Assassins Creed Infinity will still deliver a rich narrative, despite being Live Service

Despite their flaws, the Assassins Creed franchise has always offered big and rich narratives full of historical culture. It’s had its ups and downs over the years, but many fans are worried that the upcoming Live Service title will dull those rich stories. Thankfully, Ubisoft has cleared up some of these concerns.

During their most recent earnings call, Ubisoft CFO Frederick Duguet talked about how the next generation of the AC series (specifically the newly announced Assassins Creed Infinity) will still offer players the story-driven games they’ve come to love from the franchise:

[We’re] committed to staying true to the DNA of [Assassin’s Creed],” Duguet said. “Meaning that we come with high quality narrative experiences. Regarding the project codename Infinity, we have exciting plans for the future that have the potential to significantly expand both the brand’s reach and the recurring profile while holding true to Assassin’s Creeds’ legacy of rich narrative experiences.

Although many fans have complained about the ‘bloated’ gameplay in the recent reboot trilogy of games, most recently Assassins Creed: Valhalla, they have offered an extremely large and thorough narrative to keep users playing well over 100 hours if they choose to. With a Live Service title, the opportunity for making an expansive story is more limited due to the nature of regular updates.

So it will be interesting to see if Ubisoft can somehow pull off a project like this with the same essence that made fans love the AC series. The idea of hopping from one time period to another instead of just staying in one is exciting to say the least, but you can’t offer 100+ hours of content every few months as it's not feasible for players or developers.

Speaking of Valhalla though, it seems that Ubisoft are really keen to test the Live Service model even further in its Year 2 content roadmap. Nothing has been revealed in explicit detail yet, but Duguet insisted that it will be the best year for the game and its players:

We are pushing the live service model to a level that allows Valhalla to be the best performer ever for the franchise to date, and we will be coming with exciting and new news and surprising [announcements], including for the second year of content.

What ‘surprises’ are in store for us? Well we’re not sure yet, as the first year of content is still yet to come to an end with the upcoming expansion The Siege of Paris arriving soon. It’s likely we’ll hear more details though coming up to AC Valhalla’s 1 year since launch, but its nice to see Ubisoft still supporting the game even after so long since release.

What do you think? Are you excited for Assassins Creed Infinity? Do you think the Live Service model will help or hinder its storytelling? Do you enjoy the AC franchise’s narratives? Or do you prefer the gameplay over the story? And are you excited for the second year of content for Valhalla? Let us know your thoughts!

Are you excited for Assassins Creed Infinity?

Do you think Live Service will help or hinder AC Infinity's storytelling?

Do you enjoy the AC games for their story or gameplay?

I throw up a little when ever I see the combo of words Assassins Creed Infinity. This is Yves Guillemot's wet dream wgen defending AC Odyssey and its stupidly boring open-world that he wanted to create a world where players can have many different 15 hour campaign adventures and keep coming back to buy our 20 Euros skin pack! FCKING 20 Euros!

I did like AC Valhalla but I used mods to skip the ****ty grind it offered to experience the campaign and that's after I bought the Ultimate Edition for it. Padding isn't gameplay and Ubi won't be luck every time

Underneath all the padding there was a very good story to be had in Valhalla and that's why the game sold well. It was a return to narrative form after the sh!tshow that was AC Odyssey.

But no matter how you cut it AC infinity will fail as live service by its very design provides hindrances to storytelling and gameplay or else no one would buy over-priced in-game sh!t. Ubisoft are criminals charging exorbitant prices for cosmetic stuff in single player games. I imagine with live service they will adopt Tencent pricing models like with Valorant.

I am not really excited for Infinite Live Service, provided it will be as infinite as game title suggests. I have no doubts that it will hinder storytelling and gameplay as well with more micortransaction spending incentives. But I guess we will see... Ubisoft definitely isn't one of publishers who would change their mind even if negative opinions would slap them in the face.

As long as its a live service then i don't care what they do to it, even if its the best thing since sliced bread, i will never touch it.

I think they lost their creative passion, every year AC launched it's just another reskined cash grab, seems like it's a new Ubisoft strategy o managing games, zero inovations, a downgrade with each title. No parkour, no stealth. Anything that made it AC at this point

"Live service"

Hard pass then. Especially if it's pay to play. Besides I am already playing a live service RPG and it got a huge update just last night. I rather focus on that considering how huge it is anyway.

Also, Ubisoft, no one asked for or wants this. Just give us the good old fashioned offline single player experience like you been doing. That is what people want.

And yet they act like it is. Either way, I don't care. I will keep fighting it until I am 6ft under.

To be honest I have played every AC game but I stopped enjoying them after Syndicate. There is no hope for this series.

The last 3 AC were very good. Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla.

if you call rehashed, literally the same map just in different colors GOOD and with 50 or whatever they say hours of mission gameplay which are boring repetitive side quests then idk what else to tell you. Kids these days won't know how good this industry was once

What makes a game good is strictly a matter of opinion. As for what I think? I have no opinion because I haven't played a single game since Black Flag really (never bothered to get far though.)

I have played them but for me they were bad games. Feels like nothing you do is important, characters are forgettable and combat is getting worse and worse

Origins was great, Valhalla is good and Odyssey was sh!t mate.
What was good about Odyssey?

The grind? The over-priced micro-transactions? The fact that the game was a grindy level-gated sh!tshow unless you bought the permanent XP booster?

The lore which was totally disrespected and fcked over fans like if an absolute imbecile wrote the script? The fact that the writers weren't even aware of the history and lore of the series itself? The padding which passed for gameplay like delivering laundry? The absolutely asinine campaign? Please tell me
