more to them than difficulty, they do few stuff in unique way.

It is true that that's what got their games popular to begin with, but it's just not cool that many people think that that's all their games are about, and again, I wouldn't say they are difficult, because once you learn them, they are easy, something trully difficult would be always difficult no matter what.

Once you learn something it gets easier? Unbelievable! If you dedicate yourself to something, anything, it'll eventually get easier to do. The only way for something to be difficult "no matter what" is to not try it or give up.

It does. If somethin is hard, even if you learn it, master it, be as good as humanly possible and it does get somewhat easier, but it's still super hard then it's truly hard.
Once you learn how to play a soulsborne game or sekiro or nioh or whatever, you can go without even being hit and you know their movesets so you can easily dodge and kill them.
People go without getting hit a single time in those games. If they were mega hard that'd be impossible, even if it's artificial difficulty and guaranteed hits.

Technically there has not been a new idea in centuries. It's not about being original, it's about good execution. Soulsborne technically stem from the 3D Ninja Gaiden games in terms of many game designs/phylosiphies.

And in general, the inventors get a headstart, but the ones that execute it the best always win.

That said, Sekiro imo is a tiny bit better gameplay-wise and enemy-wise, so I pick Sekiro too.

No truly original idea has been had in centuries, everything is based off of something prior to it and do differentiate discovery from an idea.

For an idea to be truly original it has to not be based on any other already existing one, that hasn't happened in centuries, if anything even millenniums.

This is why no one really likes philosophists. Even though what you say is "technically" true, it still sounds really stupid. It's a shortcut to sounding obnoxiously smart by stating the obvious in an ambiguous way, yet all they do is annoy

Well first of all, it's even mathematically true, what I said, so IDK by what other standard I should go to. Logic, math, what else should I use?

And please just get this idea of smart and stupid out of your head. A smart/normal person is a person with no brain damage, a stupid/disabled person is a person with brain damage. From there on it's just information and connecting the dots(making assciations with known/given information), knowing a lot of information doesn't make smart and not knowing information doesn't make one stupid. People with more informations can make more associations to solve more problems, but that doesn't make them smarter either, just better problem solvers.

And I'm not a philospher, at least I don't think of myself as one, to be honest IDK the defintion. XD

22:26 Dec-12-2019

A person with brain damage is mentally ill, not stupid, what you said is just plain insulting to be honest.
What makes a person stupid is simply shortsightedness and ignorance, and often a massive ego.

I didn't say you're wrong though. I just said that you really love sounding smart and "woke", and all you managed to do is just be an annoying person.

Again, I don't care what people think of me, I don't care if I'm "smart" or "stupid". Matters not to me. Like how do you even assume that about me? I curse all the time, I'm constantly pissing people off, even though with good reason. It's just something you got in your head and won't let it go I guess... I give 0 sh!ts what people think about me, and it doesn't matter if stupid or smart exist all it matters is the information one says.

And it's true, intelligence isn't measured by knowledge or associations made by said knowledge, or how good you do in school or how good you are at problem solving, those are all Skills that anyone can acquire as long as that person has no brain damage or any other mental disease AND wants to aquire them, a person can't learn without being willing to.

Well then if the person cares who is saying the information, then that person doesn't care much to begin with. Information is searched as such.

Someone tells you the information on the subject, you check different sources, if the different sources agree, then that's the information, if they disagree, then you want proof, while showing other sources. If there are no other sources, you take the information given and logic behind it, then you can assess it and based on your current existing information if you have counter-information/arguments you go with them, if you don't that becomes your information on the subject, then you proceed to test it if you can, if you can't, it ends there, but you keep on searching until you can test it or find other sources that agree.

When a person that's not trustworthy gives you a certain information, it is very likely you won't trust them. If that certain person is unable to admit they're wrong, when you prove them wrong, then you definitely won't trust them.

You have shown time and time again that you're not a trustworthy source of information. Couple that with you not caring how you conduct yourself makes you even less accessible.

"Success is what you make it son" and then you die... that's the first step to actually having success, not dying and more importantly, not getting old while not dying.
And I have admitted I'm wrong multiple times when I have been.

And again that is a big problem, caring about the person at all, and not ONLY the information. Because that means you will trust world renown "genius" experts that lie in favour of the companies that hire them or in general in favour of those paying them.

There was this fake study that said that chocolate made you lose weight and people bought it because it was done by a "trusted source", by a well known "expert" and then the guy went out and said that he lied, because he wanted to prove how people don't care about the information, but who is saying it.

No what I said, put simply is: screw the human saying it, care only about the information.
Then try out/test the information or seek other sources to confirm it, if you can't test it find other sources, then use the knowledge you have and logic to see if it makes sense, if that fails too, then that is the information you have on the subject, from there on out, you try and repeat step and one two until successfuly determining if it's true or not.
