Ubisoft may own some of the biggest IPs in gaming, but they are very well known to launch titles with optimization and compatibility issues. Recently the studio posted a statement saying that third-party applications like Discord, MSI Afterburner, or Skype can cause performance issues in their games.

What’s interesting is that most of these applications cause zero performance issues in other games developed by other studios, so some have speculated this as something to do with Ubisoft’s DRM in their games. Additionally, many have pointed out that developers should work to make sure their program is compatible with other programs.

What’s more is that many issues regarding performance problems in Ubisoft titles are not because of third-party apps, and instead the result of bad optimization, which Ubisoft rarely fixes. That said, this shouldn’t be disregarded completely, and if you are having issues with performance in their games like Far Cry 6 or Assassins Creed: Valhalla, then take a look at the options below:

First of all, here are the applications Ubisoft says are “likely to interfere” with their games and performance:

Fullscreen overlays Overwolf
Hardware monitoring software MSI Afterburner, Riva Tuner
Peer-to-Peer software BitTorrent, uTorrent
RGB Controllers or game optimisers Razer Synapse, SteelSeries Engine
Streaming application OBS, XSplit Gamecaster
Software impacting applications f.lux, Nexus Launcher
VPN software Hamachi
Video chat services Skype
Virtualising software Vmware
VoIP applications Discord, TeamSpeak

"We also recommend disabling experimental features available through NVIDIA GeForce Experience and Radeon Settings."

Next, try these steps to sort out any performance issues on your PC:

"Checking if a background application is causing the issue

Before trying the steps outlined, please close all open programs and reboot your system:

  • Press the Windows and R keys simultaneously.
  • Type msconfig into the box and press Enter.
  • Choose Selective startup.
  • Uncheck Load startup items.
  • Reboot your system.

If this has resolved your issue, it is likely that a background application was the cause.

Checking which background application is causing the issue

Before trying the steps outlined in the following guides, please close all open programs and reboot your system:

If the issue does not occur, follow the same steps checking the next startup item on the list.

Repeat this until you come across the issue again - the last startup item you checked will be the one interfering with your game.

Please note that this process will likely lead to disabling the firewall and security software. Once you have finished testing the game, do not forget to re-enable it.

Identifying problematic non-Microsoft services

You can easily disable multiple non-Microsoft services by following the steps outlined below:

  • Press the Windows and R keys simultaneously.
  • Type msconfig into the box and press Enter.
  • Navigate to the Services tab.
  • Check Hide all Microsoft services.
  • Please note that this step is important. Failing to do so will prevent your system from starting up.
  • Click Disable all or manually uncheck the boxes of the services you would like to disable.
  • Reboot your system.

If you choose to disable services manually, you can repeat this process until you identify the problematic one."

-------------

What do you think? Have you noticed any performance issues in recent Ubisoft games? Did these steps help? Or do you think they are unnecessary? Let us know your thoughts!

Do you normally have any of the apps listed above running whilst playing games?

Has the above steps helped you with performance issues in Ubisoft games?

Pass the buck for your inability to code anything properly Ubisoft and as always blame something else for your games issues.

Nothing like having a really high end PC for gaming and you come across texture issues because your GPU isn't AMD.Even with plenty of headroom VRAM wise it still looks like crap half the time.AMD's version of DLSS turned on doesn't even help and it honestly make the game look blurrier.Finished this !^%# with WEMOD in few days for the story and canceled my connect account.15 bucks for there half ass game wasn't a bad buy.F you Ubi!^%#!

Ironic fact: Said the same company that uses multi-layered cr4pware like Deadnuvo & VMP that not only hinders pc performance (far more then those apps they mentioned ever could) but it also wrecks SSDs lol

Companies like Ubi$cam see gamers as nothing but zombies to be exploited. Last few copy/paste games like AC, FC and even WD showed they really just don't care about anything but money... sad really, i used to like and enjoy ubisoft games long time ago :[

Denuvo only "wreck SSDs" if you run Windows 7 or below.

Denuvo games have dynamic launchers, this launcher will change and normally they occupy 200mb or so. What Denuvo does is that it will erase the actual launcher and create another one (in windows 8.1 and 10 denuvo will relocate instead of erasing so having windows 7 is a problem for the SSD) So when denuvo is doing this it will deteriorate the SSD. But is this suppose to be a problem? It depends, if you have low capacity available and slow SSD denuvo will fill the same gaps making holes and finally killing your SSD but if you have high capacity (100Gb-200Gb) available you won´t even notice.

