I’m sure you’re sick of it now, hearing about the coronavirus, I mean it’s everywhere, and it seems to be spreading across the media faster than it spreads across the population. Nevertheless, it is still an important topic because it is now starting to affect more than just our daily lives: our economies.
By now most of you will probably know about staff and employees being sent home from work in order to self-isolate themselves and prevent the spread of the virus. However this obviously has drawbacks in terms of how people will work when they don’t have access to their office or tools. We’ve seen these negative effects already in the stock market.
But now we have a rare opportunity where most of the world will experience what it’s like to work from home. We live in a digital society and most jobs could just as easily be done at home than in an office. Many games companies are sending their developers home to work, and yet they’re still able to do their jobs.
Hell, with everybody staying at home now, will we see a surge in the games industry? If I had to self-isolate, I would definitely think about picking up a new game to keep me company over the week. I wouldn’t be surprised if video games sales sky rocket over the next month or so.
Or maybe everyone will be too sick to play games? And maybe developers will slow down on their work because they can’t meet each other face-to-face, or interact with technology back at the office that will help them progress. Maybe sending the developers home will hinder their performance and we’ll actually see a negative impact on the industry?
Either way, the coronavirus sure has disrupted our already established system, the question is whether or not it’s good or bad for the games industry as a whole.
What do you think? Will we see a positive impact on the games industry? And a surge in games sales? Or will we see a negative impact? And less games sales? Let us know your thoughts!

i don't know about the future but i do know that for the first time, an organic threat has infected a logical system.

Having more time to play doesn't necessarily mean buying more games. And there's an offset from lower incomes.
Its only good on a relative basis. Oil, airline, hospitality industries are cratering.

Seeing that any industry needs a human workforce, no.
PC Specs
don't worry, most automized industries don't really need. And programmers work from home, so no problem there and guess what, games require programmers. XD
Artists work from home too.

"Is the zombie apocalypse good for lowering our carbon footprint?"... i mean that´s technically correct but is it good?

Yes
PC Specs
Let's be clear in that if this question is being asked, then no it is not good for gaming or any industry.
Nothing that brings about sickness, panic and loss of life is worth anything to gaming and gamers. Been gaming 3 decades and I am just getting started.

Oh my good god.

Who thought this article was a good idea? Jesus CHRIST.

Also
Is it? That's the first question that springs to mind? Really? Not "how can we support game developers during this time of crisis?"? Not "how can games allow us to mitigate a depressing situation and unite in solidarity?"?
PC Specs
Not "how can we support victims, each other, and get through this with the help of shared media?"?
It's… "is this good for the games economy?"
I despair.
PC Specs
I can't help picturing the author of this going back in time to World War 2 and telling people "I know you're all sick of hearing about the war, but trust me guys it's all worth it, there are gonna be some fantastic video games about this in 60 years"
PC Specs
agreed, it is a bit insensitive to write articles about how good coronavirus is while people are dying ...
PC Specs
Is far more complex than the question, if we are talking about sales than yes and no, the digital sales yes are incresing, while the "solid" copies are dropping by 30 %. As for the development of future games than there will be delays, so to wrap, in the short term yes in the long term no.
PC Specs
no.
PC Specs
Basically, no!! Many events canceled, delays because they have to work at home or even stop entirely. This is awfull for all the indutries.
PC Specs
Ahhh no. Just no. Why is this even a thing?
PC Specs
well incress in gaming activity but for a short time as even gamers have to eat and there are supply shortage and even if there were food to be bought you may wont have money to do so as a lot of them might lose theyr job thanks to all thos companys going broke

How is a virus that has killed over 5000 people good for anything?

