EA believes they do not get enough credit for how they handle studio acquisitions

Electronic Arts may not be known for their valiant successes in studio acquisitions, apparently, but they want to turn that around. After shutting down multiple beloved studios in the past, EA now thinks they might have turned a new leaf as they believe they don’t get enough credit for how they handle them.

During their recent earnings call, Blake Jorgensen, the CFO at EA, praised their acquisition of Codemasters as their latest release of F1 2021 is currently performing very well and sales are exceeding expectations, something which Jorgensen attributes to how well Codemasters managed to merge with EA’s strategies.

It's to the testament of an exceptional game development team that was able to produce the right assets, to produce the right marketing materials to help us drive this business and the teams working together,” Jorgensen said. “And you know what? I think we don't get enough credit for that.

Admittedly EA has handled the Codemasters acquisition better than they have others in the past, with the CEO of Codemasters themselves praising EA and claiming they are a “perfect fit” by being able to keep their identity without much interference.

Another good example is Respawn, who not only impressed many (through reception and sales) with the single player Action Adventure Star Wars: Jedi - Fallen Order, but have also seen continued breakout success with the popular Battle Royale game Apex Legends.

Respawn has obviously driven the amazing development of Apex, but they've partnered with us extremely well to drive what is now—it's coming up to almost $2 billion in business over two years. That's unheard of in our industry. And I'm not sure we get enough credit for it.

Of course, Respawn and Codemasters have only reached so high standing on the corpses of countless other studios that EA shut down over the years. Many of which fans are still not over, despite many successors coming after them.

Maybe this is signifying a change for the publisher, but they can’t expect everyone to immediately praise them after beloved studios like Visceral Games, Westwood, Pandemic Studios etc. Just look at the initial reception of EA possibly acquiring Codemasters and you’ll see there isn’t much faith in EA in that front.

What do you think? Has EA handled studio acquisitions well recently? Are these good for the studios working with them? Let us know your thoughts!

Do you think EA has handled studio acquisitions well lately?

Do you have more faith in EA moving forward now?

So EA really just went and said:
"We COULD be destroying the entire gaming industry by buying these people out and making them do our laundry or something, BUT we're only making them hammer down on microtransactions instead so give us a break."

EA praising themselves? What's next? Saying that they did a good thing for the games industry with the mtx and gambling?

I think they did to some degree. All the studios they closed made multiple financially failed games before they closed them.

And why did they fail? Did they fail based on their own doing? Or did they fail because EA forced them to use Frostbite Engine, because EA forced them to make more mainstream game with micortransactions and wider appeal, because EA forced them to make game in record short time, because EA told studio that was known for singleplayer RPGS to make multiplayer looter shooter for the first time?

Most likely because of EA and because a ton of people leave when a studio/company gets bought.
And yes the Frostbite fiasco and I forgot the name of the game is all EA's management's fault hands down.

Only reason why Respawn was allowed to make Fallen Order is because someone high in Respawn is also on board with shareholders, so they could talk with rest and shareholders as well as higherups trusted them way more than any other studio. I would love to see EA do better after graveyard they left behind, but they have yet to prove that they can.

They rarely fired people from closed divisions/studios.

Still doesn't change the fact that they left graveyard of studios that failed after EA and management started dictating them how to do things, mismanaged them by telling them to make games in genres where they have 0 experience and use engine they had to first modify to even be able to make game they needed, which shaves off few years of development,... But yes, they did reshuffle people.

Though that is like you destroy someones house and then you are the good guy because you gave them room in your own house... how about not being the evil person who destroyed someones home in the first place. Just saying.

Well I highly doubt EA(or any company) would invest in a studio with the idea of losing money and closing them down.
Also a lot of people quit when management changes, so it's likely those studios lost a lot of highly skilled developers when EA bought them.

I highly miss Westwood, Pandemic Studios, Black Box Games Visceral games and Dange Close Games.

True, but then again, all of the studios still managed to release at least one post EA takeover game which was great. If staff changes really were the cause only games that were just before release would be fine. Instead they released great games under EA, then EA decided it wants some change and next game was pretty much doomed. Of course they didn't buy them to lose money,...

... but EA got greedy, wanted to earn more, so they pushed microtransactions or directional changes to make more mainstream appeal, like Dead Space 3. Thinking game will sell better and they will make more money. Instead it flopped and studios got closed.

Well EA bought them usually at the end of their at the time current game development, that's how usually those companies and other companies as a whole get bought. You buy them close to a product release.

I'm mostly thinking about 2000s studios that got closed more than 2010s studios, but true for the stupid MTs.

wtf that sounds so pretentious. 'Oh look at how well we are doing! People should be praising us over how we dealt with this. We're amazing' ¬-¬ Seriously everytime someone opens their mouth from EA it's always something terrible in some way. They really need to stfu and become a better company rather than say they are already perfect (which has been proven time and again that is not the case).

regardless what EA has and will do, i cant respect them anymore. Sure i bought jedi fallen order and will buy their products IF they are actually good, which is quite rare, but i will never respect them, that ship has sailed long time ago.

the only way i can give credit to EA is advertising their games, but afterwards is random meh. All, tho the only game i would play is Apex legends, but i dislike battle royal games cuz i suck on them. U die once u repeat. Or u kill 1, 2 enemies u die. Ive 100 random hours on the game throughout the months and years and i got 0 wins. I got wins only in the 3v3 mods where there were
