During the Xbox 20th anniversary livestream yesterday, Microsoft revealed that the Multiplayer component of the upcoming Halo Infinite was officially released in a surprise early launch. The PC specs are a little demanding, so how well does it actually perform? What kind of hardware is needed to play at its best? We take a look at some performance benchmarks for Halo Infinite Multiplayer...

First of all, in this PC performance benchmark article for Halo Infinite Multiplayer, we benchmark a range of graphics cards going from the higher-end RTX 3070, which is close to the recommended GPU for Ultra; to the mid-range GTX 1060, which again is close to the minimum required GPU for Halo Infinite Multiplayer; and finally down to the lower-end AMD Radeon R9 380, to see whether lower-spec cards can run Halo Infinite Multiplayer in some capacity.

Then we go through the FPS test results of each graphics card running at 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen resolutions. From there we can see the performance of the minimum and recommended system requirement graphics cards and consider how well optimized Halo Infinite Multiplayer really is.

Unfortunately, Halo Infinite Multiplayer does not include an FPS benchmark tool, so to standardize these tests we loaded up a custom game on one of the multiplayer maps, running around and shooting a few enemies. In our tests we found that this run was pretty representative of your overall experience playing Halo Infinite Multiplayer.

The FPS performance of the RTX 3070 in Halo Infinite Multiplayer is really good at 1080p, delivering well over 100fps even on the maximum graphics settings. Therefore the RTX 3070 is perfect for playing Halo Infinite Multiplayer on Ultra graphics settings at 1080p resolution.

At 1440p, the FPS performance of the RTX 3070 in Halo Infinite Multiplayer is still really good, achieving over 60fps performance all the way up to the maximum graphics settings. In the end the RTX 3070 is perfect for playing Halo Infinite Multiplayer on Ultra graphics settings at 1440p resolution.

Finally at 4K, the RTX 3070's FPS performance in Halo Infinite Multiplayer is still pretty good, delivering over 60fps performance up to Medium settings, then dipping below 60fps on High and Ultra settings. If you want to stay competitive, the RTX 3070 is perfect for playing Halo Infinite Multiplayer up to Medium graphics settings at 4K, but is still perfectly playable at High or even Ultra graphics settings.

Looking over the results above, the RTX 3070 is perfectly suitable for playing Halo Infinite Multiplayer on Ultra graphics settings at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K resolutions. However, if you want to stay competitive with more than 60fps performance, it is recommended to stay on Low/Medium settings at 4K resolution.

The FPS performance of the GTX 1060 in Halo Infinite Multiplayer at 1080p is okay, with only the Low setting delivering more than 60fps performance. However, on Medium/High settings it is still playable, but Ultra might be treading the line too finely for a competitive multiplayer experience. Therefore, the GTX 1060 is suitable for playing Halo Infinite Multiplayer on Low graphics settings at 1080p, unless you don't mind a non-competitive experience in which case Medium-Ultra settings are still perfectly playable.

The GTX 1060's FPS performance in Halo Infinite Multiplayer at 1440p resolution is not great, but still playable up to High graphics settings, though anything above can impact your actual competitive performance. If you want to play Halo Infinite Multiplayer at 1440p on a GTX 1060, your best chances of a competitive experience is on Low graphics settings, though is still playable up to High settings but may dip during more demanding moments.

The GTX 1060's FPS performance at 4K in Halo Infinite Multiplayer is not great at all, being practically unplayable even on Low graphics settings. Therefore, the GTX 1060 is not recommended for playing Halo Infinite Multiplayer at 4K resolution.

Overall, the GTX 1060 is close to the minimum required GPU for Halo Infinite Multiplayer, and as such is reflected in performance. For the most competitive experience, Halo Infinite Multiplayer is best played on a GTX 1060 at 1080p on Low graphics settings, but is still playable up to Ultra settings on the same resolution, and up to High settings at 1440p. However, the GTX 1060 is not recommended to play Halo Infinite Multiplayer at 4K resolution.

The FPS performance of the R9 380 in Halo Infinite Multiplayer at 1080p is not great at all, achieving less than 30fps performance even on Low graphics settings. Even on Low settings, the VRAM was completely maxed out, and resulted in unplayable performance. Therefore the R9 380 is not suitable for playing Halo Infinite Multiplayer at 1080p at all.

If you do want to play Halo Infinite Multiplayer on an R9 380 however, you may achieve playable performance by reducing the resolution scale to lower than 1080p, which should help free up some of the VRAM and achieve playable performance.

Conclusion

Overall, looking at the benchmark results above, we can see that Halo Infinite Multiplayer is a relatively demanding game for modern hardware, and doesn't leave a lot of headroom for extra performance and also struggles to play on lower performing graphics cards.

For instance, the minimum required GPU for Halo Infinite Multiplayer is a GTX 1050 Ti, so the GTX 1060 should fit that bracket easily. At 1080p, the only setting which achieves more than 60fps performance is Low graphics settings. Although it is playable on higher settings, Halo Infinite Multiplayer plays best when you have a higher frame rate.

On the even lower end, the R9 380 struggled to get past 20fps on Low settings at 1080p. This is because available VRAM was already exceed on Low settings, and the only way to circumvent this would be to lower the resolution scale or even force your monitor's display resolution to one lower than 1080p.

Higher-end cards like the RTX 3070 however absolutely breeze their way through 1080p and 1440p and even 4K (though the latter will require lowering graphics settings to Medium to achieve more than 60fps performance). Therefore if you want to play Halo Infinite Multiplayer at its best, you will need a pretty beefy GPU like the RTX 3070 or higher.

It is also worth noting that performance may drop more depending on the situation. If there is a lot of explosions and destruction going on, a card that can just squeeze out 60fps on a certain setting may drop below that during these moments, which in a competitive environment may be less than ideal.

Additionally, although Halo Infinite Multiplayer includes a resolution scale, it also only has the option for borderless fullscreen if you want a fullscreen experience. In our testing, we found that on a 4K display, dropping the scale down to 50% (1080p) would still result in less performance than if you instead force your monitor's display resolution to 1080p instead. So if you are using a higher resolution monitor and struggle to get the right performance, consider lowering your monitor's resolution instead of using the resolution scale.

As always, we welcome any and all feedback from you guys as well with your experience of hardware configurations and FPS performance/quality settings. That way we can all better gauge how well our systems will be able to run Halo Infinite Multiplayer.

Weirdly enough, I get better performance on large scales battles with more player and bigger maps than on quick play. Poor optimization.

Weird thing: It does run at full screen at launch. But I have seen no option to run in fullscreen or windowed mode in the settings. Weird and Stupid.

Just want to say that I played the multiplayer a bunch today and it's really, really good and free. But damn I need to start saving up for a new PC.