Almost 6000 now.
PC Specs
We are overpopulated, so there is always that positive to all disasters.
PC Specs
what a horrible mindset to have
PC Specs
perhaps, but if we were 250-300million instead of almost 8 billion, resources, nature and all the other things people about left and right wouldn't be aproblem, hell we'd be driving tanks and all would be fine. XD
PC Specs
Now that said, nobody wants to die, nobody wants to have their family and friend die, which is why I propose for limited birth per family, 1 child max per couple for the next 4 generations and everything will be fixed.
But when things such as this happen, this is the only positive, as cynical as it is.
Also you have to realize that more people were killed in the same just by the flu or common cold(or whatever the actual name is in english).
PC Specs
Corona is scary not because people die from it, but because it's spreads too fast and easily. Death isn't the worst thing after all. If 50% of the population catches Corona and as so sick they can't get out of bed for weeks or even up to months, the whole world dies either way.
PC Specs
Kid, sometimes it's just smarter to keep your stupid mouth shut. Please use your brain for gods sake, that's why you have it.
PC Specs
Oh, sensetive are we? Chill dude, death is natural, and thousands of people die everyday due to all sorts of different reasons. Why can't people handle death better? Or the fact that if we don't want to be screwed or even die out, we need to reduce our population.
PC Specs
ahh the truly ignorant, prime example of primitive humans just like flat earthers, you think population is the problem? and your scientific reasoning? and what credentials do you have to support such claims? population is not a problem, its economics, rather simple if you research instead of using your feelings.
PC Specs
perhaps this simple analogy can help you understand: If you only have ONE bathroom but TEN people who must use that bathroom, what do you do? truly ignorant and primitive people say this "well just kill NINE people simple" facepalm no just make more bathrooms but guess what? no one wants to spend the money
PC Specs
considering how much money the top 1% make imagine the economics, imagine if world governments actually cared about the world, imagine if politics wasnt a complete joke, imagine if the oil companies started to invest in clean energy, automotive companies, big pharma etc we have the means.
PC Specs
I entirely agree but in this case I'd say the analogy would be more accurate if 1 of the people owned 10 bathrooms but 9 owned 1. Do you kill the 8 people that can't use that 1 bathroom? No you share the goddamned bathrooms :P

