Up For Debate - What are the best games you can replay?

In (slightly late) honor of the time-looping action game Deathloop from Arkane that launched recently, along with the myriad of time-looping games that have seemingly popped out of nowhere all to release in the same year, we thought we could look at some great games that are the best for replayability.

Though some may say replayability is the biggest factor in purchasing new games (extending playtime etc.), some of us also don’t really particularly care that much whether a game offers any replayability or not. But one thing’s for sure: there are games out there that are meant to be replayed over and over, and can even offer new mechanics, story, or even entire areas to discover that you may have missed before.

We’ve had a couple Up For Debate’s around the same topic, including How often do you replay games?, and What Makes A Game Replayable, or even Do You Replay Your Games?, but this time we thought we could actually make some suggestions/recommendations into what are the best games to replay. This not only includes specific game titles, but also genres like Action, RPG, Simulation etc.

Obviously, some of the best games for replayability are usually RPGs, since most of them have you make tough choices that can drastically affect the story and/or gameplay. The Witcher 2 for instance, has you make a significant choice that will completely change which area you go to in the late game. Or some games like Dark Souls even include New Game+, allowing you to start the game again with all your equipment and abilities you’ve gained already.

So what do you think? What are the best games you can replay? What genre is best suited for replayability? Do you replay games that much anyway? Let’s debate!

Do you enjoy replaying games?

Which genre of games offers the best replayability?

Is replayability an important factor for you when purchasing new games?

In the past decade i tend to replay a lot of games.Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition, American McGee's Alice and Madness Retuns, No One Lives Forever, Aliens versus Predator 2, Bulletstorm, Hard Reset, Darksiders 1 and 2, the Force Unleashed, Need For Speed III, NFS Underground and 2,BllodRyane, Rage.Sometimes i just instal NFS for a quick race, or "Unreal Tournament" 1999 for some multikills.Depends on the mood.

I dump thousands of hours in series like the Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Europa, Crusader Kings, and the Total War series.

What makes game replayable is bit though to answer, since it can depend, be it infinite fun of multiplayer, trying different decisions, classes or builds, or simply to experience it again overtime. RPGs usually have quite few reasons to replay by design. But even more linear experiences can be fun to replay, even if it isn't immediately after you are done with it.

As for whether replayability is important, I would say not really for me, as long as game has enough content. I am perfectly happy with playing games that deliver more content with replayablility. But it is not mandatory for me, I can also have fun with games which I might not really replay again anytime soon. Though never say never, I guess. But as long as I get a lot of fun out of the game, I am all in for it.

Dark souls as shown in the thumbnail. I bought DS prepare to die edition in 2014 and never touched it until 2021. Have already played it 4 times doing different classes like sorcery, strength, dexterity, faith. Really great game there, I wish I had known how good the game is back in 2014.

And Dead Space 2, I have replayed that game so many times in PS3 and later on PC.

GTA4, KotOR 1/2, Deus Ex Human Revolution, Gothic 1-3. Had fun replaying these even more than three times each. There were definitely others, but I don't remember them now.

I never replay games. I finish them and move on to the next. Too many games/not enough time.

That said, Rimworld is sole exception, thanks to the mods and just how completely addictive it is.

Now imagine RimWorld, but as another game someone might really like. That's why people replay games :P

Oh, I'm not against others replaying games at all. I'm just saying, that's not usually my style.

I'm also not a fan of already knowing the story, even if there are different endings/paths, I already know the major hooks and that sort of lessens the experience for me. Same with other media too. I don't like rewatching movies/shows unless a significant amount of time has passed and I've forgotten the majority of the plot.

I don't think I've ever reread a book. Not enough time in a single lifetime to read all the books I wish I could.

I think you're sorta missing out then, though you're also most likely not bothered. I rewatch my fave shows every now and again on a whim and on soo many occasions I watched something and picked up on something new - references that flew over my head, jokes I may not have understood the first time, a meaning for something I didn't pay attention to, etc. Rewatching/replaying things as an adult vs when I was a teenager, for example, gives me a very different perspective on things and I find new joy in that, as I gain a ton of new life experience and learn new things over the years. Mafia II definitely hit different notes for me between the two replays years apart, mainly because my brain matured and understood more things about life and history.

I get the argument of "no time for that", but then you can't possibly understand the whole artistic creation (be it a game, book or a movie/show) by just experiencing it once. You say you already know what happens - perfect, actually, you can focus on the things you've missed (and if the piece of art is good and complex - you will miss things)

I get it, though, not everyone's cup of tea and not everyone cares. I just think that the good stuff often offers a different experience and reveals more layers in subsequent replays, especially as we move on through life, as our values and knowledge change.

Played some ONI but not Dyson Sphere. Will keep on the radar though.

Xquatrox, I certainly understand the seeing new things you missed first time round, Yet, rarwly does that compel me to want to chase the same experience again. I like my media "fresh."

As, you say though, rewatching/playing something as an adult does often put a different spin on things. Thankfully, my memory usually clears out old stuff enough that I do tend to forget a significant amount of the plot after 8-10 years or so. So, when I do return to something, it mostly feels new.

RPGs have the best replayability for sure. But it's more dependent on the game itself than the genre. And I'd argue that a lot of linear games also have a ton of replayability. Soulsborne games for example, God of War(old and new), PoP, Devil May Cry.

And simulations are replayed all the time, I mean if you are playing a racing sim, the moment you've played every track now you are replaying it. :D

Match based games like rts games and fps games are literally replayed tons and tons of times a day.

I wanted to play the first elder scrolls , the very first were not playable for me in the sense that hated the controls and the camera, then went to play morrowind and got stuck on a mission and got frustrated, guess new games made me want games to hold my hand :) and well have not really tried the others.

Oh, don't worry, Skyrim is not really an "old game" like that - plenty of hand-holding there (you could literally read/listen-to almost nothing and just mindlessly follow the quest markers if you want to). It's just a very nice game to get lost in, especially if you wack a few mods in there :)
