Up For Debate - Are Sony PlayStation exclusives coming to PC a good thing?

We all love video games and it’s great when a new game comes out that gets us excited, but platform exclusive titles suck. No matter what way you swing it, games that are exclusive to a specific platform means some people will end up not being able to play the games they want. Thankfully, Sony is bringing more first party PlayStation exclusives to the PC platform, but is that really a good thing?

There’s a lot of ways you can look at it, so let’s first start off with the negatives. Days Gone is the next PlayStation exclusive to make its way to PC, shortly after Horizon: Zero Dawn was also released on the PC platform last year and despite the rocky launch, still proved successful commercially and critically.

But the problem is that Sony announced Horizon Forbidden West, the sequel to HZD, shortly before the first came to PC. It took over 3 years for the first game to come to PC, and after getting some PC players hooked on the first game, Sony has yet to reveal whether the sequel will also come to PC as well.

Platform exclusive games are generally done in order to drive sales of that platform. PlayStation exclusives drive players to purchase PlayStation consoles. Nintendo Switch exclusives drive players to buy Nintendo Switch consoles and so on…

So maybe Sony’s plan is to release last-gen PlayStation games on PC, and just as players get hooked, announce sequels to those games that are exclusive to PlayStation 5, enticing more PC players to buy a PS5.

It’s a win-win scenario for Sony, but only a half-win for PC players. In the end we still get the short end of the stick despite more previously-console exclusive titles coming to PC.

Then again, HZD is the only game to come from PlayStation to PC and get a sequel announcement around launch, so it's not like we’re working with a large pool of statistics here. There’s a good chance that Days Gone will get a sequel as PlayStation fans have been asking since release, and if Sony announces Days Gone 2 after the first one launches on PC, well that only furthers their track record.

Judging by how many PC players want the God of War series on PC over anything else, and God of War: Ragnarok was recently announced, connect the dots and you have a lot of people eager to get the sequel on a platform they haven’t bought… not yet at least.

What do you think? Are Sony PlayStation exclusives coming to PC a good thing? Is Sony just trying to persuade more gamers to buy the PlayStation 5 console by baiting them with PC ports? And do you think the sequels will eventually come to PC as well? Let’s debate!

Are Sony PlayStation exclusives coming to PC a good thing?

Do you think these sequels will come to PC after they launch on console?

Would you buy a PlayStation 5 to play the sequels?

I have never really liked the idea of exclusive games.

Sure they help Sony shift consoles, but I prefer what Microsoft is doing. Here's a new console buy it or don't as long as you play our games somewhere we don't care.

I would like to see more Sony exclusives on PC

More games coming to PC is always a good thing. Even if we have to wait a while for the PC release it's worth the wait.

I'd be tempted by the new Horizon to get a PS5, just because I loved the original on PS4, and even more on PC not having to aim with a bloody controller. I'll 100% get it when the next console Monster Hunter releases, but until then, I'll enjoy Rise.

They should port everything except for TLOU and uncharted those games are boring and we have better games about the same thing already. Spiderman and GOW should definitely be ported tho.

Its not an issue if the exclusives are from previous (ps4) generation. And i think not all of them will be on PC specially uncharted/last of us and bloodborne.

More Gamers enjoying a game is always a good thing , I just need Bloodborne on PC it's the only game preventing me from selling my PS4.

Imo i think the whole ,,exclusive'' deal is crap. Simply because they are gonna release that game for pc later down the line either way to make even more money out of it. They have to putt together a team to port it to pc thus making their number of people working on a next title smaller which makes no sense. They might as well take some more time to port those games to pc and then release that game for all platforms, after that all of their manpower/employes would be available to work on the next game, most likely resulting in no delays whatsoever.

I have no problem with console exclusives if they are released on PC 3 years after console release. If the exclusives are that great they will be worth playing years from now and worth the wait. As far as Sony is concerned expanding it's games to PC makes financial sense for both dev costs & as a small way to help supplement shrinking hardware revenue across the company.

PS games were something I never cared about because I know I can't play them, buying console just doesn't make sense to me. I do a lot more on PC than play games, so there will always be a PC. But now, I have more games to enjoy.

I think porting PS4 games to PC is great thing to happen. Despite it likely being used to sell us PS5 with sequels, since they will likely keep sequels PS5 exclusive till PS6. But still, I will take it. As for PS5, I actually would buy it to play sequels, provided they are good and of course depending on the game. Though getting one is another big problem.

If all Sony exclusives came to PC on release, I would probably have zero reasons to own a console. It would be a pity since I have always had a soft spot for Playstation consoles having played the first one since I was a kid to the PS5 which I currently own. Maybe Sony should just expand and focus on their studios and make top quality triple A games for all platforms. Become a juggernaut producer for games and do it the right way unlike EA/Ubisoft.

Is this even a question? More games for more players is always a good thing.

the only reason they are doing this is because of what MS has been doing lately. If MS didnt force their, hand they wouldnt be doing this. Its the same thing with backwards compatibility. Sony has a track record of dropping support for it and dropping support for Other OS. MS has been making money adding older titles into their catalog.

If MS made all of Gamepass pc compatible, Sony would be scrambling to match them. As of now, PS5 backward compatible is garbage at best, and their only hope is allowing their system exclusives onto pc.

I doubt it's because of what MS are doing. It's far more to do with the $$$ they made from releasing a 3 year old game on pc and realising that they can sell old product to a new market for huge profits. Far more than what they make from the PSNow streaming catalog on PC. Those profits can then be used towards developing new PS5 games that can then be released again in 3 years on PC after console.

Exclusives are a bad thing for everyone. PlayStation games coming to PC is a good thing but they shouldn't take that long to come to PC and if they do, they should at least announce they're working on a PC port.

I hope that they also work on cross-platform play, I want to be able to play with some of my friends who are on PS4.

exclusives are only bad for the short-sighted. competition is what makes it better for consumers and having exclusives is a way to highlight an advantage over the competition. the only reason people are complaining is that they want them on pc. no one is clambering for them on Xbox. again, shortsightedness.

Yeah, I don't understand their mentality. I have literally zero incentive and reason to buy a console just because a game hasn't released yet on PC, or if it will even release at all. Caving in to their tactic feels just the same like paying scalper prices for PC hardware. And the consoles have never been a true competition, not without these exclusives. Thake this away and what are they? Nothing.