we have the means to make the world a better place and scientific studies show that when women are educated, the countries benefit but look how many countries dont have that level of education for women. Education leads to families being more efficient.
PC Specs
But I never said to kill people. I said to reduce the birth rate to one child per couple for about 4 generations. Very interesting. I can't help but wonder if you just read my first comment and stopped there.
The most current concesus is that 1.5-2.0 billion people is the Maximum sustainable population on earth and we should aim for about 1/5th to 1/4th of that, so we don't border the maximum or even come close to it, especially when we've oversaturated earth for a century at this point.
PC Specs
faith in authority? lol no its called not taking the word of a random person on the internet but you go ahead and believe random people of the internet if you want lol and your studies prove you are wrong haha we are not yet at 10 billion worldwide and we are expecting to hit 10 billion in 2100 soooooo
PC Specs
nope, 10 billion is the maximum before we are screwed, that's the absolute maximum, NOT the sustainable maximum.
A sustainable population is a population that can't use all the resources of the planet before the planet creates new ones.
PC Specs
Also I had not researched it before now, but it turns out that through simple logic I was right. If resources are running out faster than they are recovering, then we are obviously overpopulated. If we weren't overpopulated, then oil wouldn't run out, coal wouldn't run out, we wouldn't be damaging the biosphere of the planet faster than it could recover, we wouldn't be speeding the Natural global warming of the earth on so on.
PC Specs
And if we aren't overpopulated why have so many countries have already put a birth control system/law in place? I mean besides the obvious China, India and Indonesia which at this point have a one child per couple programs or even laws, not sure about the details. I think it was Hungary(I could be entirely wrong, I've forgoten which one) that gave you money if you had a second child, but would tax you the same or more than they gave you for the second child and more.
The USA's population spread is horenedous too, literally the East and West coast have 75%(not an actual accruate percentage figure) of the population and then Texas has a big portion of what's left and the middle states are basically empty in comparison.
PC Specs
China removed their 1 child policy... do you know why? because in chinese culture males are more valued then females which meant that people would have home births, if it was a girl they would kill the child and try again.... which in turn have but them in a situation where they now have too many males compared to females in the country... Restricting how many children people can have will NEVER! end well
PC Specs
Well they screwed up... This discrimination towards different sexes is just stupid... Most likely born from a man, that would make good fairy tails, that people of the time were foold by and believed and then on top of that men being bigger and stronger than women on average and the fact that women gave birth, really put them in a terrible position... Just annoying as control freaks turning everything to crap as usual... first this, then enforced laws... then conformism, then manipulating people to have similar or the exact same way of thinking and believes... -_-
PC Specs
And as long as capitalism reigns we will never have good economy for the majority of the population. We need a brand new system.
PC Specs
@TheJusticeHobbit
China removed 1 child policy because they lacked working class young people to fill in the gaps of the retiring population. They're not f*cking monsters for gods sake, have some sense.
PC Specs
@StevenPlebster look up "Female infanticide in China"
PC Specs
i did read your comments and your whole skit is overpopulation and we need to reduce our population but according to the data that you provided me, earth can support 10 billion people and we are expecting to hit that number in 2100 haha so you proved yourself wrong
PC Specs
but we havent hit 10 billion yet so once again we are not screwed yet lol we got almost a century to turns things around
PC Specs
and data constantly changes so who knows what 10 years will bring and yes i agree we need a brand new system but saying "overpopulation" is the problem feels like one big cop out. Yes mother nature kills lifeforms thats natural, might as well let mother nature do her thing
PC Specs
and humans are apart of mother nature so whos to say that our eventual demise is not already preordained by nature herself? maybe this is the way of all lifeforms who develop into the industrial age.
PC Specs
Again the earth can support 10 billion people absolute MAXIMUM. A sustainable population is a population that consumes Earth's resources slower than they recover. If you read carefully they are saying that the Maximum SUSTAINABLE population is 1.5-2 billion, and since we've oversaturated Earth for a century, we should have about 20-25% of that, so 300-500 million people to have the perfect sustainable population and compensate for all the oversaturation.
PC Specs
Oh we will go extinct one way or another, don't worry, eternity isn't forever.
PC Specs
and after the collapse humans will still survive and thrive in a new environment. Extinction events happen on their own maybe humans are the extinction event created by mother nature
PC Specs
Pretty sure they assume those figures based on current levels and behaviours of consumption. If we changed our institutions and how we consume things we could definitely sustain the current population level. And pop growth inevitably declines with increased education, women's rights, and availability of contraception.
