Saints Row reboot reveal has fans divided, but the developers are standing their ground

By all means, YouTube metrics are not the most telling of an audience’s perception of games, but they do give some insight into how fans perceive certain game reveals. The latest to stir up controversy is the recent Saints Row reboot, which was officially revealed this week during the Gamescom 2021 Opening Night Live show.

Currently, the announcement trailer for Saints Row has more dislikes than likes. Not by a massive margin though, nothing like Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare when that was first revealed. However, the developers have since responded, stating that they will not be backing down from their new vision.

Across three major channels - the PlayStation, Xbox, and the official Saints Row channel - the total number of likes and dislikes comes to nearly 70,000. However, the majority of those are dislikes at 38,400, with only 31,400 likes remaining. Whilst it’s not a major difference, proving the fanbase is divided, it does show that the response has been mostly negative rather than positive.

More interestingly, the Xbox and PlayStation channel versions have a significantly higher ratio than the official Saints Row channel, sitting at 54% and 50% positive reactions respectively. But the main Saints Row channel version currently sits at 39% positive reactions, suggesting more hardcore fans of the series are disappointed by the reboot than the general gaming audience.

Responding to a less-than-positive reaction on Twitter, Saints Row developer Volition responded by saying that: “We are not backing down on this game. We get it, it’s new and it’s a shock reaction to a reboot like no other.

What do you think? Are you excited for the Saints Row reboot? Does it really deserve this much criticism over the announcement trailer before we see any proper gameplay? Did Saints Row need a fresh new start? Or would you have preferred them to work on what they already established? Let us know your thoughts!

Are you interested in the new Saints Row reboot?

Would you have preferred a return to the old Saints Row? Or something new and fresh like this one?

There are two gropups of Saints Row fans, one that is all about gangsters(sr1,2) and the other that just likes random !^%# happening(sr3,4), i am the fan of the second group and this trailer shows us something thats exactlly in btw thos two groups not reaching to either so who is this game made for?

Its just looks like a trailer for some random game, i mean just slaps on it title Watch Dogs spinoff and it would be more likable

To be honest, I don't see it as bad as some people, though my opinion of it might be bit controversial one. Feels bit like developers wanting to reboot it into something fresh, which includes modern trends and good portion of fan base being "grumpy old men" about it, because in their time, Saints Row was different... Basically colorful graphics automatically means Fortnite and Fortnite bad, introducing social media to it, bad, because social media bad,... Like yes, it isn't old Saints Row, but that is normal, times change and this is reboot not remake. And I feel like dislikes are coming from people wanting modernized remake, rather than reboot. Still all of this is pretty pointless since it is just whole CGI trailer, not gameplay one. And sure, franchise will in the process lose some of its old identity, but it will be down to developers to make it stand out and create its new identity. Based on trailer, I wouldn't say this means terrible game, but then again, it is CGI trailer and that tells us just about nothing in terms of majority of the game. Though developers in a way are walking thin line between standing their ground and what community wants. Which will mean they might need to market it harder towards new audiences, since old one might pull out and they will have similar situation to DMC reboot. Which wasn't bad game, it just didn't sell well to old fans and didn't manage to attract enough new fans. Then again, it also can work, like with Assassins Creed Origins, which also transited away from stealth focused assassin play, which also wasn't liked by portion of old fanbase. So I guess we will see.

Personally I still am interested, but will ultimately decide on whether I buy it post release, once I know what I am buying. Which is basically what everyone should be doing.

To be fair the last saints row were colorful as well, i personally dont care if they use the woke agenda, as long as the game is good.

Hmm... So I took a look and I can see why the dislikes. If this didn't tell me that it's "Saints Row" - I would have thought it's just another one of those fartnite/apex cinematics. Funky colors - check. "That" style - check. "Woohoo!!" during action - check...

I wanted to edit the comment, but can't... wanted to add "obligatory neon cat mask - check" to the list...

The older Saints were cool AF. whereas hese guys look like millennial wannabe Saints. Not a dig at millennials but this dumbed down fortnite art style just isn't for me.

I like bright colors in games and all but this looks like a game for 3 year olds and below. Not always the case but strong mature leads (male & female) add a lot to the game. Ddevelopers seem to lose their way when catering to the current market by portraying the protagonist as a reflection of the current younger gen. I f people wanted to be themselves, they would just live their life. Video games should be about fantasy right?

Example:

Strong leads - Shepard, Geralt, Adam Jensen, Kratos, Ezio, Lara Croft, Every anime character that looks young but is 400 years old (lol)

Forced weak pre-pubescent leads - Ryder (vomit), Jason Brody (FC3 luckily had Vaas)

I cannot make a sufficient call and whether it good or bad until they actually show gameplay and what they've changed. If its completely different to the fun of the originals, like that god awful spin off was, then I have no interest whatsoever. Going only by the cgi trailer it doesn't look like saints row and thats about it.

Very corny, I wasn't particularly interested anyway but it's definitely not for me, maybe gameplay can redeem it. However I feel an urge to distance myself from some of the video commenters spouting rubbish about agendas and wokeness. So with that being said 10/10 trailer, looks great.
