Up For Debate - How often do you encounter cheaters in multiplayer games?

Cheaters suck, and unfortunately when it comes to online multiplayer games, there is bound to at least be one. Some companies have come up with clever ways to deal with cheaters, whilst others have a zero tolerance ban on cheaters. Either way, we want to know exactly how often do you encounter cheaters in multiplayer games?

With EA Play now available on Game Pass for PC, I decided to finally give Battlefield V a proper chance. I had played it once during a free weekend but couldn’t get the hang of it and never picked it up afterwards. But now I can play at my leisure and I’m having a really good time.

So after about 20 hours of playing, I suddenly get dropped into a lobby where our team is just getting battered. I mean properly slaughtered. I run up to a piece of cover, spot some guy in the window, aim my sights over him, fire, and then die instantaneously.

At first I thought this was just my terrible reflexes or a hitch in my internet connection, but after playing for a while I realised this player was invincible and was just mowing down my entire team. Then after a while I discovered he was not only invincible, but he was teleporting around the map, snapping his aim onto enemies instantly, killing them with one shot from an infinite magazine.

It’s fair to say that we didn’t win that fight.

But despite being a fairly old game (at least old by Battlefield standards) I was surprised to see that it was the only cheater I had seemingly encountered. By my memory I had not encountered a cheater before (at least to my knowledge) in any Battlefield game ever, granted I never really played as much of it as I did Call of Duty (I know, I’m disgusted too).

That got me thinking though: with all the rampant allegations of cheaters in Call of Duty Warzone, and any other competitive multiplayer game, I wanted to see how often the average player has actually ever encountered a cheater in an online game, and how much it ruined the experience.

Nobody likes a cheater of course, that’s why People Can Fly have taken it pretty seriously and implemented a very unique way of dealing with cheaters in Outriders. But what other ways could developers prevent and punish cheaters?

Sometimes it’s just a kid trying to have some fun, and as much as cheaters suck the joy out of playing a game, sometimes these people make a mistake and they have the right to learn from their mistakes and never do it again. Growing from failure is much more important than outright banning someone, and cheaters generally pop right back up with a new account and fresh game key to start all over again. So what can be done?

What do you think? How often do you encounter cheaters in multiplayer games? How much do cheaters affect your gameplay/enjoyment in a game? And what else can be done to prevent cheaters in multiplayer games? Let’s debate!

Leaving the jokes aside the biggest amount of blatant cheaters I've seen is in RDR2 Online. The amount of enemies with no damage taken, teleports with the other non-cheating players up at a high level on the map and letting us fall and die, time changing, one shot headshots from any distance with weak guns, random exploding is ridiculous. Some of this happened in GTAO as well, but maybe less to me.

That's why I like PvE games. For example Warframe you csn play through all content solo with proper builds, and even with matched with random matched ppl u couldn't tell if someones cheating since proper builds'll kill enemies instantly.

Just about any MMORPG. There are Cheaters! Especially for those who are STREAM SNIPPING! Shooting or Survival Games are the Very Worst. Especially if you're gonna encounter TOXIC PLAYERS.

use to be a daily occurrence back when I was still playing free multiplayer
last day of playing Crossfire, I was the only non-cheating/non-hacking in the entire 16 people map
walk out in the middle of the goddamn map, alone and got headshot
don't have this problem any more, since buying games with friends

Hardly any in Apex as far as i could tell over the last couple years, though maybe it's just that I didn't know. Last couple weeks, however, encountered a few obvious ones.

Lol what Apex are you playing? Almost every pro player and content creator has quit Apex ranked due to cheaters.

They likely don't spend much time below platinum, which is as high as I've gotten. Have noticed it more recently, though.

A few times a week, but you never know if someone's a closet cheater unfortunately.

I don't play much multiplayer, so I guess I don't encounter a lot. Though one game I used to return occasionally, Team Fortress 2 got overrun by them. So I kind of stopped playing. Not sure if Valve ever got to fixing the issue, but it got pretty terrible with bots copying names, so you didn't even know who to kick, plus they would just join again, copy your name, your kick vote was on cooldown,...

... so now teammates had to guess choose who to votekick, because bot had your name and both you and bot looked the same on player list. But from other games, I used to play World of Warcraft and I can't say I saw cheaters there. But beyond that I mostly stuck to singleplayer games.

I no longer play multiplayer games (at least regularly) so no more cheaters for me But i played a lot of csgo and cheaters was one of the factors why i quit playing it...

Depends on the game, but for eg.: R6 was so plagued by them that it wasn't fun anymore as the game became unplayable at that point so I had ti quit it even tho I was good at it. In Apex Legends you might encounter one or two, but there are not many of them out there, sometimes it just seems like the enemy is cheating

Alot, I've kinda left multiplayer aside now it's just mentally taxing to put in time and then to get clapped by a cheater. I have found my zen in single player games. I go to multiplayer just once in a while but i mainly stick to sp games.