Out of curiosity what system do you envision?
PC Specs
well at least not forever in our universe.
PC Specs
Sadly all the systems I've come up with are way too idealistic for humans to follow without breaking them all the time.
I've thought of many though. Reward-based on personal productivity, so that you can't have some person that gets rich and then buys investments left and right and just sits at home while they pile him money, but then they'd just pay people to do their work for a cut of the money at the very, very least. And many other exploits. Plus measuring productivity is hard.
Then there is the idea of a cap of money that a person can own monthly and overall. For example 5000$ max per month and overall. This encourages spending and doesn't allow money to make more money for someone and have that snowball effect.
PC Specs
Or a system without currency, people just study and learn the skill they'll be doing and they work at 100% and the productivity disparity is no more than 25%, and everyone gets everything(for that we need a lower population too), but humans won't ever choose the hard and honest and efficient way, they want to be lazy. Otherwise, we are in an overproduction state and have been even after the great depression in the USA. We choose to ignore it, cuz out economy is make-believe after all. Cuz there are more PCs than people on earth, more toilets, more tables, more air-conditioners, more of pretty much everything.
PC Specs
Then I've had the idea of a regulated economy, where people are chosen to fill all the necessary positions(after being thought about the skill and knowledge they will have to apply), but then you need someone to govern that system and we know how people who govern are... perfect idea for an a strategy video game, but people sadly aren't computers when it comes to economy.
Also we should remove 95-99% of roads within cities, but that's another thing to cover, some other time.
PC Specs
See? thats what we need, ideas, communication, discussion rather then "overpopulation is a problem" that doesnt solve anything. Like chickichocka pointed out population growth declines with increased education, womens right, access to contraception and that needs to be solved on a country to country basis.
PC Specs
sure all of that is gonna be hard but saying its never gonna happen and "humans wont ever choose the hard, honest efficient way" is another cop out, people work damn hard in third world countries for example and in general but the problem is there are too many distractions and a lack of guidance.
PC Specs
and a general sense of no hope that people have is another problem, people see the world for what it is rather than what it could be, poor people, homeless people, people are living damn hard lives, how can you expect them to work with efficiency when their lives are not optimal
PC Specs
Oh as I said and prooved, overpopulation is a problem, just one of many. So I shall repeat myself for the third time. As you, yourself said 10 billion is the maximum, but that's the absolute maximum before pople start dying off. A Maximum sustainable population is 1.5-2.0 billion. Sustainable as in we use up resources slower than they recover, recreate, regenerate
And we don't want to border on that maximum of the Sustainable population, plus the about 100 years of oversaturation of the Earth's resources, we should be 300-500 million people. It's not an opinion, it's math. Not that I mind if we are overpopulated, but I'm going with the objectiveness to have... you know people survive until something destroys the earth or the Natural global warming gets us or some other desiese or disaster
PC Specs
I expect them to work efficiently by not giving a crap about materialistic stuff that is non-essential. If you have clothes, food, water, heating, shelter, bed and a bathroom that should make you fully satisfied on materialistic needs. From there on, it's just hobbies and bonuses. Problem is people look at toys(cars, smartphones, computers, jewelry, expensive watches, houses, apartments and mansions, trips, vacations, etc, etc, insert next popular thing to desire) like they are a must-have/own thing essential to life, when it isn't.
Ok, a car or a form of transportation in certain cases is needed, but that's when it's a need and you don't need it to be "luxurious" and fast and all that, it just needs to get you from point A to point B.
PC Specs
And don't get me wrong, I love toys, but I wouldn't say my life is bad if I didn't have any toys, not at all. To be honest, I care more about having fun with people.
PC Specs
And don't get me to talk about this bullcrap, imaginary, stupid idea of "status", as stupid as it sounds I only recently(2 years ago) learnt that people actually care about that crap... I thought we lived in the 21st century, not the 18th and prior... -_-
That idea should be abolished, it's imaginary and stupid.
PC Specs
"i expect them to work efficiently by not giving a crap about materialistic stuff that is non-essential" easy for you to say when you have access to the internet, most people dont even have access to essential goods let alone "toys". What about worldwide homelessness? there are homeless veterans in America for gods sak
PC Specs
overpopulation in the broadest sense is always a problem but mother nature finds a way to deal with that but determining overpopulation is the problem. We could be far more efficient with resources and thus change the numbers on what overpopulation means
PC Specs
i'm not sure what you mean by "status"? like back in the day noble households or something? like someone has a higher status than someone else?
PC Specs
