Square Enix recently rebooted the Tomb Raider franchise with a new trilogy that first debuted in 2013, which saw the titular Lara Croft exploring new origins in an action-packed setting. But that wasn’t what it was initially planned out to be, as Square Enix have just revealed a Tomb Raider Horror game that was in development before the 2013 reboot.
The project was called Tomb Raider: Ascension, and whilst it wasn’t strictly a full on Horror title, it certainly included a lot of Horror elements. In celebration of Tomb Raider’s 25th anniversary, Square Enix have surprisingly released an early gameplay prototype for Ascension, which you can check out below:
From Ascension, the developers “honed in on telling an origin story through the lens of survival,” which was what ended up being the 2013 reboot. It’s an interesting look into game development, and how early prototypes can often become something else entirely different. Still, it would have been cool to see a Tomb Raider game with more of a focus on Horror.
What do you think? How do you feel about the early gameplay above? Would you have been interested in a Tomb Raider Horror game? Would you still like to see one made eventually? Let us know!
