Up For Debate - What did you think of the Battlefield 2042 Beta?

This week saw two big games get the spotlight: Ubisoft’s next entry in the Far Cry series, and the Open Beta for EA’s next entry in the Battlefield series. Although the latter technically came out first on October 6th, that was for Early Access, and the proper ‘Open’ Beta has just finished. So we want to know what you thought of it!

Whether you joined at the start of the Early Access period, or later during the General Access, we’d love to know what you thought of Battlefield 2042. Did you enjoy it mostly? What was the gunplay like for you? What did you think of the new map and mode? And how did you feel about the bots?

Obviously this wasn’t the full game, with only one game mode showcased on one map, so by no means does it reflect what the full game will be like on launch, but it certainly gives us a taster of what’s to come. Will it be able to hold up against the Battlefield hall of fame? Or will this be another Battleflop? Unfortunately we won’t know right now, but we’d love to hear your initial thoughts at least!

It’s safe to say that BF2042 is pretty highly anticipated, and we’re still over a month from the full release after the game was recently delayed. We might get another round of a Beta before launch, but that is rather unlikely, and we’re still due to hear more about the mysterious Hazard Zone game mode, whatever that may be.

So what do you think? How did you find the Battlefield 2042 Beta? Did you enjoy it? What has been your favorite Battlefield game of recent entries? And does BF2042 hold up to it? Let’s debate!

What did you think of the Battlefield 2042 Beta?

What has been your favorite mainline Battlefield game so far of recent titles?

Are you more or less excited for the full launch of BF2042 after the Beta?

I'm super excited for it. I didn't enjoy the last few battlefields but this one really surprised me. It is so smartly re-designed that It allows a lot of different people to enjoy it. Even if it might annoy or even insult true battlefield fans. I think this is a step forward

I saw this video and I can't believe people are excited for this sh!t of a game that asks next-gen pricing while not even offering features or basic graphics like BF4 did.

I don't like the specialists. Having named characters adds absolutely nothing to the game, while it makes it way harder to tell what your squad needs in it, and having every character be able to equip anything at all means you can't tell what your team mates are able to do. Need ammo? you can't go to a support team mate anymore cause they might actually have specced to be a sniper just using the support specialist.

Also considering it was 64 v 64 the maps felt VERY empty. Like struggeling to find enemies even around the capture points empty.

If they insist on having the specialist system, the specialists should be the classes they say they are. The engineer specialist should be an engineer, the medic and medic and so on. They should basically be different abilities of the same class. So if you want an engineer with a turret and a repair tool you get X engineer specialist. If you want one with a rocket launcher and grappling hook you get Y engineer specialist. But they should both be engineers and be limited in what weapons and equipment they can use as a result of that.

Apart from the bugs and the lag, i found its pretty enjoyable. been playing bf since day one and i like the changes. but guarantee im going to have some twit say im not a real battlefield player.....sorry that I don't want the same game every release.

had no issues telling friendly's from enemy's.

the plus system is awesome and extremely handy

didnt find the specialist to be "!^%#ing stupid" as some say...you can still run your engineer, medic etc...people are just being sooks.

still have the same old issues of no-one wanting to revive, but wouldn't be bf if you had medics doing their job.

Also is was a beta people! there will be more !^%# to customize on release..no need to get sooky because you didn't get a full game to play.

and because it wont let me add my rig

You basically have the same build as me, for me the game was nearly unplayable. High FPS but it was stuttering and mini-freezing like crazy. What version of windows are you running if I may ask? I'm wondering if win11 has something to do with it.

I went in expecting to be disappointed, and I was right. It hardly even feels like BF anymore. The audio design is subpar (often can't even tell if I'm hitting the enemy because the hit sound is almost nonexistent), UI is plain terrible, the map felt empty even when the server was full. And the specialists are a mistake (WHY change this???) since everyone has the same stuff and looks the same...really hard to tell the enemy apart from friendly on close encounters. The list just goes on and on...Someone described this as a "Chinese free-to-play BF ripoff and they're not far off, imo.