Sorry, but there is just no way we can solve overpopulation by being efficient. Even in a perfectly efficient world, where all the energy is produced by nuclear plants, people live in 100 story apartment buildings, people eat bugs(yes that's the most efficient diet, not vegetables, fruits and whatever else), cars consume very little fuel or are all-electric, the population cap won't increase much. We will still use tons of metals, polymers(oil), minerals and such.
PC Specs
And yeah back in the day that was the status in society, nowadays it's with those low-middle class, high-middle class, low-rich class, high-rich class, real rich and then there are even the little things, like fashion and such crap, going to vacations, etc, etc... I thought only a tiny portion of people were this pretentious, but nope, they care about those things just because of saying they did it or that they are, or take pride and think they've succeeded just because they bought a coveted toy, still my comprehension isn't that good on it, but yeah. Basically people care what other people think about them way too much...
PC Specs
And we could easily solve the problem with underdeveloped countries, but then the economies of the big countries that exploit them will drop like hell. So they bury them with free food, free clothes and shoes, free everything, to tank their economies even further and exploit them even more... -_-
What they need is MONEY. Give them a a couple of billion euro and then go and make sure to make their economies grow as much as possible, but nope. Countries wouldn't sacrifice their own economy and living standards for other countries. So yeah.
PC Specs
Also, homelessness is brought by our current economic system, and the mindest of people, basically the culture. It's the same with criminals, jails are bad for them, they don't do anything for them, except make them more dangerous, angry and let them learn new skills for breaking the laws, jails are crap and yet we use them, because apparently we never got out of the medieval period.
PC Specs
Oh I am sensitive, but not to death though. That's natural. I'm sensitive to idiocy, ignorance and people who know sh*t about nothing but think they have answers and solutions to everything. But maybe idiots are natural too.
PC Specs
You need to have some very special deficit to think that genocide is a solution to world's problems. You always surprise me with your moronic statements, I'll say that much.
PC Specs
How can you be so detached? I refuse to believe you are not doing this on purpose. With any single question you always take the most extreme opposite side and that's just too much not to be seen as doing it on purpose.
PC Specs
And when did I propose genocide?
Oh I always prefer to take a detached point of view when it comes to this, I don't consider myself or any individual, I just look at the big picture.
PC Specs
Again you don't read all my comments. I advocated for controlled birth rate for at least 4 generations, for couples to have only 1 child maximum, so we reduce the population naturally.
PC Specs
You're right. You didn't propose genocide, you just endorsed potential mass death due to a highly contagious virus. Totally a different thing. Good thing to take advice from someone who admits he doesn't care about individuals.
PC Specs
You should use that as your platform when you're running for a president.
PC Specs
I didn't propose it, I said that it had one positivity, because we are overpopulated, but once we are not overpopulated, they would be no positive to any disiese or disaster.
And not that anything, but being a President, Leader, Dictator, Premier, King, or whatever is a game of Macro-management, NOT Micro-management, there are way too many people to Micro-manage. Again overpopulated. XD
Sure back in the day when castle cities were a thing and the population was usually about 50-100k witin one of those sure, but now just the capital of my small ****ty country has 3 million people in it, so how do you Micro-manage 3 million people? You don't. You Macro-manage them.
PC Specs
Why do I even bother trying to reason with a 19 year old kid. You'll grow out of this phase eventually and we can both laugh at what you used to say.
PC Specs
all again say that the world is full with polluted air (google translate) from factories and industries to cars and rivers and people are wondering why there are some things happening. Millions of people are dying from hunger, sickness (and because only 1 virus is spreading fast all panics). The peoples who dies in the background are the persons who suffer the most from all of us.
PC Specs
When you are watching a concert or a game tournament do you care about the work behind the scene's and the camera man's or you care what you see in front? I guess not. Which is casual. SAme with people dying. Because they're not famous or dying from common things some people don't care about that them and its normal. (WHICH SHOULDNT HAPPEN AT ALL), but with todays society people with moneyhavefood
PC Specs
You're right, we should stop trying to contain the virus an let it sweep the globe. Sick and hungry have compromised immune systems so they'll be the first to die and all the worlds problems will be immediately solved!
PC Specs
Do you remember kobe's death? Everyone moarn his death, but there are millions other who dies and because his famous all cares. But if some of our families dies either frm sickness, hunger or else nobody cares it cares only the people who are close to him. We don't care about the millions who die frm casual sickness, but when a virus spreads then we care.

Quarantine situation has two sides, pros and cons, like everything else does. I don't think that the corona virus is good for anything. In the short term we may see more gaming activity (that what happens when people get free time) but long term it will probably have some really bad effects like delays on games and maybe even the next gen systems at this point.

Short term we might see an increase in game activity around the globe. At least that's what i think will happen.