Well, if you have trash level optimization, I guess even tiniest bit of extra freed performance can help. But a lot of those really will make no difference, unless you are using hardware towards minimum requirements. And sure troubleshooting wise, it is worth disabling and closing anything you possibly can. Since sometimes things can turn badly and even harmless application starts interacting with something it shouldn't and that needlessly hogs more resources than usually. But coming from Ubisoft, who is known for bad optimization and putting in third party DRM to even further effect performance, it kind of is ridiculous.

As for trying above steps, I didn't really have much of a need for that. Like a lot of that I don't even run in background. Though I did disable few overlays, because I really don't need like 4 overlays popping up when I run any of games... though nVidia is even asking me if I want to stream Libre Office. :-D Though I do run Discord and Skype in case I play with someone and we use one of those to chat. But most of stuff I do run on need to basis, rather than having bunch of it in background.

i had problem where i couldnt go online on uplay(ubisoft connect) and after some chating with support it ended up being Advance System Care which i used for atleast 4years alongside ubisofts launcher and i didnt had any problems and now all of sudden this started happening so i uninstaled Advanced System Care which fixed it just for few months latter similar problem happened where it would let me play online but would randomly disconect me the problem ended up being ESET NOD32 antivirus which i also used alongside Advance System Care and Uplay for many years

friggin division 2 crashes every time.. disabling all forms of in game overlay helps sparingly.. i know the beta wouldn't even launch with something like fraps running

If third party software causes performance issues then why Ubisoft uses DRM which is literally a additional layer of software on top of a game.

Thing is that running some software in background can be helpful like chating with friends on a discord while playing a game but with DRM (especially with single player games) consumer has nothing to gain while having a performance penalty. 😂

Oh sure Ubisoft. Let's all just stop using Discord because you can't be bothered to make your games work. Even indie studios don't have this problem.

They should stop blaming other apps for their incompetence, it's their job to make it work with other apps, once I had a bug in R6 siege where for some reason it showed me as offline to all of my friends and I couldn't send them a message nor invite to the game, but accidentally I got into a match with my friend, anyway, they kept throwing blame onto my pc, my apps running in the background, but it was never THEIR fault lol, and it fixed itself after a year magically the same way it started

They disabled comments on that !^%#ty youtube vid coz they just knew what would have happened had they not. Instead of of owning up to their flaws, they wanna pass the blame to programs we've been using for YEARS that doesn't cause any issues on other games.

Ubisoft needs to be fcking kicked out of PC and console game space.

These fcking pieces of sh!t have the galle to insult our intelligence. The only thing interfering with games is your fcking existence Ubisoft and your bastard practice of adding VMProtect, Denuvo, Uplay and whole layer of DRM sandwich to hurt legit customers. I am not buying another Ubisoft game from now on.

Ubisoft once accused 95% of PC players of being pirates a decade ago and their current DRM measures prove they have no faith in the PC community. So I guess its time to live up to the 'reputation' Ubisoft expects of PC players.

Pfft yeah ok, it surly cant be all the drm Ubisoft adds, Like Denuvo, VMProtect, and others that all get crammed into one game, which to this day they haven't removed from any of there older games and prob never will

Corsair iCUE is obviously not on the list because Ubi partner with Corsair to get the RGB themes for their games (Playing FarCry5 my entire keyboard resembles a waving american flag for example). Other than that I only usually have Discord on (no overlays - does it have any?) as I don't care to monitor anything unless I come across a problematic game, at which point task manager, my display's G-Sync OSD and GeForce monitoring tools are more than enough.

Discord does have an overlay but only some games it's enabled for by default, usually online games. SP games it's disabled.

Hahaha, what a bs, i get better performance from disabling their ingame overlay than disabling any other piece of software that is running in the background. Ubisofts game performance optimazation has always been bad.

i was playing AC Odyssey with the discord overlay on and the frametimes were horrible, now it makes sense. Its probably Denuvo causing it.

I do believe this has been tested before and afterburner is a known one. I don't know if it needs to be running to interfere or if monitoring has to be enabled.

So just tried with Valhalla and got slightly better min/.01% with afterburner off. Avg was identical. I do know that some other games have issues with ab so it's def not just ubisoft.
