Sony is unlikely to release new PlayStation games simultaneously on console and PC at launch

As fans of video games, there are few studios out there that immediately bring to mind the idea of premium AAA quality content, one of which is undoubtedly PlayStation Studios. Unfortunately for us, those games have long been console exclusives, but that is slowly changing with Sony starting to release former PlayStation exclusives on PC.

Sony first officially started it with Horizon: Zero Dawn in 2020, followed by Days Gone in early 2021, and next will be the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection in 2022. At this rate we’ll be getting a PlayStation game on PC every year, but a new interview with a former PlayStation executive reveals that Sony is unlikely to ever release new PlayStation games simultaneously on console and PC at launch, but it’s not an impossibility:

The idea of going to PC—and I don’t think you’ll ever see PlayStation do a day and date with PC, but you know, never say never—but the strategy as we were developing it when I was there was that we need to go out to where these new customers are, these new fans could be,” said Shawn Layden, former PlayStation US boss.

We need to go to where they are because they’ve decided not to go to come to my house so I’ve got to go to their house now.

And what’s the best way to go to their house? Why don’t I take one of our top selling games, which has already blown up the marketplace, it’s already been out there for 18 months or 24 months, there’s no real retail activity against that title, I’m not trading off one sale for another, and bring that to the personal computer platform and let them have an idea – you guys choose not to come to PlayStation but let me show you what you’re missing.

As a business strategy, it certainly makes a lot of sense to release an exclusive long after its initial release. Layden even says how “there’s no losing in this transaction” since PC sales won’t be interfering with console sales that long after release, and in an ideal world will even persuade PC players to possibly buy a console in the future.

It’s a way of outreach, that’s how I see it – trying to get to the people that the platform doesn’t currently speak to,” Layden added.

The statement echoes that of current PlayStation Studios Head Hermen Hulst, who recently stated that they will continue to invest in the PC platform, but to not expect simultaneous launches on PC and consoles, as PlayStation will still be the focus and the best platform to experience PlayStation games first.

What do you think? Will Sony ever release PlayStation games simultaneously on PC and consoles at launch? Or will PC players forever have to wait at least 2 years after release? Would you ever buy a PlayStation console because the exclusive was too great a temptation? Let us know!

Are you happy waiting 18-24 months for a PlayStation game to launch on PC?

Would you ever buy a PlayStation console because an exclusive was too tempting?

There are enough AAA games for the computer that I did not have time to play, so investing in the console is too much

To be honest they've been playing with exclusivty so long that when I see that a game is exclusive to that platform I really don't care and bother to know more about the title.

I know God of War, Horizon and Uncharted may be good games (I never played one, so no idea) but i'm also not going to research about a game I can't play.

I may not even gonna bother buying these titles on PC, but who knows, as they said, never say never.

Now if you wanna release Bloodborne on PC that would be a different story.

I'm happy to see exclusives come to the PC and welcome its continued progress. I also don't care if it doesn't. PC has far too many games for me to care about a few exclusives from consoles no matter how much marketing they get, to me if the game is not on PC then it doesn't exist, that's how I view the world. Sorry but why should I buy a vastly inferior and restricted plastic box for a 3 digit number amount just to have access to 1 or 10 games? that's just stupid.

I am just grateful they are actually porting them to PC. Even if it is delayed or it has to wait till next generation. It is way better than nothing we got before. Is it long wait? Yes, but better late than never. At least that is the way I see it.

As for console, I wanted to jump on board with PS5, but ended up not doing it, because of shortage... since I definitely am not camping in front of store or whatever you need to get one. Not sure how situation is now, since I didn't really keep checking after about a month or two after release. But I was willing to buy it, because I am not really exclusively gaming on just PC. And especially with 60FPS, I would be happy with console gaming too. I do prefer PC, but I guess I am gamer first, well before PC enthusiast. And that way I wouldn't be left to mercy of Sony, when they decide to release something on PC.

I for one would have never ever bought a console just for a few game exclusives. So thanks for releasing Horizon Zero Dawn. Game was a blast and looked gorgeous on my RTX 3080 at 4k on an OLED TV. Keep em coming. I'll wait.

I still can't believe that they're actually releasing them so I'll wait

It makes sense. I don't like it but it does make sense. I just wish they would hurry up and start releasing their backlog of exclusives already instead of one game a year cycle.
