Microsoft has announced a small delay for Moon Studios’ Ori and the Will of the Wisps, confirming the gorgeous Metroidvania platform adventure will now be coming to Xbox platforms on March 11th, 2020. It’s only a month-long delay from its original February 11th target, although following the delay of The Last Of Us: Part II is does leave February looking depressingly slim.

I don’t know whether it’s sheer coincidence or not but it now means Ori and the Will of the Wisps will launch five years to the day since Ori and the Blind Forest hit Xbox One on March 11th, 2015. Five years is a heck of a long time to dedicate to a 2D Metroidvania so there really is an expectation of extreme quality here, particularly when taking into account how utterly fantastic the original was.

But, it’s not all paperwork. Microsoft also shared a brand spanking new trailer for Ori and the Will of the Wisps during The Game Awards 2019. The artwork is still looking absolutely unparalleled and there are plenty of new skills, tricks, and screen-filling bosses which should hopefully ensure a fresh feeling sequel. That soundtrack is still an all-timer as well.

Moon Studios has also promised a more varied world which breaks free of the original’s forest, as well as a checkpoint save system, side quests, and new movement upgrades such as the ability to pull out branches as seen in the trailer.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps is out on March 11th, 2020, for PC (Windows Store and Steam) and Xbox One. It’ll be coming to Xbox Game Pass as well, naturally, so it should be cheap as chips to play.

The original was a masterpiece. I have very high hopes for this. Even if it doesn't live up to the original (that's a tall order), I have no doubt it will still be an absolutely fantastic game.