Game ran pretty awful as expected with my aging i5 3570k (waiting for Zen 4 so I have an upgrade path), so I mainly played it on my cousin's PS5. I played every BF game since BF2: MC on ps2 and, while I have a love/hate relationship with BFV and BF1, I enjoyed them far more than this beta (and likely the full game). Orbital not being that great of a map had a small part of my dislike of the beta, but other than that, I do have some other issues for why I'm skipping this game, but I'm not interesting in writing a long list, so to summarize just a few of them, which aren't all major:

  • Specialists should've been the combat roles to base classes like they planned on doing in BFV but half-assed in the end. This would've been a nice compromise by allowing more diversity with reasonably-customizable base classes like in BFV and specialists/combat roles, which would've also allowed their MTX/battlepass nonsense. This would result in less of the comical attack of the clones problem this game has without factions and only 10 specialists at launch for 128 player servers. We'll see how the customization goes, as maybe this will become somewhat-less of an issue as time goes on, but doesn't change the fact that you can barely differentiate between enemy and ally players since they don't have faction-specific clothing/colors.

  • Some of the specialists' dialogue is fairly annoying and breaks the tone of the game in my opinion, especially Mackay's. Never really had this problem with other BF games' banter or BFV's elites, so this is a weird one.

  • Oddly enough, it felt like I was playing a CoD game trying to copy certain elements of BF (we can agree to disagree here if desired).2042 just doesn't feel like an overall improvement on previous titles, but rather a "one step forward, two steps back" situation much how BFV was.

  • I dislike the UI overall and the default cyan is fairly distracting given its color (I believe we can change this given the extensiveness of the color options for the colorblind).

Frankly, Portal is the only reason why I'd get this game on sale, assuming it works as well as it should and they keep updating it. I'm an avid lover of Halo custom games, so this is the only highlight of 2042 for me, unfortunately. I was really itching for a new BF after the numerous disappointments of BFV, but I guess I'll be playing Halo Infinite and MCC for now to scratch my shooter itch.

I was so shocked at how poor the beta was, they have so many BF games under their belt and this was surprising.

They actually don't have many BF games under their belt, as most of the veterans have already notably left DICE. A lot of them at this point are new and only have BFV (and maybe BF1) under their belt. Not sure about DICE LA/RIpple Effect, but DICE Stockholm has lost many of its veterans leading up to, during, and after the whole BFV fiasco.

Had pretty high FPS, but the game is stuttering like crazy. Little mini-freezes all the time, not just at the beginning of the round like in previous titles. Hope they get this sorted out until launch, if not I'll refund it until they do.

It was a rough beta all-around. Dysmal performance, lack of features such as full map and ammo and health request, issues with sound, poorly balanced weapons, and in my opinion the worst change ever in a BF game, the replacement of the class system in favor of operators, which I think pretty much trivialized the Battlefield experience.

The recoil-less RPG needs some drop... It's an OP sniper, pretty much.

Gliding on the ground, zero recoil, scripted destruction (what little available), tornadoes, and bunch of rambo's...this game was made by 5 fans of CoD and 5 fans of fortnite...in other words, it's !^%#tlefield.

Maybe in the future (2042) the weapons don't have much recoil. As a lover of arcade fps games i hate recoil.

That's the part that often screws with me a little bit coming back from Dusk, Doom, Quake, etc - the recoil and having what feels like 3 bullets in the mag xD

I found the game pretty enjoyable despite all the bugs. it felt like bf4 all over again with extra steps, but its was nice. strapin bombs to drones and explode them mid air was fun xD the weapons feel responsive and swaping attachments on the go its amazing. spawning vehicles to help you move around its also nice. lots of things to improve but overall, it felt like a battlefield game

Gun play was pretty fun but some things felt like a step backwards compared to older titles. The "classes" are a bit of a mess. Seems like weird metas are gonna be a thing, "self-healing sniper with unlimited ammo", not looking forward to that one... but maybe there is hope

Yeah, there were virtually no classes. The "preset" loadouts were a joke since as a preset medic you could have anything but medical stuff. That's one thing I found especially weird.
