We’re just a week away from the official EA Play Live event on July 22nd where we’ll be learning more about some of EA’s upcoming titles including the highly anticipated near-future take on the Battlefield series. Thankfully the developers have answered a few questions in anticipation including crossplay, cross-progression, and more.

The Battlefield 2042 developers recently held a Q&A where the team gave some more details about some of the new features in the game. One of which was about crossplay and cross-progression: whether they would be supported and how that would affect the gameplay.

On Xbox One and PlayStation 4 you will have access to the same gameplay features that we’ve announced for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5,” the post said. “Weapons, Vehicles, Specialists and Gadgets all remain the same no matter what generation of console you’re playing on.

So yes, there will be crossplay between PC and consoles, and there will be cross-progression between the console generations. However, crossplay is only limited to certain groups of players, as PC and next-gen console players are separated from last-gen consoles. But the reason is because last-gen console players will actually play on smaller maps:

Dynamic Weather events such as tornadoes, or Environmental Hazards like EMP storms will also be experienced by all players. The main differences between console generations is that we’ve made adjustments to the playable area on the maps to ensure a fluid play experience for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles.

Additionally, remember how BF2042 would fill up empty spaces with AI bots? That’s to ensure there would always be full servers on each map, but as it turns out there are some limitations on the bots and how they work. Crucially, they cannot be turned off, but players will always have priority over AI bots in multiplayer.

There’s also a limit to how many AI soldiers can spawn in a match, as there will be no more bots than there are players unless a match is still filling up. They’re also only limited to certain actions, as they can’t use specialists or traits, and they can’t use wingsuits, making them more of a support character but with the intelligence to engage in “enemy fire, flanking, throwing grenades or even reviving a downed squad mate.

There’s many more interesting tidbits to pick up in the recent Q&A, which you can check out the whole thing for yourself here. However, we thought these were the most interesting points to discuss. Obviously, we’ll be learning a lot more in the upcoming EA Play Live event, including what that ‘Mystery Mode’ actually is.

What do you think? Are you excited for Battlefield 2042? Do you enjoy crossplay on PC? How do you feel about the AI bots? Anything else you found interesting in the Q&A? Let us know!

Are you excited for Battlefield 2042?

What do you think of crossplay in PC multiplayer games?

Wish you could manipulate bots on your server and fill your server with them completely hahaha.

Crossplay is good. I don't care what other people think when they have their own opinion such as 'this is horrible, bad for competitive' like stfu

maybe people just wanna have fun? If thats something you don't enjoy and you only have fun when you're winning... maybe you're just a bad person. No, there is no disagreeing with me because people who only have fun winning really don't understand what it means to have fun. Just play dammit. Play with friends. Don't take gaming too seriously because that's ridiculous. It's not a job. It's a leisure. esports is a different story yeah, but i don't care!

This comment is so unbelievably arrogant and ignorant. I'm not very good at FPS games, so I have fun just by playing with friends, like yourself. To say other peoples version of having fun is wrong is just so many levels of stupid. Fun is entirely subjective. A lot of things I find fun, you won't.
Some people have fun by winning, and there's nothing wrong with that.

And its those people that believe Crossplay is horrible. What point are you trying to make here? That people who take the game seriously and only have fun winning should be the only ones to enjoy it? There's nothing ignorant or arrogant with what I've said. These competitive people hate casuals and with Crossplay, they'll have to deal with them more. Not everyone has the time to seriously game for more then 4 hours. Some people work 9-5 jobs.

Any game that allows me to play with my bro on Xbox is a win for me. However, he might need to upgrade to One X for this, if i read that right.

It's great that you can disable crossplay, wonder if console players will have aim assist enabled when playing with us

They disabled it in Overwatch and suddenly console players were being decimated, so I hope they disable it!

I don't like crossplay, but the kind of PC keyboard mingled with controllers in general, even on PC. That kind of crossplay.

I have been playing COD WZ with buddies on console, seems mostly balanced. I looked at the KD differences and PC had 0.1 higher KD, but died more frequently (shorter life span). In my region crossplay will mean that there will be at least 1 server up. In my country sometimes a single server can't be maintained, so any way to allow a game to go ahead I will welcome.

The last gen versions sound like the PS3/360 versions of BF3, where maps like Caspian Border was literally about half the size as it was on PC because the could only have half the players.

cross play for those who take multiplayer very seriously is bad as they are playing with less reactive players but then again they hate playing with pretty much everyone for them competetive lobbies exist and a distinction will always exist

Re-read the article. Last gen consoles will be stuck with each other since they have to have smaller maps. They won't be able to play with PC players.

Personally I don't like crossplay in any game, it only adds absolute bots on my team and they are just a burden when you have to carry them

I play COD WZ and I have a 2.6kd and a console player in my squad (PS4) has 3.3kd. I don't think the difference is that great. Some console players are more casual and perhaps play on a 50/60hz TV, but with 128 players...there is always going to be a wide range of skill levels.

To me, you're acting like one of those people who take multiplayer way too seriously.
