Grand Theft Auto 3 and GTA Vice City fan modders are being sued by Take-Two Interactive

Written by Stuart Thomas on Fri, Sep 3, 2021 4:31 PM

A group of fan modders recently took the opportunity to try and reverse engineer the code for Grand Theft Auto 3 and Grand Theft Auto Vice City. Whilst technically legal, Take-Two is now suing the group of modders for “irreparable harm” to the publisher and are now seeking damages.

The modders claim that Take-Two has no ground, since the reverse-engineered code is not technically property of Take-Two. Additionally, in order to play these versions you must also own a copy of the original game for many of the assets. So the modders aren’t actually releasing any of Take-Two’s property for free, unlike Take-Two is claiming.

The main problem, it seems, is that the reverse-engineered games allow for porting to consoles the games were never originally released on, like Nintendo Switch, PS Vita, or even the Wii U. Some have even speculated this lines up with previous rumors of a Grand Theft Auto Remake Trilogy, which would include GTA 3, GTA Vice City, as well as GTA San Andreas.

Take-Two has been recently going on a rampage by taking down mods for some of their old games, most notably the GTA series. Again, whilst it is just speculation, it certainly explains why they’ve been doing it when you consider they might be working on some classic GTA remakes at the moment.

What do you think? Does it sound like Take-Two has some ground here? Do you think it reinforces the rumor they are developing some GTA remakes? Let us know your thoughts!

Recently i have been seeing how well these companies, that i would have liked to give my money to, because of the great games they push out, have been treating the community, makes me feel quite displeased. It's not even necessary to do this kind of thing, but they do it anyways. Like for !^%# sake, just tell them what you want, why you want it and don't be such a dick about it.

Why is it that companies these days can't act like people and just HAVE TO be this greedy?

One of the answers to your question is, cause they can. While they'll claim heaven and earth and anything in between is done for the game and the gamers, nothing could be further from the truth.

The world is run by petty children...

Take Two is just an awful business, forcing Rockstar to do what they say and taking down anyone they want to just because they can.

Would have bought the remasters if they looked worth the money, but after pulling this I may just avoid them. I have been using these two mods for a while, and they really help with the old games. Going after the modders like this just seems petty. Bad enough after the BS Games Workshop is pulling with animators.

Unfortunately it doesn't matter if Take-two has legal grounds or not, I doubt a judge will just laugh in their face an throw the case out. They have the money to just draw a court battle out to bankrupt those modders, because the longer it goes the more money will have to be paid to a lawyer.

So what you are saying is Take2 would pull a Sony vs Bleem just because they can. I wish companies would be punished by the consumer for this type of action.

not just a Sony but any major corporation, there's a reason that a lot of people who get screwed over don't pursue a legal battle despite having a strong case. It doesn't matter how open and shut it is if the billionaires can just draw things out until you give in.

what i was referencing how sony kept the guys behind bleem in court long enough to bankrupt them even though they weren't doing anything wrong but the judge couldn't just throw it out.

players around the world should stop using or buying their products for a month. that impact would change their actions.

sadly, that will never happen. apathy is the reason we have businesses that act like this, consumer products that are scalped and just a general sense about ones neighbor.

When the publisher goes after mods - they're scumbags... God, how I hate the legal suits and their ratty behavior...
