Capcom’s beloved Resident Evil franchise first debuted in 1996, and since then countless sequels and spin-offs have been created and released within the RE universe. Depending on who you ask, you could get a completely different answer to the question: what is your favorite Resident Evil game?
So we wanted to ask you guys just that, in celebration of the recent release of Resident Evil 8 last Friday and the overwhelming critical acclaim and success it has achieved. Is RE8 the best Resident Evil game of all time? Or does it still have something to compete against?
First of all, since there are so many RE games out there we’re going to separate them into two different groups, and since picking a favorite can be so difficult sometimes everyone can just vote for their top 3 favorite games from the mainline series, and then we’ll see who are the truly crowned as the best RE games of the franchise.
We also won’t be listing any of the spin-off titles in the polls, since there are so many and they are so varied. Instead, if you really want to give a shout out to one of the spinoffs then just post a comment about it in the discussion area below!
As the RE franchise grows, it will undoubtedly attract new fans and it can be quite overwhelming to see all the extra content they could be experiencing as well. So hopefully this will allow some new players to see what other games they should check out.
And on the topic of the polls below, the ‘mainline’ series does not include the remakes, we’re talking about the original low-poly games of the PlayStation 1-2 era, as the Remakes are in a completely separate ballpark of their own and deserve their own poll.
So what do you think? What is your favorite Resident Evil game? Have you played many from the series? Or are you a new fan? Where would you recommend new players to start? Let us know!

Rather than trying to put them all in a list, I prefer tiers:
The Amazing: Resident Evil 4, 7, REmake, REmake 2
The Good: Resident Evil 0, 2, 3, 5, 8, REmake 3, Revelations, Revelations 2
The Tolerable: Resident Evil Outbreak, Outbreak 2, Deadly Silence, Gaiden, Umbrella/Darkside Chronicles
The Terrible: Resident Evil Code: Veronica, 6, Operation Raccoon City

I find that 5 doesn't get enough credit for being a really good couch co-op game, even if its story is goofy and it isn't really a horror game. Zero is also consistently underrated despite having some of the best environments in the series and some really fun new enemy types. Also, for some inexplicable reason, people seem to like Code: Veronica, a terrible game where it became clear RE had jumped the shark into full-on self-parody, necessitating a complete series reset in 4.

Of the ones I've played:

If RE Village is your first,I recommend you play Resident Evil 7 to better understand the characters and the story.

The 2002 Resident Evil Remake is my favourite, I think it’s the epitome of the Survival Horror genre and the prime example of how to remake a game.
Close second is the original RE2 on the third spot is Code Veronica
Of the non survival horror ones, I’d say 5 is the best, has all the gameplay greatness of 4, but none of the goofiness

I'd be interested to know how other long-time RE fans view RE7 & 8.
My wife is a big RE fan and while she still liked RE7 (haven't bought 8 yet), she doesn't really consider it (and 8, based on gameplay footage) to be a real RE game, more of a spin-off.
But back on topic, I think her favorite would be either RE4 or RE2. More likely RE4.

re8 is like a mix of re7 and re4. The fps perspective, block mechanic and the setting broad strokes of re4. Im pretty sure theres not much survival horror left in resident evil.
PC Specs
Yeah she likes a good mix of action and survival horror. And I think most would agree, which is why RE4 is highly regarded.
She confirmed RE4 is her fav. Next is actually code veronica, before RE2.
Also said RE7 and Revelations are great entries. However, the lack of tie-in with basically any existing RE storyline is what makes RE7 not seem like a real RE game, just an inspired spin off.

Feel like RE4 is a solid through out gameplay experience. RE5 was so fun with a friend. RE6 was a michael bay movie incarnate a real 12/10 on action and in my opinion a contender for "the room" of video games. RE8 story aspects really annoyed me but im glad we moved on from everyone´s favorite (sarcasm) resident evil main character Ethan Winters.

Haven't play Village, so excluding RE8 my top to bottom list:
RE3 (original)
RE2 Remake
RE1 Remake
RE CV
RE4
RE7
RE Rev1
RE Rev2
RE6
RE3 Remake

Oh i forgot RE5, its below RE Rev2
